From 23 November Chorlton residents will be able to dial 101-the national single non emergency telephone number, when they need to contact the police on matters that do not require an emergency response. People can report crime, anti-social behaviour or speak to the police for advice or information using the new 101 service, although GMP's existing non-emergency number, 872 5050 will be retained for the foreseeable future. Calls to 101 will cost the local call rate, though mobile rates may vary. Callers will be connected automatically to their own police force. A message will tell them which force they are ...

Look at Life: In Gear

Another of these Look at Life films from the Rank Organisation, this one looking at Swinging London. The sourness of the commentary is notable, even if there is something in the thesis that not all London was swinging and that the beautiful people were on holiday from real life. And I love old street scenes whatever the commentary. If you do too, see this video from The Purple Gang.

Today would've been my Father's 75th birthday. He passed away in June 2003 aged just 66 and I have mentioned him many times before in this blog. His lasting legacies to me are plentiful, many of which I have touched upon previously. But to celebrate his birthday today, I wanted to remember him through the music that he enjoyed and which I in turn in turn, grew to enjoy and love also. He listened to a wide ranging mix of music did Dad and I suppose that in itself answers why my taste in music is so eclectic. Here below ...

Conventional wisdom has it about right regarding the oeuvre of The Bangles. Their first album, 1984's All Over The Place, was a fine example of the emerging sixties-influenced guitar-based, jangle-pop 'Paisley underground' thing that was happening at that time. Instead of continuing in similar vein, the band sought a short-cut to stardom, through songs such as Manic Monday and Walks like an Egyptian, enjoyable pop confections in themselves, but less than the band was capable of creatively. And then of coure they recorded the excruciating power ballad Eternal Flame. So I wouldn't have bothered with their latest effort Sweetheart of ...

I for one am very proud to consider myself on the centre-left of British politics. I believe that three years ago I joined the party of the centre-left. And I also believe that as a party of government, this party promotes a centre-left agenda and enacts many of its centre-left policies. Surely, goes the conventional wisdom this party must be the Labour Party. However it is not the Labour Party; I became interested in politics due to my opposition to what was then an authoritarian Labour government. No this governing party of the centre-left is the Liberal Democrats. How can ...

Today is my father's 75th birthday. He wasn't much of a football fan but he did take me to Villa Park on my first trip to that footballing mecca of my life back in the autumn of 1995 when I was 13. So he wouldn't have had much interest in the fact that his birthday coincided with a remarkable date in footballing history and to my amazement, I only realised it myself in recent days. For on my father's 50th birthday on November 6th 1986, Alex Ferguson became manager of Manchester United. Little could the footballing world have realised what ...

In the early morning of 31 July 1943, our village's peaceful slumbers were interrupted by an explosion on the railway line to the south. The Resistance had successfully attacked a German troop transport, causing fairly substantial damage to the train itself and to the railway line. These pictures were taken by a German soldier and developed by a local chemist who had the foresight to run off some extra prints: (Pictures copied from this article.) It's important to find things to be cheerful about in these serious days. The results of those in agreement were roughly as follows: Indians 65%, Pakistani 71%, Black Caribbean 74% and Black African 75% — but in the case of the white majority, only 19% agreed. This was a huge eye-opener for me. I had previously assumed that most educated and fair-minded members of the public would support an equalities agenda to address the democratic deficit. However, that was clearly not the majority point of view. The survey also found that ...

The Financial Times this weekend reported what it labelled 'one of the fiercest and most fascinating political battles of the year' — a battle which looks set to pitch David Laws and Nick Clegg against George Osborne and the Labour leadership. The issue concerns the amount by which the Coalition should increase benefits: based on September's inflation figure, this should be 5.2%. The Tories are pushing for a below-inflation settlement, but Mr Laws — co-editor of The Orange Book, and firmly identified as an economic liberal — is urging the Lib Dems to reject such a move: Mr Laws, considered ...

My Father once said; The only man to enter parliament with honest intentions was Guy Fawkes - Look what happened to him! An excellent, thorough look at the works of the much-missed author, taking us through how Jones educates her readers subtly through her writing, which made me want to fill in the large gaps in my own reading of her works. "Is there anything you would not privatise?" That was the question I asked Brian Coleman, the controversial chair of London's Fire Authority — a public body which sadly is in the grip of an ideologically-driven Conservative administration thanks to shameless gerrymandering by London's Tory mayor Boris Johnson and unelected political appointees. My question to him was prompted by the Tories' current plans to privatise the London fire 999 emergency control room. Mr Coleman's answer? It was a bald and brazen "No": there's nothing he wouldn't try to privatise if he could. It's true that in the London fire service we ...
