David Cameron announced today that a Tory government would introduce a law preventing anyone who does not pay UK from sitting in parliament in the UK. So here's a question or two. 1) Why does he not make it a rule for Tory candidates and MPs now ? 2) Why, dsepite repeated reminders at press conferences an in TV interviews ove the last three years, has he never sought to tell Lord Ashcroft (The Tory party's largest donor) that he needs to be registered for tax in the UK ? It's all very well telling us what you would do, ...
Nick Perry, the Liberal Democrat parliamentary campaigner for Hastings & Rye, has welcomed two parliamentary questions tabled by Tim Farron MP on behalf of the under-10 metre fishing sector. Tim Farron has asked 'the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what consultation his Department undertook with the under 10metre fishing industry regarding the ...

Thanks to Durham police for clearing this one up. Having your DNA taken could harm your prospects even if you're an innocent person. A police person was quoted this week on the issue of mephedrone, a substance which it is legal to be in possession of. "In Durham police have taken a stance and anyone found with it will be arrested on suspicion of possession of a banned substance.... They will be taken to a police cell, their DNA and fingerprints taken and that arrest, depending upon enquiries, could have serious implications for example on future job applications". This revelation ...
Every time Dave tries tot ell us the Tories have changed, yes, we have, honest, guv, his own party conspire to undermine him. And he helped himself dig his own pit this week. Are the Tories competent? Not competent enough to avoid using phony information at Prime Minister's Questions. Tory claim on Islamic school dismissed. And has he stopped them being nasty? Not if Lord Monckton is anything to go by, Persistently and loudly comparing a young Jewish man to the Hitler Youth. Climate denier unmasked: Tory peer calls Jewish climate activists "Hitler Youth". Still incompetent, still very nasty.
Tory spin news of the day, has the BBC telling us breathlessly that David Cameron would pass a law (if elected) as "rapidly as [they] could" to ensure all peers and MPs would pay UK tax or quit. While this is to be applauded, the question remains "why wait?". Given that the two most high-profile "tax shirkers" are Lord Ashcroft (who is busy helping the Tories "buy" marginal seats up and down the country), and Zac Goldsmith (who has not paid his fair share of nearly £6m in tax during the past 10 years), why doesn't Cameron do something about ...
The police stopped and questioned a photographer going about his business in London: Photographer quizzed by "armed" police near Bank of America. Nothing unusual there as Britain#s finest have so little to do nowadays other than harass innocent snappers. But then an ITN film crew went to do a story about that event - and they were stopped too. ITN film crew stopped while covering photographer story. And that was after ACPO reminded police this week that taking photographs is not illegal.
Good result
At 5 a.m. the temperature in Edmonton was -46.1 C, or -58.4 C with wind chill. Don't emigrate to Canada. Don't even think about it.
First, a thank you to "scmjerram" for nominating my post about Liberal Vision complaining about a lack of debate of Global Warming for the Golden Dozen. Much appreciated. I had always wondered whether the suggestion that Tories were natural global warming sceptics was just political slander, of the sort you'd expect in our culture. Up there ...
The park in my own ward today, Carols in Newham Grange Park. What a lovely event it was too, organised by the local group, Friends of Newham Grange Park. A young man was playing a keyboard and around 50 people were there to sing the carols, including some people who came over from the new play area. Whilst it was cold we were all dressed up for the weather, although we did feel for the...

