After long deliberation, I have resigned from the Liberal Democrats. Sadly, I came to the conclusion that that was the only course left open to me after finding out what has been going on behind the scenes at national party level. Now I know how mushrooms feel... left in the dark and fed on manure. Perhaps I should have acted earlier once I discovered what was going on. It was tricky keeping quiet, but intelligence has to be carefully considered before it is used. One foolish person handed me back a laptop which had been used to log into emails ...

The cuts...

Okay I'm lacking imagination, I probably shouldn't write when this tired, but I feel like I haven't been writing enough lately! I was disappointed watching tonight's 10'O'Clock Live with their discussion on the cuts. This should be something that can be debated well, yet their choice of guests left a lot to be desired. Firstly someone from the Times who was there to defend the speed of government cuts backs, an activist who (although had perfectly good intentions) didn't fully grasp the economics of her argument and as a result said perfectly plausible statements that were just plain wrong and ...

It sounds a bit fishy

When the Rainbow Warrior was sunk by the French secret service there was a backlash against the French and their nuclear testing. It turned out that the French had to pay Greenpeace over $8 million and it caused testing to be halted. Sometimes subterfuge doesn't pay. Prior to the sinking New Zealand wasn't too bothered about French testing. After the sinking it sent a flotilla of yachts to Moruroa in order to protest. On Wednesday I saw footage of cruelty against an elephant and protests were taking place in Knutsford against the Bobby Roberts Super Circus who owned the elephant. ...

A good Labour council?

Labour leader Ed Miliband launched his party's local election campaign today saying he was 'proud' of the way Labour councils' had reacted to the cuts and promoting 'good' Labour councillors who were making difficult decisions. This can only be described as an unusual take on the reality, but sadly very much in line with their view that spending cuts are actually avoidable. So how does this view shape up to the reality? In Labour's flagship Southwark - snatched by a whisker on general election day from the Lib Dems - they recently passed their budget, cutting (among others) - five ...

Private Fostering Awareness Week ran from 21 to 27 March. This year named "Somebody Else's Child', the campaign aimed to raise awareness of the issues around private fostering and change people's response. Private fostering is when a young person under the age of 16, or under 18 if disabled, lives with somebody who is not their immediate family for a period of longer than 28 days. Examples of private fostering arrangements might include an older teenager who is living with their friend's parents due to a family breakdown or a child living with a family friend whilst a parent is ...

Central Bedfordshire Council has approved a new policy on the provision of free or subsidised transport for students in further education. The new Post 16 Transport Policy is being introduced following a public consultation with students, parents, carers and other interested parties that was completed in December 2010. While Central Bedfordshire is not legally obliged to provide free or subsidised transport for students aged 16 to 19, it must consider how it will help learners access further education. A key element of this in what is a very rural area is the provision of transport. The new policy replaces existing ...

On Tuesday I posted a video showing the final days of the Great Central. Of particular interest to me was the footage of Nottingham Arkwright Street. This station was memorably described by P. Howard Anderson in his Forgotten Railways: The East Midlands: Passengers aboard a train approaching Nottingham from the south enjoyed a superb panorama of the city rising away beyond the rooftops of Broadmarsh, and this sight could be quite breathtaking when familiar landmarks were silhouetted against an evening sky. But the occupants of the miserable dwellings overshadowed by Arkwright Street station were hardly appreciative of this spectacle, for ...

City AM has been following the stories over the last week, the most significant of which was a £10bn investment in Mariner and Bressay by Statoil. The short term impacts on the UK tax take are unclear. Existing fields facing marginal tax rates of ...

Dear Ed Milliband (I'm sure you all guessed who it was!), I have noted with interest that you today had one of your aspiring PMs in the basement of Labour HQ do some swift sums and concluded that the nefarious ... Continue reading →

Please check the expiry date on your South Glos Diamond Travelcard, as we understand that reminders are not sent when they run out. If your card has expired you will not be able to get free travel on buses or community transport, because they wouldn't be able to claim the money back from South Glos.

Chris comments: I am very sorry to hear that the Arts Council has not seen fit to continue funding to the Trestle Theatre Company. The quality of work of this local theatre company is outstanding and it is difficult to understand how such a decision could have been reached. Press release from Trestle On a morning of extreme highs and lows for Arts Organisations across England, we have received the unfortunate news that Trestle Theatre Company will no longer receive funding from the Arts Council; without this funding it will now be almost impossible for Trestle to tour its own ...

