Dr Liam Fox's future as a front line politican hangs by a very thin thread after the initial findings of the investigation into the access he granted Adam Werrity. It is clear that Fox broke the ministerial code and his apology doesn't make his behaviour and lack of judgement go away. Anyone watching Newsnight (sadly not yet available on iplayer) and seeing the usually sure footed Nick Boles sinking as he tried to defend the line, must realise that Fox's time is up. Tomorrow's newspapers also make grim reading. If Cameron and Clegg want to run a government that tries ...

Today's Times reports how: The Chancellor has infuriated No. 10 and Cabinet colleagues by refusing to endorse a key component in the policy to boost renewable energy. In an extraordinary move last week George Osborne was rebuked by David Cameron's aides for failing to come on board for a key green policy. At a meeting on Monday the prime minister's most senior official, Jeremy Heywood, gave a dressing down to an Osborne adviser over the Chancellor's failure to rubber stamp the new price that power companies will pay for renewable energy such as solar, wave and wind power. I do wonder how much attention Martin Kettle paid to the Liberal Democrat conference this year before concluding that policy debate at it was a thing of the past and that factions have gone quiet on the fringe (Guardian, 7 October). The former claim he basis on one vote that he disagrees with – and skips past all the many hours of policy debate there were at conference. As for the fringes, the reality at Liberal Democrat conference is that factions have always been very few in number and weak in allegiance compared to the other two main parties. But ...

Liam Fox would have us believe that he has made an error of judgement (albeit on a fairly continuous basis) by hanging out with his friend Adam Werritty whilst on government business (some 40 times at the MoD and on foreign visits) since he became a Secretary of State. He might have us believe that Werritty is merely a kind of grand intern, if that could ever be justified, but to everyone else it looks like too much 'grace and favour' at the fayre of high level lobbying. The flagrantly erroneous business cards handed out by Adam Werritty advertising himself ...
