Second paragraph of third chapter:Then Xan said: 'I'm next door. We have our own bathroom, it's at the end of the corridor.'One of three sf novels I have found set in the year 2021. The other two are Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick, at least later editions, and the first half of Macro Life, by George Zebrowski. (NB that the film Children of Men, based on the book, is set in 2027.) This was published in 1992; the story is that in 1995, humanity simply stopped reproducing and no new children have been born since ...
Yes I know, no one thought it would ever get done but credit to Lancs County Council all the grumbling about it from me and probably many others too has finally been taken on board. Winifred Lane has had a shocking surface to it for a long time, indeed I have mentioned it on this blog site as far back as February 2018 – see link below:- As a daily cyclist I know all the bad roads across Sefton's East Parishes and in much of West Lancs too. Winifred Lane has long been a really really bad surface or ...
The absence from the scene of Joe Anderson, temporary or permanent, gives us the opportunity to once again reassess the position of Elected Mayor. The Lib Dems have moved to hold an Extraordinary Meeting of the Council when it can ... Continue reading →
There is lots of interest tucked into just this one graph from No Turning Back: The 2019 General Election and the UK's new electoral geography from the centre-right thinktank, Onward.
Not only has he just married a granddaughter of the golfer Jack Niklaus, he has also won our Name of the Day Award.
Back in 2005, only the second year of this blog's existence and before most of its readers were born, I blogged about continuous assessment in schools: When I was in the early years of secondary school, geography lessons seemed to be dominated by middle-class girls whose families encouraged them to write to foreign embassies for information about the countries we were discussing. Being male and coming from a one-parent family with a busy working mother, I was never going to compete with them. (And if you want real street cred, I got free school dinners.) Perhaps there was too much ...
Here in Wales, where the infection rate is running at over twice that of the worse region of England, the Welsh Government have taken the decision to close down schools to try and arrest the spread of Coronavirus. In England, where they have just put a huge section of the population into Tier three measures in an effort to control the virus in the run-up to Christmas, not only are they not closing schools but where headteachers and governors have taken the decision to close for public safety reasons Ministers are going to court to stop them. The education secretary, ...
Liberal Democrats should have the chance, at Spring Conference 2021, to vote to uphold the international rule of law and take a stand with the many countries who have signed and ratified the UN Treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons. We should adopt a policy of support for the Treaty. We have a choice to continue to align with the Conservatives and Labour, who will not support the Treaty, or to recognise that 21st century security depends on international cooperation and the rule of international law. We should recognise that resources and political energy should be spent on fighting ...
[IMG: CCTV cameras (Hustvedt [CC BY-SA 3.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0)])] I'm regularly (OK - occasionally) asked if the CCTV in the Lower Leas Cosatal Park and elsewhere in Folkestone actually works. Answer: yes. There are 6 cameras in the park (Lower Sandgate Road), they are part of the Folkestone Town Council CCTV system, and they are fully functional. 25 are live monitored, and the remainder are recording only. Access to footage is generally via Police request If you see / are affected by an offence, report it to the Police, and they can ask to see the recorded footage they think ...
Perhaps the best TV series the BBC has ever produced - and what it tells us about our society
Apologies for an England-centric article. I've recently been catching up on my TV viewing. I have finally watched most of the episodes of Michael Wood's "Story of England". This series follows the history of England from the Romans to the present day, through the prism of one village – Kibworth in Leicestershire. It really is an amateur historian's dream – because it focuses not on wars and kings, but instead uses basic digging by present-day villagers, and original documents (some of which haven't been touched for over 500 years). Thereby, it focuses on history from the roots of our society. ...
Mon, 15:10: Much Ado About Nothing, by William Shakespeare The play itself is genuinely funny, not quite as funny as A Comedy of Errors, but a better play - the characters are better rounded, and the drama frankly more believable. #nwbooks https://t.co/RiGsyewnmm https://t.co/Iz6Z0Se1fD https://t.co/4rAQg5QLuX Mon, 15:55: When I Was a Child I Read Books, by Marilynne Robinson A set of humane and sensible essays about America, Christian traditions, tolerance and learning. #nwbooks https://t.co/FnwRVtPkC2 https://t.co/IjuaYhpMdF https://t.co/TasiMaVQaL Mon, 16:05: Why the pandemic won't be a great global reset https://t.co/MqsUqNWzyZ "Covid-19 may initially have looked like a battle of ideas, but in fact ...

I have had numerous complaints about the extent of mushy, wet leaves around Magdalen Yard Road and Osborne Place and some blocked road drains. I had reported this to both the environment team in relation to the leaves and the Roads Maintenance Partnership in relation to the drains - and have also raised similar issues at other locations :
