You thought the agreement last Friday to devolve police and justice to a Northern Irish Ministry would be the end of the arguments. Well hold the horses don't be so confident. There is still debate as to who will take up the post. It had long been assumed that the Alliance Party would be the most acceptable party to hold the post and give the position a degree of neutrality. But the Ulster Unionist and SDLP are upset that this goes against the d'Hondt system of allocating Ministers by proportion of representation in the Assembly. David Ford the Alliance Party ...

I wasn't expecting that. The Times has reported its latest opinion poll. It has reported the changes in party share of the vote. And then Peter Riddell has said, These shifts are within the margin of error Why's that impressive? Because nearly every opinion poll only shows changes within the margin of error (you've usually got to look over a wider pattern to see statistically significant changes), but that doesn't stop newspapers writing up their stories as if the changes in support are significant and therefore ones we can be sure actually happened. It's as if the newspapers think, "Look, ...

In addition, it said that it was concerned that the Bill could create "over-broad powers". You can read the full story here.

Sir George Young has always seemed one of the more decent Conservatives. I felt sorry for him when Michael Martin was hoisted into the Speaker's chair ahead of him because of unthinking backbench determination that a Labour House should have a Labour Speaker. But his performance on the Today programme this morning, where he twisted and turned every way to avoid giving a straight answer on Lord Ashcroft's tax status, was embarrassing. It will be hard to regard him in the same light after that. The Guardian website has a transcript of this interview, together with excerpts from several others ...

Canvassing in Lazonby

There's a downside to canvassing in Penrith and The Border. We keep falling in love with little villages, such as Lazonby, Brampton, Longtown, Wigton, Langwathby, Hesket Newmarket, Winton, Crosby Garrett, Kirkby Stephen - the list goes on and on! There's literally dozens and dozens of beautiful little places where one day long in the future we could see ourselves retiring to - a little cottage with roses around the door and a border collie by the fire! Choices, choices!

[IMG: gmp.jpg] The latest Homewatch newsletter from Greater Manchester Police brings good news, highlighting a 15% fall in crime. The bad news is the spate of shed and garage break-ins over the past fortnight. 4 Sheds and 2 garages in Prestwich alone. There has also been the usual spate of thefts from cars. So keep those shed/garages locked and secure and don't leave items on display in your car. Remember thieves don't know that the box on your back seat is empty until they have smashed your window to get at it! The latest newsletter can be viewed and downloaded ...

"And the 'More Front Than Blackpool' award goes to [opens envelope] David Cameron! Dave wins this award for attempting to deflect responsibility for the expenses scandal away from the party that invented modern sleaze to the late challengers, New Labour. Dave has rightly pointed to the rank stench of the Labour Party but sadly he was unable to hide the odour of the rotting pile of limbs and fading grandees covered in a dusting of earth beneath the hastily erected green-tinged patio that is the modern Conservative Party. [Presenter puts his hand to his ear] "Well, sadly David can't be ...

20 years ago – no, 10 – you couldn't eavesdrop upon learned discussions like this one, between Austrians, Keynesians (and no doubt monetarists, somewhere). You would have to have invaded some university common room. Which I intend never to do. Check out the responses to 'Ben's' point about grandchildren paying for our mistakes, and also Greg ...

One of the difficulties in looking at the stats for Heartlands hospital is that they include figures for Solihull, Heartlands and Good Hope.I have obtained copies of the most recent statistics about A&E and put them in the window of my office. What they demonstrate is that the primary concern relates to Good Hope. I had a number of conversations about this last week and the hospital is putting in

With new polling figures in, the general election prediction model we covered in November and December has churned out a new prediction for the next general election – and it's a striking one: New prediction: Conservative lead of 6% but Labour largest party with 299 seats (27 short of an overall majority) December prediction: Conservative lead of 9% with 315 seats (11 short of an overall majority) November prediction: Conservative lead of 10% with 322 seats (4 short of an overall majority) The academic team who have compiled the prediction say, The race remains too close to call under reasonable ...

Bo is gone forever

Sad to read last week about one of the world's oldest languages dying out. I believe languages are an important part of culture and need preserving where we can, just like buildings. Because, when they're gone they're gone.

