Effie Gray (2014) ****

The art critic John Ruskin was a complex character, intense, driven yet capable of inspiring great admiration and loyalty from young devotees, including Oscar Wilde while that brilliant Irishman was a student at Oxford. But in Richard Laxton's film Effie Gray — available on BBC iPlayer for the next four weeks, with a screenplay by Emma Thompson [...]

Second paragraph of third chapter:For all those years before she married Dan Needham, my mother never had a real job, or pursued a higher education; and although she never lacked money—because my grandmother was generous to her—she was clever at keeping her personal expenses to a minimum. She would bring home some of the loveliest clothes, from Boston, but she would never buy them; she dressed up her dressmaker's dummy in them, and she copied them. Then she'd return the originals to the various Boston stores; she said she always told them the same thing, and they never got angry ...

One Stop, 9 Tower Street, which leases space to the Post Office, will not be redeveloped in the foreseeable future. The wannabe "developer", an investment company, has not made any effort over the last three years to start the development. This has led to its planning permission expiring under national rules. Any new plans will have to start from scratch. I always suspected that this development wouldn't happen. The property developer, Surrey based Machan Investments Ltd, is unknown in Ludlow. But its speculative application was submitted and after the usual debate it was approved. That permission has now failed and ...

I got hold of this Big Finish box set to acompany my cycling through the forest in recent days, and realised only when I started writing this up that although I had already listened to Volume One of this series a couple of years ago, I had actually missed Volume Two. Oh well, more pleasures in store I guess. All three stories here bring David Tennant back together with Catherine Tate as Donna Noble. The first one, No Place by James Goss, also brings back Jacqueline King as Donna's mother Sylvia and Bernard Cribbins as her grandfather Wilf. They are ...

It's now a desert spring, perhaps;or continental (since we are no island in this main): of clear skies, warm days, cold nights... where magnolias reach up towards magnificence and cherry trees and hawthorns, and apples mixed with pears cascade promiscuously in pink and white undress on empty close-cropped ground / unpurposed / reminders of a world once-shared; hedged in by beech that thickens with [...]

The last time the country mobilised thousands of volunteers was for London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics. The weather wasn't so good yesterday so I went back to cupboard in the spare room that I am gradually clearing and I came across a bag full of Gamesmaker kit. It brought back some wonderful memories. I was in Event Services for the Paralympics, based in the Excel Centre – so I am fully aware of how unbelievably vast that building is and why they could set up 4000 hospital beds inside. My task was essentially Front of House, which meant I was ...

Rochdale town centre in 2016 after the River Roch was opened up following many years of it being underground. Rochdale is famous for Gracie Fields, Lisa Stansfield and of course the Rochdale Pioneers who founded the first viable Co-Op. But there are others too who you may not know originated from or lived in the town such as:- Colin Baker – actor known for playing Doctor Who on television John Bright – radical; Liberal statesman Don Estelle – Crumpsall-born actor and singer who lived for much of his life in Rochdale Anna Friel – stage and screen actress Sajid Javid ...

This week, Yate Town Council held its first ever on line meeting. Regulations permitting meetings to be held on line came into force on 3rd April and Yate held a finance committee on line on Tues 7th. An exciting experiment. The Town Council is trying to minimise meetings, with officers consulting councillors by email. The Town Council is lucky that its standing orders already include good delegated powers, and we have an officer team who work with members so that the town council is getting things done, including making major changes to ensure the town council prioritises COVID and the ...

Embed from Getty ImagesIn January Sir Keir Starmer, then a candidate for Labour's leadership, wrote an article in the Guardian about his motivations and values. There was much in what he revealed there likely to appeal to Liberal Democrats of a centre-left persuasion. He wrote that there were "Two parts to being Labour. First, enabling everyone to get a decent education, the best job they can, better standards of living and a fulfilling life. The free market has failed in this endeavour. We have to fight to put wealth, power and opportunity in the hands of all." Secondly, he continued, ...

On the same day that the Doctors Association UK has warned that supplies of protective gowns used to safely treat coronavirus patients have become so depleted that they are no longer available to many doctors in high-risk roles, the Guardian reports that Britain missed three opportunities to be part of an EU scheme to bulk-buy masks, gowns and gloves and has been absent from key talks about future purchases. The paper says that European doctors and nurses are preparing to receive the first of €1.5bn (£1.3bn) worth of personal protective equipment (PPE) within days or a maximum of two weeks ...

Corbynistas now cling with desperation to the idea that the Labour Party almost won the 2017 general election. It is all they have left, I suppose, the betrayal myth; we came so close and if it hadn't been for internal saboteurs, we'd have got over the line. Look how close we got anyhow! Except in any sort of objective examination, the Labour party came nowhere close to winning the 2017 general election. No. Where. Close. The myth is built upon the notion that Labour came within 2,000 to 2,500 votes of victory. The source of the idea stems from an ...

Coronavirus has lifted the lid on the prevalence of financial insecurity in this UK. For many, there is no safety net in place for times of crisis. So, now more than ever, we need progressive, forward-thinking solutions to help people cope. That's why I, along with a group of cross-party MPs, have been calling on the Chancellor to implement an Emergency Universal Basic Income. Before the crisis, I advocated for the launch of local pilots to explore the idea. Now, I realise that we to act nationally to protect our most economically vulnerable. Low-paid workers, such as those in the ...

Back, and refreshed after the Easter weekend... 2 big stories The Guardian is claiming as an exclusive its story that the United Kingdom missed three chances to join the EU scheme to bulk-buy PPE. Given that there are evident shortages and that, as a result, health and care workers are going unprotected, this is another reminder that the Government have been slow to act, and equally slow to co-operate where there might be advantage in doing so. Bernie Sanders has endorsed Joe Biden. Now that may seem obvious, but given that Hillary Clinton lost as much because Sanders supporters stayed ...
