In my last blog post I wrote about the far left and how they use violence and force to make their point. Since then the horrible attacks in Norway have occurred because of far right views. We are experiencing the extreme sides of politics which are trying to dominate the centre ground. The centre ground is the position we must protect because it is the point at which all reasonable views meet to form a fair society. Liberalism is under attack. The Norwegian young people who died were future leaders with views that promoted the centre ground. I hope Norway ...

Name That Spider.

Today at work, Rob discovered a spider. She's a very cool spider. She's made her web in a hole in the beer garden, and she's put little trip wires all around it so that if any prey comes near she can come out and get it. I saw her take down a couple of fruit flies, but Rob saw her going for a wasp. She's very fast, and very brave (the wasp was bigger than her). We think she deserves a name. The thing is, she's definitely a she. So Boris and Aragog are not really suitable. And Shelob is ...

This graph of the growth of US Debt is truly astonishing. Note that the only time there was a slowdown in this remorseless growth was under the Democrat president, Bill ("It's the economy, stupid") Clinton. Then Republican George W Bush resumed the upward trend with his expensive arms expenditure and equally expensive tax cuts for the rich. Finally the almost universally republican banking and finance community, with supporting roles played by "businessmen" at firms like Enron, showed how a mix of reckless lending and hedge funds – plus a housing bubble for good measure – could destroy wealth and credit ...

The murderous crackdown against protestors taking place in Syria is a scandal of global proportions. This morning's Guardian revealed that a remarkable official counter-terrorism notice was circulated in London last week: There was no warning about other political groups, but next to an image of the anarchist emblem, the City of Westminster police's "counter terrorist focus desk" called for anti-anarchist whistleblowers stating: "Anarchism is a political philosophy which considers the state undesirable, unnecessary, and harmful, and instead promotes a stateless society, or anarchy. Any information relating to anarchists should be reported to your local police."That is a bit worrying, because I have an interest in anarchism myself. I have just spent a delightful week walking on the Gower in South Wales so have picked up only snippets of news. However, I gather that Vince Cable's department is to unleash entrepreneurial spirits by abolishing lots of red tape.
