If the Shropshire Star is a little racy for your taste, I recommend the Ludlow & Tenbury Wells Advertiser as an alternative. Here is a story from a couple of days ago: Improvements to broadband is (sic) promised next year for people living in some isolated Shropshire communities that struggle of get online. As a result of a new roll out of ultrafast broadband by local provider SWS, that's changing with Stiperstones village the first to benefit from a future proofed 'gigabit capable' broadband infrastructure. But then Stiperstones village has always been at the forefront of such efforts. At one ...

Two weeks ago, I wrote about the death of Simon, a man who lived in a garage on Quarry Gardens for many years. Simon had many friends. In Ludlow. Around the country and around the world. Arrangements for his funeral have now been made. It will take place at 11am on Monday 21 December at St Laurence's Church in Ludlow. The costs will be borne by Shropshire Council, with support from Victoria Allen Funeral Services and St Laurence's Parish Parochial Council. The cremation will be a non-attended event taking place the next day. The ashes will be returned to the ...

It's good news but we can't yet be confident. Covid rates have been falling rapidly in Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin. Could our status be changed to Tier 1 on Wednesday? I hope so but there are signals are that we may have to continue in Tier 2 until the next review. There is growing nervousness that rates are going up in some parts of the country and that increased travel, shopping and social engagement over the Christmas and New Year break could spread Covid-19. The headline Shropshire rate was 71 cases per 100,000 people over the seven days to ...

Finding it much more of a struggle to do ten-day updates this time around, compared to the spring. The fact that the weather is bad and the nights are still getting long doesn't help. Very much missing the usual circuit of holiday receptions that I'd be attending in normal times. As mentioned last time, I did have the thrill yesterday of another in-person diplomatic meeting, and was struck by how busy Brussels actually is - everyone wearing masks though. I've been working more on my DNA connections, finding that my American relatives have been much more systematic than those of ...

Amadeus

Amadeus won the Oscar for Best Picture of 1984, and also seven others, Best Director (Milos Forman), Best Actor (F. Murray Abraham as Salieri beating Tom Hulce as Mozart), Best Adapted Screenplay (Peter Shaffer), Best Costume Design, Best Art Direction, Best Makeup and Best Sound, losing in Best Cinematography and Best Editing to The Killing Fields. That year's Hugo winner, 2010, got five Oscar nominations but lost all of them (two to Amadeus). The other Best Picture nominees were A Passage to India, which I have seen, and The Killing Fields, Places in the Heart and A Soldier's Story, which ...

The dates for the Scottish and Federal Spring conferences have been set as we reported last week. Scottish Conference will meet virtually from 5-6 March and Federal Conference will meet virtually two weeks later 19-21 March. The great thing about our Conferences is that even in their virtual form, members have been able to submit policy motions and amendments for debate. In our party, we give our members actual power to make policy and set the direction of the party. This is your reminder that if you want any of the nice people from the respective Committees to help you ...

The new train timetable from Sunday 13th Dec is a real missed opportunity. You can find details at: https://www.gwr.com/plan-journey/train-times. Annoyingly, they are running slow trains from Glos to Bristol every half hour, but only alternate trains stop at Yate!! The Malvern line B3 from Malvern to Bristol stops at Yate. The Weymouth B10 line from Gloucestershire to Weymouth won't. It will stop at places like Thornford and Upway, but not Yate. We have been campaigning for half hourly trains for a long time, and the local MP SAYS he backs the campaign. And WECA and South Glos say THEY back it, ...

It is a miserable December morning and we need something to cheer us up. Step forward Brora, Christine Jardine's incredibly cute 10 month old puppy. She's featured in a Politicians and their Pets article in this week's Holyrood magazine. Here she is on a Highland beach: In lieu of a hot take on the US Election nobody wants or needs, here is a cute video of Brora on a beach. You're welcome xo pic.twitter.com/naoDnNXutx — Mhairi Macdonald (@mhairijanemac) November 4, 2020 It's very clear that from the article that Brora is a Very Good Dog indeed: What can she do? ...

If we were worried before about the UK entering splendid isolation after Brexit then things may have deteriorated markedly from such a scenario as Boris Johnson puts the British navy on a war footing to repel the hordes of European fishermen determined to infiltrate our waters and steal our fish. Why he has not thought of branding each fish with the union jack, as with the Pfizer Covid vaccine I do not know. The Guardian reports that the government have ordered four Royal Navy patrol ships to be ready from 1 January to help the UK protect its fishing waters ...