Dame Edna once said of Mother Teresa: "She does a lot for charity, but she's let herself go, hasn't she?" You could say much the same of Bob Geldof. Before he started saving the world from hunger he made some great records. Though looking at this now, even allowing for the fact that the performance is clearly being mimed, he does come over as a bit of a poseur. "Rat Trap" reminds me of my university days. Enjoy.
Rejoice is the theme of church services today - look back and repent, look forward with hope. But even at church people wanted to talk about the Park and the school. Surely there are other places to build was the chorus. People who don't live in Eaglescliffe but use the park regularly for their leisure wanted to be sure it wasn't going to be spoilt. It takes a long time to explain over and
Saturday's three hour session in Chapel Street gained a massive 1574 signatures - well in excess of our target of 1000. Together with the 5443 already collected, this now means that 7017 people have signed the "Southport Needs a Town Centre Library" Petition. As readers may be aware from earlier posts this week, the 5443 signatures collected by Wednesday were presented to that evening's meeting of Sefton Council's Overview and Scrutiny Committee. It was at that meeting that a call (led by my colleague, Birkdale Lib Dem councillor Richard Hands) for the issue to be referred back to the ruling ...
I was delivering leaflets in Birtley today and came across this Toddlers play area in Birtley. It has an expensive soft play surface, a picnic bench and, well, nothing else! One suspects that Gateshead council and the developers met the minimum standard of putting in a play area but neglected to put anything in it. Let me know if you have a worse play area.
Paul Samuelson's work showed that the possibility of speculation bringing disaster upon an economy is not a new one.
A bit late, but I tried to merge all these videos into one at the time. After a few days and several swear words, I gave up. So here's a few separate clips of a gripping rescue by helicopter in Fowey, Cornwall on August 20th this year. A lady had unfortunately fallen from a Quay onto the ground below. The Royal Navy was scrambled and the lady was successfully evacuated to hospital (where I understand she recovered), watch by many "emmets" (tourists) who included myself, standing on Fowey Town Quay.
After a lengthy, but quite pleasant journey, we arrived at Earley, where we had an engagement to meet Steve Scarrott, victor of the recent Radstock by-election, and Prue Bray, our Group Leader on Wokingham Council and PPC for Wokingham. Our first activity was to visit some of our canvassed supporters from the by-election, to see if they would be willing to do some delivering for us. The first two doors yielded success, much to my surprise, as did my fourth. It was clearly time to stop before I pushed my good fortune and evident natural charm too far... A pitstop ...
Once Parliament is Prorogued Members of Parliament still receive their salaries but may not campaign during the election period as 'Joanna Blogs MP', indeed they have to drop the 'MP' for the duration. In the last General Election it was noted that many a was-MP-now-candidate had to stop using their 'normal' website — because it included 'MP' in the domain — and create a separate election website. They could retain the old one, just not update it. Well next year we'll be seeing a similar problem arising with all those MPs who Twitter or use FaceBook. People such as [IMG: ...

PHNAT feels now is the time for a mass ...
There is a post from Iain Roberts on LDV today which explains how the Vetting and Barring scheme (which I have blogged about previously here and here) has been modified slightly. Iain describes it as the government "backing down". I am afraid I cannot really agree. Iain quotes from a Telegraph report: It will now be a much more common-sense regime. Under the new scheme, the definitions for whether or not an adult must register have been loosened. Any activity that brings an adult into contact with children for four or more days a month, or involves any overnight contact, ...
Sec Clinton tells the international community to put away the carrots.. Iran isn't complying with U.N Security Council resolutions, they're suspected to be shipping arms and ammunition to Syria and they're refusing to compromise with the IAEA.
My Lib Dem ward colleague Martin Newton recently highlighted just one way Haringey Labour are neglecting Fortis Green. Haringey Council are only providing £5,000 to fund a new children's centre in Fortis Green ward. This was revealed as part of a welcome announcement of further funding for children's centres across Haringey - but the allocation for Fortis Green compares with other wards getting up to £495,500. Fortis Green is the only ward in the borough not to have a children's centre and with 5,000 quid that looks set to continue. Facilities like this should be where there is need, of ...
Some clips from a magical street performance in the dark in Newbury today. It was "Reve d'Herbert" by Quidams. It was great to see a vast crowd enjoying the performance as it made its way up Northbrook Street and finished in the Market Place.
As if to back up yesterdays posting about the demise of the music industry thanks to so called 'talent shows' like X Factor, the BBC news website published a story tonight talking about HMV reduction in losses year on year after the loss of a number of competitors in the industry retail sector. Happy Chanukah to all the Jewish people who read this blog. I hope the festival is enjoyable for everyone celebrating it. I often think that the story of Chanukah is about the closest to a biblical version of modern day local government as we're likely to get. Back then, there was only enough oil to keep the lights in the temple burning for a day. The oil supply meanwhile, was a week's journey away. God's work meant that the light kept on burning anyway. These days, it seems that Councils are being asked to provide lots more, despite being given ...
I noticed this evening that more of the Christmas lights are out in Cheadle - including several along the High Street that were working a few days ago. I've reported these to the Council's street-lighting people who I imagine will be as frustrated as me that the lights are faulty.

