Here's an unexpected find. In the summer of 1970, following the cancellation of a tour by South Africa, five matches were staged between England and a Rest of the World XI. At the time these games were given test status, which the depth and quality of the Rest of the World's batting, if not its bowling, justified. But that status was stripped from them a year or two later. England competed well but lost the series 4-1. This video comes from the final test at the Oval, which the Rest of the World won by successfully chasing 284 in the ...

'We were just knocking about in the park. Then the Beatles turned up' https://t.co/U1GnGcZ3mi — The Guardian (@guardian) August 18, 2017 Intrigued by the story of the Beatles' photoshoot at Old St Pancras, I did some googling and found a piece in the Guardian by one of the children pictured with them. Ian Whittington writes: I'm the little boy on the left in the light blue jumper, and I'm six years old. Standing next to me is my younger brother Neil and behind us is our nan, Eunice. She's holding paper and a pencil, as we got three of the ...
Compass today published a report calling on progressive parties to work together. We Divide They Conquer concludes: For the next two years we need to build relationships of trust around values and ideas, and against one of the most incompetent governments in living memory. We need to test all the things that unite us and understand where we don't agree and why. We need to be combinational, open-minded and exploratory. We have the time - but not a moment to lose. Cooperation under FPTP - an adversarial, winner-takes-all system - will not be easy. Political parties are tribal, and we ...

It must be a good ten years ago that one of my hiking companions, a staunch Conservative, said he was getting fed up hearing about people claiming their human rights. To say I was astonished is putting it mildly. I had thought that everybody accepted respect for human rights: that this was a given in a civilised democracy, just as all Americans are supposed do believe in motherhood and apple pie. I now realise that my companion was probably absorbing drip-feed from his favoured newspaper source, the Daily Mail. His and our problem is that for most of we comfortable ...
We spent the Easter weekend with my sister in Cluny. Little S, now 7 months, was sitting up and having fun. Some of us tried roller-blading. (I didn't.) I also had a day-trip to Geneva, and explored a new park near B. I had a day-trip to Geneva, and a birthday which I don't seem to have recorded much about. The most mind-boggling news was Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness announcing that a TV version of Game of Thrones would be made in Northern Ireland - difficult to believe back then, and still seems extraordinary now. I read 24 books. ...
Everyone hates to look foolish. To avoid this hugely embarrassing peril they will often go to great lengths ranging from self-deception to conspiracy theories to lies. And the greater the personal investment in an untenable position the more difficult it is for the investor to change direction and face the chorus of "I told you so's." Two of the most prominent examples of this foolishness are Brexit and Donald Trump. Millions of intelligent Americans have invested their political heart and soul in the Cult of Trump. They cannot comprehend the possibility of his losing the November presidential election. Therefore, their ...
As mentioned in a previous posting, I've been given some old photo albums which belonged to a Neil Reston by his family. I'm still working my way through them but here's a shot of the Liverpool – Ormskirk – Preston Line at Maghull from the 1960. The shot will have been taken from the Poverty Lane bridge looking northwards with the houses in Orchard Hey and Foxhouse Lane being clearly visible. The diesel locomotive is what later became a Class 25 and it seems to be on a work train travelling towards Maghull Station from the Ormskirk direction. I've tried ...
Many of you will be aware of Compass, the progressive organisation headed by Neal Lawson. Although its origins lie in Labour, for many years it has been positioning itself as centre-left and cross-party. Introducing themselves, the Compass Liberal Democrat Network writes: Liberal Democrats are natural pluralists, our core liberal values demand nothing less. We are open, empathetic, curious and inquiring. But we are also social. We believe everyone should be able to fulfil their potential and it is the job of the broader society, and through it the democratic and devolved state, to ensure this happens. These two values combine ...

It's approaching that time again, another four years have past and another government will be voted in. Next year Scotland will be holding the Scottish Parliament election in May. As an activist and a proud political geek, I should be excited and ready to campaign till I'm blue in the face. But unfortunately that isn't the case. On December 2nd Ipsos Mori published the latest polls, predicting the estimated results of the election. From a first glance, it's hard to feel worried about the potential landslide form the Scottish National Party. At current the polls show the SNP set to ...

Having blundered into a one-on-one dinner with the European President unprepared, dressed like an old Etonian scarecrow and with nothing but his threadbare and unconvincing wit to fall back on, Boris Johnson has returned to London to face a challenge of a different sort. According to the Guardian a legal challenge has been launched against the Prime Minister's decision to clear Priti Patel of bullying despite advice that she had breached the ministerial code. The paper says that lawyers for the FDA union have sent a pre-action notice to Downing Street accusing the prime minister of acting unlawfully when he ...
From October 6th anyone born after 5th October 1954 will have a state pension age of 66 – for some women this is six years later than they were originally promised. The 1995 Pensions Act intended raising the age of eligibility to the State Pension for women to 65 over a ten-year period between 2010 and 2020. The 2011 Pension Act accelerated this and raised the age to 66 for both men (previously 65) and women. Women born in the 1950s might have spent half their working lives paying National Insurance in the knowledge they would get their State Pension ...

In a long year that has been dominated by coronavirus and lockdowns, February 2020 seems remote to many people. But it is not a distant for the occupants of the 50 or so homes that were inundated in yet another flood event for our town on 16 February. Discussions with the Environment Agency and Shropshire Council earlier in the year brought no promise of action. Even on cheap and straightforward schemes such as raising the height of the wall on Temeside. It has long been the case that councils and the Environment Agency have their eyes focused on a few ...
A number of residents recently contacted me about blocked road drains in parts of Ancrum Road and Lochee Road. As one resident advised : "I was driving up Lochee Road and Ancrum Road earlier this afternoon and the road gullies were all choked and the roads and footpaths were all severely flooded." I raised this with the City Council's Roads Maintenance Partnership and have received the following helpful reply : "The roads inspector has raised an order for five gullies to be cleared as soon as resources are available."
Welsh Liberal Democrats is the first federal party to impose high qualification standards for inclusion on their list of approved candidates for the 2021 Welsh general election.
