I live an unusual life. By day, I am a mild-mannered tax official, doing a job which doesn't exactly stretch me. But away from the office, my life is... complex. I switch from the (relatively) intellectual slow lane to a life of high drama, low politics and intrigue, albeit some of it vicariously. You can see my problem, perhaps. Or perhaps not. You see, I quite enjoy having a low-octane job in that sense, as it comes as something of a relaxant, a relatively straightforward task which, without false modesty, I'm pretty good at. I can apply some intellectual rigour, ...

When the incident happened a number of weeks ago, it was quite frankly the most terrifying moment of my life. I never thought that it would happen to me in my own home. I felt safe here and had never ... Continue reading →

Lawrie's site - progress

Following my recent updates about the state of the former nursery site in Perth Road, it was good to note the badly damaged "For Sale" signs replaced during the past week - the new signs are pictured right. Following the actions of the City Council in contacting the owner, it is to be hoped that some trimming of the badly overgrown foliage on the site, particularly at the Perth Road boundary and adjacent to residents' homes at the southern edge, takes place soon.

Hooters and Feminism

I'm a feminist. But I might not be their kind of feminist. Or your kind of feminist. Or his kind of feminist. Or her kind of feminist. Unfortunately (and fortunately!) there are many kinds of feminism. It makes it a rich academic field, it makes it a potent political force (or did), and it makes it a hugely important area of thought to consider. Unfortunately, feminism as a concept is in danger. The proposal is not an example of free market liberalism. There will always be a tension between giving power away and then standing back as the people you give that power to do something that goes against another part of your political philosophy. In this case though, it seems the Prime Minister rather likes the policy. Iain Roberts discusses all this on Lib Dem Voice. Reading the comments it appears that the ...

Whilst certainly not wanting to tempt fate by considering AV as being in the bag, as it were, I believe that our support as a party is intrinsically linked to the policy goals, or 'destinations', that we uniquely define as being our own, and rather less than those compromised 'steps' towards such that we take in coalition. So AV gives us a preference based voting system that surmises the ability of the electorate to count, rather than to make a 'mark' and at least ensuring the constituency's elected representative commands a majority support. For some that might be a 'destination' ...