AV gone mad

Has this whole AV debate just gone mad!! I realise that its a bit of a different concept. Technically, first past the post is the easiest to deal with. PR is a little bit different. But lets face it, the use of AV is not just in England. This is a once in a generational matter. Crucial. It is fairer because the view of minorities are held a little more. Not as much as true PR but this is a good compromise. Today I read on the internet that Baroness Warsi thinks AV will play into the hands of the ...

In a major foreign policy speech in Mexico this week, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg laid out five reasons why intervention in Libya was the right course to take and different from Iraq. However, applying those five reasons to the Ivory Coast raises the question why it is being treated so differently from Libya. In his speech, Clegg said that Libya different from Iraq because: First, the Libyan action is unambiguously legal. Iraq was not. Second, there is a clear humanitarian case for intervention in Libya. In Iraq the case rested solely on the danger posed by weapons of mass ...

Since the General Election Liberal Democrats at every level, have been united in a belief that despite the dire national financial position, people in genuine need of help should not be prevented by financial barriers from attending school, college or training. This weeks announcement about Educational Maintenance Allowances is a big positive step in the right direction. 1. The government has recognised the need to continue to support people currently on EMA as they finish their studies. Therefore everybody who started their course this academic year and is on the £30 per week rate will continue to receive payments of ...

Last night we saw an excellent school production of a scaled-down Macbeth. (I'm not a luvvie so there'll be no "Scottish play" nonsense from me). It was an excellent production – flawlessly presented with some inspiring performances. It's a challenging play but these Year 9 students flawlessly presented their lines. It was a delight to see a boy playing one of three witches. All of the witches were just dressed in black T shirts and trousers. So, it was a bit weird hearing the boy being referred to as "sister". But it worked beautifully – trust me. What was even ...

Earlier this month, I blogged here and here about my Comic Relief favourite moments from the past 26 years from the release of the first charity single between Cliff Richard and the Young Ones, the first Red Nose Day in 1988 and the present day. Well, I felt it only right to bring that up-to-date with my favourite moments from this year's festivities which culminated in the record breaking £74m raised for charity on the night alone. A World Record For the days running up to Red Nose Day, March 18th itself, Radio One stalwarts Chris Moyles and Comedy Dave ...

If anything the influence of the Liberal Democrats on the Coalition is growing, and exceeds what they might have expected on the basis of their relatively ...

Fascinating article by Steve Richards in this morning's Independent in which he argues that the progressive alliance that is gathering around a yes vote in the forthcoming AV referendum underlines why Nick Clegg was right to go into coalition with the Conservatives last year: In the immediate aftermath of the election Gordon Brown urged Clegg to form a coalition with Labour on the basis that the two of them could deliver electoral reform. The campaign shows that neither Brown, nor any Labour leader, could have united his party around support for a change in the voting system. He could have ...

Michael Gove's amendments to the original EMA proposals were greeted by shrieks of "U turn" from the Labour Party. I find this regrettable. It would indeed be nice if governments always got things right at the first go, but when they do not and are prepared to listen and be flexible, in a grown up democracy that should be welcomed rather than mocked. The arguments for and against paying some students to continue their education beyond 16 are complex. My initial reaction to the EMA was the "grumpy old man" one that no-one paid me to stay on into the ...

The Cambridge Liberal Democrats have launched our manifesto for the 2011 City Council elections. The manifesto can be downloaded as a PDF from our main website. In the manifesto, the Lib Dems reaffirm their commitment to work for the benefit of the city and its residents. The manifesto identifies three guiding principles: •basic services - promising to keep the city clean and cared for by collecting waste, sweeping streets and caring for parks and open spaces; •vulnerable people's services - continuing play provision, keeping advice centres open and continuing with grants to those working with the homeless. the elderly and ...

I had hoped to be in London this morning for the launch of this document, but I am just too busy with the day job this week. So instead here is an extract from the official press release: The report is a comprehensive look at the human rights work of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) around the world in 2010. It highlights the UK's human rights concerns in key countries and is a further concrete demonstration of the Foreign Secretary's commitment to strengthening the FCO's work on human rights at home and overseas. The report is more comprehensive than ...