Tuvalu vs. China Tuvalu is a small Pacific Island state, with the third smallest population of the sovereign states (about 12,000 people). In UN terms, they aren't a heavy weight like China (population 1,345,751,000, estimated, last census was in 2001). However, what we saw last week was a diplomatic exchange of blows between these two delegations ...

Last night I went to Penstowe Manor at Kilkhampton for one of Launceston Amateur Boxing Club's fundraising shows. I'm afraid that I wasn't there for the dinner, but from the look on the faces of the diners it seems that the food went down well. The boxing itself was 12 bouts featuring contests between a wide range of boxers aged from about 10 upwards. (It's not often that the reaction of the crown to a boxer is 'ahhh'). As ever, safety is paramount and gloves, headgear and other protection is rigorously checked before each fight and between rounds. The boxers ...
I can't believe that there's anyone reading this who wasn't at late night shopping in town on Saturday (the streets were packed). But huge congratulations to my colleague Sasha Gillard-Loft and everyone involved in the whole event. From parading camels to mulled wine and elves, it was a great evening and did the town proud.

[IMG: Screenshot of www.libdems.org.uk] Revealed: the colour for the year 2010. Pantone, the company that produces a system for standardising colour references, have declared turquoise the colour of the year 2010. (That's PANTONE® 15-5519 Turquoise, taxonomy fans!) "...an inviting, luminous hue... Combining the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green, Turquoise evokes thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a languorous, effective escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring our sense of wellbeing." [Pantone website] Coincidence, or not, that turquoise features strongly in the Liberal Democrats' new extended colour palette? By ...
For more than a month now Paul Staines, aka Guido Fawkes, has been running 'Guy News' in addition to his regular blog posts on Order Order. As one would expect from the rebellious libertarian each segment is irreverent, edgy and funny. Staines is not acting alone. He has Tory Bear and Emily Nomates to help as well as Liberal Vision's Sara Scarlett. Staines has firmly established his blog as a must read for all those interested in Westminster politics. His latest challenge to traditional media promises to be as innovative and as interesting as any of his writing.
I came across this site after a comment was posted to the blog this afternoon by one of its members Dave Page. The National Identity ...
This week saw two Governments take very different strategies to deal with very similar levels of budget deficits (around 12% of national income). In Ireland the finance minister, Brian Lenihan, announced plenty of painful measures. Cuts in public sector pay and welfare benefits will save around 7% of government spending. Pay cuts range from 5-15%, disability benefit is cut 4% and child benefits by 10%. The positive side of this pain is that taxes are kept down and the budget should be back to a normal 3% deficit by 2014. In the UK, by contrast, Alistair Darling glossed over the ...

I have sent another complaint to the BBC regarding the 1 o'clock news today on R4 with their coverage of non-doms and Parliament. This is the text: At 13:04 – 13:05 there was an item about David Cameron's policy on the taxation status of candidates. He was allowed to present his case and there was a follow-up ...
Hollow laughter seems an appropriate response to this: Members of the House of Commons and the House of Lords would have to demonstrate that they are full UK taxpayers, under proposals outlined by David Cameron today. He said the Conservative party would legislate so that any Member or Lord would be forced to stand down if they were found to be not paying tax in the UK. The only people I can think of that such legislation would possibly call into question, now or in the recent past, are Lord Ashcroft and Parliamentary candidate Zac Goldsmith. Both are Conservatives. So ...

