The controversy surrounding the eviction of Irish Travellers of Dale Farm demonstrates the tension between equality before the law and the human rights of 400 people living at the site. Predictably the majority are on the side of the law and opinions are as far apart as possible. Many feel aggrieved that a certain ethnic group that has popularly been cast as inherently criminal could have more rights than them when it comes to planning and housing. If one group is advantaged, then it strikes against the notion of equality before the law. When the United Nations Special Rapporteur on ...

There are three interesting early 19th century graves in the churchyard at Bishop's Castle. There is the grave of Matthew Marston, the "Honest Burgess", who refused to exploit his position in the days when the town was a notorious Rotten Borough and died in 1802. There is the grave of I.D., "a native of Africa", who died at Bishop's Castle in 1801. And there is the grave of Lieutenant Colonel Louis Paces, a Napoleonic officer who died whilst a Prisoner of War at Bishop's Castle in 1814. Two recent changes have triggered the production of a new version of the London tube (plus London Overground) map: the opening of the latest (and most likely last for the foreseeable future) extension of the DLR plus the creation of an additional version of the "step free access" wheelchair logo. This means that the Tube map now distinguishes between stations with step free access to trains and stations where the step free access only extends as far as the platforms but you will have a step up or down to the trains themselves. You may have noticed the two versions ...

There were useful updates on DCA's community and education work and by Creative Scotland, and it was also good to learn that DCA is progressing towards Investors in People accreditation. The Board meeting was extremely positive and highlights the dynamism of this world-class centre for the development and exhibition of contemporary art and culture based in the West End of Dundee.

From an editorial in tomorrow's Financial Times:It is entirely right for ministers to care about business. But if the government is really concerned about smaller companies being squeezed, there are things it can do to help. If all else failed, it could simply subsidise them directly. But delaying bank reform will neither give businesses more credit, nor create the growth to help them prosper again.