ITV has announced that on 14th Feb 2010 it plans to broadcast a one hour "interview" with Gordon Brown. Not a hard hitting political examination of the Prime Minister - his policies and actions over the last four years. Not a series of interviews where Gordon Brown, David Cameron, Nick Clegg (and possibly others) are likewise interrogated. No. This is Piers Morgan interviewing the PM. No other politician at any other point, just the PM. This is Piers Morgan - former editor of the pro-Labour party Mirror newspaper, up until 2004 (when he was sacked). This is Piers Morgan, Gordon ...

Half measures

Yesterday's Sunday Times had an interesting article that outlines exactly why Liberal Democrats are lukewarm about Gordon Brown's proposed referendum on voting reform. They report that Michael Thrasher and Colin Rallings, who are professors of politics at Plymouth University, have re-run the results of the 2005 general election as if Brown's alternative vote system were in place. They say that the results show that Labour's majority in the Commons would have risen from 66 to 82, with the Tories getting 15 fewer seats. The Liberal Democrats would have gained an extra nine. Labour, with 36% of the popular vote on ...

This feature has now been around for a little while, but it's not that well known. Also it can be hard to find information about it online as people often call it deep linking - which makes sense if you know the jargon but isn't the sort of phrase you'd otherwise guess is the one to look for. So here's how to create a link to a YouTube film which will start it playing part way through: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4L0pWUNp08#t=0m39s The key parts are: o4L0pWUNp08 - which is the unique reference code for the video. The rugby over, I deemed it safe to venture out of the hotel room, but only as far as the promised wine reception. You never know who you're going to run into, but I was delighted to meet Chris and Janet Thomas. Janet is a councillor in Swansea (Peter May's fellow ward councillor, to be precise) but of more personal relevance, they are Richard's parents. In 2006, East Dulwich elected its first Liberal Democrat councillors, Richard being one of them, and Chris and Janet spent, I would guess, six weeks in the area, delivering leaflets, and generally being fantastic. The ...

The second boot is already falling. The first part of the economic crisis which began in early 2008 was the meltdown of the US mortgage market. This led to a breakdown in the asset backed securities market, which could no longer rely on the collateral of US mortgages. This in turn saw the breakdown of the balance sheets of the major trading banks, the forced takeover of Bear Sterns, followed by the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers and the collapse of AIG. This forced governments to initiate rescue programmes for those banks most exposed to the secondary debt markets. The last ...

David Cameron launched an attack on Gordon Brown yesterday that may well be misconceived; He said: "There is no chance Gordon Brown will do what is right and put the public interest before his own political interests. He cannot reform the institution because he is the institution: he made it. The character of his Government — secretive, power-hoarding, controlling — is his character. "For the health of our democracy it is now essential that this shameless defender of the old elite goes as soon as possible." Of course given the chance to vote on expenses reforms in 2008 twenty one ...

The NHS is facing a £63bn bill for PFI hospitals which are only worth a fraction of that. The NHS still owes £58bn on more than a hundred PFI contracts over the next three decades, and will have to pay back more than £7bn in PFI payments over the next Parliament alone (2010-2015). This is the disastrous reality of Labour's managemant of the NHS. We're in one of the most difficult financial periods in the NHS's history and this Government's legacy will be a mountain of debt. Despite the huge sums of money we owe for these hospitals, many will ...

I am all for flags on every public building, but is spending in excess of a quarter of a million pounds on promotional flags the best use of public money? The majority of these promotional Saltires were also bought in the SNP's first year of minority government. The SNP in the first two years spent just £1657.83 on ceremonial flags including two car flags, compared to over £263,000 on promotional flags! As NHS Boards are considering drastic measures like cutting the number of nurses, or hospital beds to save money as they try to cope with a funding squeeze we ...

So four politicians are going to face charges relating to their expenses claims. It may be that Liberal Democrats come out of this relatively unscathed, but just like the example in Saturday's blog, it hardly matters to the general public. Tories ignore statistical advice - that's what politicians do. Make mistakes when you move money around after advice from someone that you are not going to name - well it doesn't matter that this is what Labour MP Jim Devine has done. This is what self-regulating politicians do. It doesn't matter that I have never been elected, never mind claimed ...
