Six of the Best 950

"Some voters live in a so-called populist bubble, where they hear nationalist and xenophobic messages, learn to distrust fact-based media and evidence-based science, and become receptive to conspiracy theories and suspicious of democratic institutions. Others read and hear completely different media, respect different authorities, and search for a different sort of news." Anne Applebaum on how to beat populists when facts no longer matter - unconventional messengers, appeals to patriotism and even jokes can reach voters who don't want to listen. The current government communications campaign to prepare Britain for Brexit won't work. Maddy Thimont Jack explains why. Jake Richards ...

I have written a series of articles, mostly in for the Spectator but sometimes elsewhere, about the state of the Lib Dems. I've written about what I think the party should do, what I think they will do, and what I think other parties need to be mindful of when it comes to the Liberal Democrats. There seems to be some confusion about what I believe to be the case, with some accusations thrown at me for being supposedly inconsistent. This, I believe, mostly comes down to people being confused between what I think WILL happen and what I think ...

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest won the Oscar for Best Picture of 1975, and picked up the other four of the magic five - Best Director (Miloš Forman), Best Actor (Jack Nicholson as McMurphy), Best Actress (Louise Fletcher as Nurse Ratched), and Best Screenplay Adapted from Other Material, the first film to do this since It Happened One Night in 1934. It lost four - Best Supporting Actor (Brad Dourif as Billy Bibbit), Best Original Score, Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing. The other Oscar-nominated films of 1976 were Barry Lyndon, Dog Day Afternoon, Jaws and Nashville; the only ...

Exam results

Claire Young, from the Lib Dems has spoken of her response to what we are seeing as tearful young people and their parents locally are seeking help. "It's heart breaking to see young people not getting the results they deserve, through no fault of their own. Students need to be judged on their own record, not past results from their school. It cannot be fair that those at state schools and further education colleges have been harder hit by the downgrading than those at independent schools.""At an anxious time disappointed students need urgent answers about what happens next. While I'm ...

Solidarity with Belarus

The Kremlin declared today that President Vladimir Putin and his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko had agreed in a phone call that the "problems" in Belarus would be swiftly resolved. I am not alone in finding this deeply ominous. What has been happening on the streets of Minsk and other towns and cities in the landlocked [...]

Transportation Accidents

The oh so sad news of the train derailment near Stonehaven in Scotland a couple of days ago where 3 people died reminded me of something I heard many years ago about the huge disparity between road and rail deaths. The words by American commentator – Rogers E M Whitaker – were unsurprisingly about the situation in the USA but what he said back @1980 still stands – 'Don't get on the safe old train get on the safe old highway and get yourself killed'. The point he was making was that because railway accidents, where someone is killed, are ...

The one phrase we haven't heard that much of in the last few weeks is 'we are following the science'. The reason for that is possibly because the UK government is no longer taking the advice of scientists so seriously, as they try to get the economy in England back underway. In truth, it has never been entirely about the science. Every decision has been political and the advice of scientists has just been one factor in the conclusions that were reached. What has changed is the weighting given to that scientific advice as other agendas kick in. This has ...

It's been a hell of a couple of weeks for exam students. Highers and A level results play a huge role in determining the course of your life. If you don't get the grades you need to fulfil your aspirations, you have to rethink your whole life. And you will carry those grades around for your whole life. The question of whether we should have a system that puts so much stress on our young people is up for debate, but that's for another day. We know, though, that there are clear differences between the nations of the UK. In ...

Appeals cost u-turn alone will be cold comfort, Liberal Democrats warn Responding to reports that the Government will cover costs of all appeals after thousands of students have not secured places at their first choice universities due to downgraded results, Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson Layla Moran said: For the young people who have worked so hard to not get the results they deserve, through no fault of their own, this annoucement alone will be cold comfort. While this should never have been needed, it is right the Government has listened to the Liberal Democrats and others and u-turned. Ministers must ...
