I am addicted to John Rogers' videos and I think this is my favourite so far. It's not just the interest of following the course of a lost river, it's also the obscure quarters of London it takes us to. One of those quarters, Old St Pancras churchyard, is well known to me, but the picture John paints of barges moored beside the churchyard is an added attraction. John has a Patreon account to support his videos and blogs at The Lost Byway.

I thought I had done with Freda Jackson, Henry Bird and No Room at the Inn, but there's more. Freda Jackson and Henry Bird had a son called Julian. You can find a photo of him celebrating his fourth birthday with his mother and the young cast of the play of No Room at the Inn on the Imago site. Julian Bird grew up to become a psychiatrist, until his genes reasserted themselves when he was in his 60s and he trained as an actor. Since then he has confused IMDB, as both Julian Bird (VI) and Julian Bird (VII) ...

When he stood for the Liberal Democrat leadership Ed Davey chose to concentrate on two issues: the climate emergency and carers. The former is about the most importance issues we face, while the latter has certainly received too little attention, so they were understandable choices. Yet it's hard to resist the conclusion that they were principally chosen because they enabled Ed to talk about the qualities he believed would appeal to party members in the election: his experience as a cabinet minister and his own life story. Now that Ed is Lib Dem leader, we have to ask if these ...

It would be absolutely wrong of me to comment on the events which on Friday led to the arrest of Mayor Anderson. I have been advising people not to speculate and I have no intention of ignoring my own advice. ... Continue reading →

I was born in the same year as Donald Trump and Dolly Parton. No problems deciding which is one of my favourite Americans! Actually I was born on exactly the same day as the late Freddie Mercury (infinitely more Dolly than Donald). Do the sums and you will realise that I was surprised to find myself an endangered species – sorry, vulnerable category, when the virus came knocking on too many doors. My colleagues were quite firm as to what I should and should not do. I consider myself pretty fit for my years, which is mainly due to delivering ...

Usually around this time of year I post the list of places where I have spent a night away from home, and since I think it's unlikely I'll be going anywhere this month, here we are. (I am thinking of going to the Netherlands for a haircut, but that will be a half day at most.) As usual, places where I spent more than one non-consecutive night are marked with an asterisk. *London, England Glasgow, Scotland *Rome, Italy Los Angeles, USA Cambridge, England (All of the above before the end of February! Then just two trips in July and September.) ...

Welcome back to Creeting St Peter, a small Parish in Suffolk's Gipping Valley... One of the more visible aspects of small parishes is the role of statutory consultee for any planning applications in, or affecting, the Parish. More often than not, councillors are asked to consider extensions, occasionally an outbuilding for a farm. They generally aren't very controversial, and as planning controls have been relaxed in recent years, there are fewer of them it seems. And, as a councillor, you probably don't need much in the way of technical skills to take a view on whether or not the Council ...

< Boris Johnon's cabinet may becoming more and more comfortable with the no deal scenario that is looming over us as talks with the Eu falter but not all Ministers are delusional about the consequences of such an outcome. As the Times reports, one cabinet minister admitted yesterday that a no deal will see food prices rise, with beef and pork hit the hardest: George Eustice, the environment, food and rural affairs secretary, insisted the increases would be "modest" but conceded that travel to EU nations would become more complicated and Britons with less than six months' passport validity faced ...

Good morning, gentle readers, and welcome to another week here at Liberal Democrat Voice. I have to admit that it's going to be a quiet start, as I'll be attending a funeral later, so do bear with me if moderation isn't as snappy as it usually is. Following on from my plea a fortnight ago, we've had a few requests and/or comments, and so I ought to respond. To Katharine Pindar, who raised the issue of press releases, we're not receiving very many at all at the moment – we are receiving e-mails from the HQ Press Team, but not ...
