I am pleased at the Government's decision to keep the mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for those in care homes. Working closely with MENCAP the Lib Dems have fought to ensure the payment would not be scrapped. Lib Dem MP Don Foster was the first MP to raise the issue at Prime Minister's Questions in January 2011 and has had a series of further meetings with Ministers on the issue. Earlier this month, Lib Dem's backed Lord Low's independent review that stated DLA mobility is essential to meeting the personal mobility needs of care home residents. The ...

The Government has presented Bristol with a decision of profound significance. A choice that has the potential to transform the city's future. Next May we will be asked to vote on whether we want an elected mayor. Similar votes will occur in a number of other great British cities. The debate over the merits of a city mayor has yet to achieve a high public profile locally. But it will - or, at least, should - gather momentum over the coming months. I spent today at the Watershed at the Should Bristol have an elected mayor? event organised by the ...

Jack Smith, treasurer of the former Dundee West Liberal Association, and long-time resident of Windsor Terrace on Perth Road, has passed away in his 90th year. But above all, Jack was a gentleman, with a sharp mind and always good company. I pass on my condolences to his wife Kathleen (Dundee ...

When celebrating the news that Northampton's hyperbrutalist Greyfriars bus station is to be demolished, I mentioned that the new on will be built on the site of town's Fishmarket, which is currently occupied by the Northampton Arts Collective. A review of Don't Take No For An Answer by Lewis Baston and Ken Ritchie (Biteback Publishing, 2011) I've made several attempts at writing a review of Don't Take No For An Answer, Lewis Baston and Ken Ritchie's review of the 2011 referendum and the ongoing campaign for electoral reform. It is a highly readable and engaging book. For someone with less inside knowledge it will no doubt be highly informative. But it is flawed, and I've struggled with articulating how without just running down a pedantic list of misconceptions. As one of the main sources cited in the book, ...

So there I am. Laying on my backside throwing a mini American Football up in the air watching the news. The local news starts with a report on a group of protesters who have occupied the Art Gallery at Brighton University. They haven't decided how long they will occupy the building but have given a list of 14 demands to the university which would end this occupation. Some of these demands are what you'd expect, things like they want a guarantee that no courses will close at the university. Fair enough. That is the type of demand/protest that most people ...

Part of my role as Creeting St Peter's 'envoy to the world' is to represent us at area meetings of the Suffolk Association of Local Councils. by Tim Farron, President of the Liberal Democrats Scotland punches massively above its weight in the UK. It has often been punished for having the audacity to be progressive by UK governments that are not - especially in the 80s and 90s - but it has also suffered at the hands of governments that have taken it for granted. Labour's record from 1997-2010 is a shameful one - their lazy assumption that Scotland would just vote Labour led to Scotland's interests being ignored. Scotland has progressive and radical heart, its strong sense of community makes it inclined towards social democracy, ...

If we really want to reform party funding, we need politicians or trade unions to be brave. Transparency has failed. That is the lesson from the last decade of political party funding reform. Encapsulated by the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act of 2000, the emphasis - with general cross-party support - has been on making it clear where funding for parties comes from. There has been some tinkering with who is allowed to give money and with how much parties can spend. However, the curbs on foreign donations has not ended the succession of questionable and controversial politician donors, ...

London house prices are predicted to rise by 20% over the next five years. 20%! This is driven partly by lack of house building, which in turn is constricted by an inability to borrow, and also more demand with a planned rapid increase in London's population y one million people. A triple whammy for any Londoners wanting to stay in London over the long term. We need a London full of Londoners making long term commitment to work towards making London a better place for them and their families and friends. The Lib Dems have put their distinctive stamp on several progressive announcements in the autumn statement, not least the commitment to uprate benefits in line with inflation, on which Osborne vacillated. But the extra spending on work placements for young people, the targeted extra money for toddler care and the spending on infrastructure projects all bear the mark of Lib Dem pressure inside the coalition.

Having high streets which look pleasant rather than grotty should be an aim for local politicians others active in their community. There is the economic reason – businesses tend to do better. There is the safety reason – as the broken windows theory argues and evidence backs up – dealing with grime and grot helps cut crime. There is also a third reason which politicians in particular are often a bit wary of saying, but quite simply having our communities look more pleasant is a desirable end in itself.
