An odd turn of events

From what I can tell, this is how it happened: First, someone working at ITV News forgets that they're logged into the work Twitter account, rather than their personal one, and tweets: "Nigella Lawson is nowhere near as attractive as she thinks she is" This is spotted, and retweeted, by Andy Reeves. I can do science, me.

So, about three hours ago, I stuck my coffee in the fridge since I didn't want to drink it and was curious what Starbucks' toffee nut latte would taste like cold. I got [IMG: [livejournal.com profile] ] mirkwood's partner, Dan, to fetch it from the fridge for me, unscrewed the cap and took a sip of my nice, cold coffee. Me: "What the fuck?! It's still hot! Having been struck by one of the many bugs flourishing in our present climate, I'm a bit late with these comments on the cabinet meeting which took place at Consett Civic Centre after all the visitors left on Wednesday, and admit they are fairly random. The first thing I noticed was in quite a technical report on the tax-base for coucil tax. I looked in vain for Consett in the localities listed, but then spotted my mistake. Comedy Curry

We went to see comedians Rufus Hound and Dave Fulton at "Comedy Curry" at New Greenham Arts last night. It was a superb show. The performers at New Greenham Arts usually refer to "Newbury" and being "in Newbury". Technically, it's in Greenham parish. The building was the entertainments centre on the American base, when the US Air Force was at Greenham. Dave Fulton, fittingly, is from Idaho, US and was very entertaining. He's a keen motorcyclist (he doesn't seem to like the term "motorbike"). He seems to have a collecton of bikes including a Triumph. Dave Fulton told a very ...

I hope that people will understand that Wendy and I will not be holding our regular 4th Saturday of the Month advice session on Saturday 25th December, as we assume that most people will be too busy cooking the turkey / munching through their selection boxes / unwrapping prezzies / arguing with their families (or all of the above) to turn up to chat. Last week I posted about the decision to increase parking charges including the huge rises proposed for Launceston. I pointed out that virtually all those who responded to the consultation (well over a thousand people) were against the increases but that the Parking Panel had decided to go ahead with them anyway. I suggested that, in the light of the rejection by consultees, the proposals should be abandoned and a new scheme should be designed but, for the coming year, we stick with the current charges plus the 6% increase demanded by the budget. On Monday I shall be ringing my phone company for a new phone as part of my contract. I want an HTC. I am vacillating between the HTC Desire and the HTC Desire HD. The HD is newer, and has a better display. The Desire is phenominally well-regarded. Both have dicky battery life, but the HD is reportedly worse. Ed Miliband has famously said that he is starting with a blank sheet when it comes to policy so it is hardly surprising that he is struggling to make an impact in the House of Commons and the country as a whole. I have advised the City Engineer that I remain concerned at the condition of numerous streets in the West End that are still very slippy underfoot with ice. There is a certain familiarity to the words used by Bob Ainsworth, the former Labour Home Office and latterly Defence Minister, who has announced his conversion to the belief that possession of all drugs should be decriminalised. The underlying motivation for the Big Society, as expressed by Cameron, could have come from one of the many Lib Dem / Liberal pamphlets or articles about community politics: It comes from the belief that over many decades this country has become too centralised, too bureaucratic and too top-down. Devolution?

Devolution of power to local communities has been part of the Liberal creed ever since I joined the party, so I suppose we should welcome Eric Pickles's proposals. However, if I were a trained and qualified librarian I think I should take a dim view of the local library service being handed over to a group of self selected Linda Snells. Liberals have aways understood devolution to imply handing responsibilities and powers (including tax-raising powers) to democratically elected bodies, but neither district nor parish councilors seem to feature largely in the Pickles proposals.
