Lord Bonkers writes exclusively for Liberal England: To the Bonkers' Home for Well-Behaved Orphans where the little inmates hang upon my tales of how life used to be. I tell them of a time long ago when one could talk to one's family and neighbours, travel by train or bus or go out to the cinema or a restaurant, all without wearing a mask. It was a time when people would attend a test match or football game with their friends and when the news was not dominated by a single subject. Life was so good there were even local ...

Each week, LDV invites the leadership candidates to write a post for us. This is Layla's post for this week. The climate and nature emergencies are the greatest threats our country - and humankind - face. Climate change is not under control. Worldwide, deforestation and the destruction of habitats continue at a terrifying rate, with catastrophic impacts on wildlife. This is why, alongside the economy and education, I've made the environment one of my campaign themes. My ambition as leader is to make our Liberal voice heard clearly on the environment and to recapture our position as the most innovative ...

[IMG: Folkestone Garden of Remembrance, Sandgate Road] Following a recent meeting with the Mayor, Veterans Associations and Cadet groups I wanted to update you with regard to what has been agreed for the remainder of Remembrance events in Folkestone during 2020. The decisions made have not been undertaken lightly and as a Town Council we have had to consider the following: Insurers position / liability / duty of care to public, parade (Veterans, Military, Cadets, emergency services) volunteers, Cllrs & employees. Uncertainty and possibility of spikes, possibility of them being attributed to large gatherings Issues with events that have always ...

That the knotty issue of non-compliance with with face covering on public transport was brought to my attention the other day and with particular reference to Merseyrail. A 507/508 EMU Merseyrail unit at Crescent Road level crossing – Birkdale, Southport. I must admit that I had wrongly assumed that Merseyrail's security staff would be empowered to tackle non-compliance because they're not. I asked Merseyrail about this and they replied 'we are unable to enforce the face covering rule, but continue to educate all of our passengers on the matter. We also work with British Transport Police, who are able to ...

Cllr Rabina Khan is written in The Independent under the headline: 'The treatment of migrants crossing the Channel is plain wrong and against British values.' Rabina is a councillor in Tower Hamlets and Special Advisor to Lib Dem peers. She writes: Home secretary Priti Patel tells us the UK government is committed to "shutting down" routes used by migrants crossing the Channel to the south coast and disassembling the criminal gangs "making fortunes" enabling the illegal crossings to take place. And whose fault is it anyway? Well, the French of course - as far as the government is concerned. If ...

1987 used to be a pivotal election, frequently referenced. Yet despite its relevance for 2015, it's been forgotten.

Boris Johnson is very unpopular in Scotland. A Times poll out this morning puts Johnson's handling of the CoVid crisis amongst Scots at -61%. There was talk when he became PM that he would end the union – sure enough, the SNP are riding higher than ever in the polls and Scotland voting to leave the Union and becoming an independent country now regularly wins out when the subject is polled. Yes, Brexit is obviously a factor. But Brexit has been there, waiting, for four years and it is only since Johnson became prime minister that we've seen this shift ...

Whoniversaries 13 August

When I first did these posts in 2010-11, I skipped this date because I could not find anything relevant. He was also script editor of the show in 1967. He wrote Fury from the Deep (Second Doctor, 1968) and Doctor Who and the Pescatons (Fourth Doctor audio, 1976), and appeared as the minor character Jules Faure, a crewman who gets converted into a ...
