This production of A Midsummer Night was screened as an ITV Play of the Week in 1965. Among the cast you will find the mighty Peter Wyngarde as Oberon, Anna Massey, Patrick Allen, Miles Malleson, Jill Bennett, Alfie Bass, Bernard Bresslaw and, above all, Benny Hill as Bottom. And very good he is too. Thanks to Archivetvmusings for tweeting this video.

Sometimes I find it hard to believe, but one day soon the UK is going to have to figure out how we should leave our current state of lockdown, and with the government reluctant to have a public conversation about how this should be done it's time put some thought into this ourselves. The key planks of any strategy to exit lockdown safely are largely technical: we need to be able to implement efficient personal protection, testing, contact tracing and treatment procedures, all points on which this government has, so far, failed to cover itself in glory. However, there will ...

January 2006 books

As previously noted, 2006 started with a full house of visitors and much fun, though B's behaviour was becoing more and more difficult. I got very excited about the Lib Dem leadership, with Charles Kennedy's dramatic fall and the nearly successful wonkish challenge by Chris Huhne to veterans Menȝies Campbell and Simon Hughes. (There was a time when it mattered who the Lib Dem leader was.) At work we published a report on (North) Macedonia, but I was running out of steam... I had a one-day trip to Paris, and actually finished the month in Macedonia, having travelled there from ...

My very first isolation diary on 16th March was titled Paying the Newsagent. That was followed by Going for a walk and Doing the shopping. A pattern was emerging, and I love patterns, so I have started each title with a present participle ever since. My fascination with patterns fuelled my interest in the English language, Maths, Philosophy and eventually Computer Science. When I took O level English Language I always attempted the optional questions in analysis (ie grammar) because I knew I could get them right, whereas other questions had more subjective elements to them. At various times in ...

What kind of world awaits us after the coronavirus pandemic and how should Liberal Democrats respond to it? One, not unlikely, scenario is that those on both the right and left may feel that the pandemic justifies a larger, and more intrusive, state. Whereas the former may express such statism in calls for a 'bio-surveillance' state, with the inevitable restrictions on civil liberties that this entails, the latter's statism is more likely to be expressed in terms of a greater role for the state in economic life. Liberals, however, should emphasise the need to develop and expand the third sector ...

Someone please explain to Donald Trump that we are in the middle of a global pandemic which requires global cooperation and coordination. In fact, as of this writing approximately 2,100,000 people in 180 countries have come down with coronavirus. The light at the end of the tunnel which Trump talks about is most likely the oncoming train. So far the the developed world has been hit hardest.. But Italy, Spain, France, Germany, the UK and America started off with a mere handful of cases of this highly contagious disease. And that is the position the developing world – especially Africa ...

Over the Easter bank holiday weekend, Bedford Borough Council's Community Hub delivered its 1,000th food parcel as part of its support to vulnerable residents during the COVID-19 restrictions. The hub was set up in double quick time and other major changes have also been implemented rapidly - in our case almost 1,000 members of staff working from home. Very early on we identified that the biggest risks were in social care, particularly adult social care. Several weeks ago we went out to recruit more staff for both Council and non-Council providers, which has been very successful, but PPE for carers ...

The latest update on grants to local small businesses, which are being administered through the South Glos Council Business Rates Team. If you have not applied yet, do get in touch with them. "Business grants - Our Business Rates team has been working hard, ensuring all the due diligence checks are covered to issue business support grants. The team will be working over the Bank Holiday weekend and we are issuing the small business support grants first as these can be assessed quickly. The government guidance is frequently updated, and we are refreshing our processes accordingly and have already prevented ...

With a new book out a few weeks ago, Bad News: what the headlines don't tell us, I'd normally be offering to come and talk at events around the country about it. With coronavirus, that's not practical... but if you'd like to do a Zoom call with me talking about the book and taking questions, then do drop me a line.

Those of us who are still adjusting to the stresses and strains of the lockdown may be gratified to know that there are many positives, so much so that the vast majority of Britons want to the brave new world the other side of this pandemic to be very different from what went before. The Independent reports that a new poll has found that only nine per cent of Britons want to return to life as normal after the end of the lockdown triggered by coronavirus pandemic. The paper says that many have seen benefits from the way they are ...

2 big stories Another three weeks... For some, probably myself included, it may not seem so bad, but for anyone who had persuaded themselves that this wasn't going to last, the next few days of adjustment will be tougher. At least there is the hint of a plan, although John Crace in the Guardian wasn't wildly impressed... Mind you, Raab did hedge his bets a bit by saying that the restrictions would initially remain in place for another three weeks. It sounded as if he was hoping the prime minister might be back in action by then, so that it ...

We need bus services serving towns and villages to ensure that people can get to work, the shops and medical services. services between towns in the south of the county have been affected, like everything else, by the Covid-19 lockdown. The Diamond Ludlow to Kidderminster 292 service runs a Saturday service all week, as does the Lugg Valley service to Leominster. From Monday, the 435 Minsterley service between Ludlow and Shrewsbury and the 535 between Bishop's Castle and Shrewsbury will be reinstated. Both will run on Saturday timetables. The maximum capacity will be 50% of seating to allow social distancing. ...