Yesterday evening was spent attending a black tie dinner in support of Swansea and Gower Liberal Democrats. Not having had much detail about the event in advance, I was pleasantly surprised that we would be in Swansea City's swish new venue, Liberty Stadium (how appropriate is that for a Liberal Democrat event?). In the presence of the award-winning Cllr Peter Black AM, and the Audrey Hepburn-like Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, Kirsty Williams, the evening sped along, although my cold was making life a little trying. A bottle of Patagonian Malbec helped a bit though, and winning a bottle ...
So writes today's Observer: Zac Goldsmith, David Cameron's green adviser and a prospective Tory MP, has been accused of avoiding the payment of nearly £6m in tax during the past 10 years by adopting non-domiciled status. Goldsmith, the prospective Conservative candidate for Richmond Park, is estimated to have a personal fortune of at least £200m, inherited from his late father, Sir James Goldsmith. Goldsmith admitted last month that he had claimed off-shore "non-dom" status. Since the news became public, he has said he has given it up. However, the Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman, Chris Huhne, has calculated that Goldsmith ...
Millions of people in the UK, like me for example, listen to MP3 players on their way about the world, either as a distraction from the other noise about us or simply to enjoy our favourite music. We put our headphones on and head off out into the world walking to beat without a care ...
David Cameron has said that, if elected, his Government would rush through a bill that forces all MPs and Peers to pay full UK tax. This really is pathetic. It was promised at the time of Lord Ashcroft being made a peer that he would register as a full British tax payer, yet despite this ...
Most of our local charity shops collect used stamps - foreign, UK commemorative or just plain "ordinary" stamps - and sell them on to dealers. Please keep all those stamps you get at Xmas or indeed any time of year and take them in. Alternatively you can drop them off to Paul Hulbert at 35 Blaisdon (he's collecting them for Cancer Research) or leave them at Dodington Parish Council for him to collect.
Whilst Wales' only Sunday paper indulges in sexism by bitching about what clothes female politicians wear the real political gossip can be found here on Freedom Central. This is the blog that broke the news about Mohammed 'Oscar' Ashgar's defection from Plaid Cymru to the Tories, a full 25 minutes before any other news outlet reported it. That crossing of the floor has provoked a real storm about whether Oscar should give up his seat, which by rights under the top-up list system belongs to Plaid Cymru, the party, rather than him personally. However, I learnt last night from reliable ...
I spent an inspiring evening last Thursday at The Box in Epping High Street. Most people in Epping will have passed the premises many times and perhaps peered through the windows and wondered what goes on inside. The Supporters' Evening was a marvellous opportunity to find out. The Box describes itself as "a social space, information point and education centre for young people" but it was clear that activity goes far beyond this. As well as providing open drop-in sessions, The Box enables young people to access specialist counselling, health and advice services. [IMG: Trustee Alison Dolan explains the success ...
I am off to Parliament Square now. I have another session this afternoon of shooting videos and taking photos for parliamentary candidates. Only one customer today but more on Monday and Tuesday. I had to deal with an email from the Journal in the middle of filming yesterday. They have picked up on some questions I asked at Gateshead Council on Thursday about funding the proposed conference
Two weeks ago, Scotland. This weekend, Wales, and in particular, Swansea. After a lengthy train journey - engineering works causing a detour via Gloucester, we were met by Peter May, the PPC for Swansea West, a key target seat for 2010, and John, the campaign organiser. Whilst we were ostensibly there to do a fundraising dinner for Peter and his campaign team, we had time to look at some of the successes of the Liberal Democrat-led administration. Our first visit was to the new library at the Civic Centre, with its views over Swansea Bay, a nice little cafe, and ...
Chris Huhne has told the Observer that in his estimation, Zac Goldsmith's non-domiciled tax status has cost the British taxpayer nearly £6 million over the last ten years. This is despite that fact that he is estimated to have a personal fortune of at least £200m, inherited from his late father, Sir James Goldsmith. Mr. Huhne has calculated that Goldsmith is likely to have avoided, at a conservative estimate, around £580,000 a year in UK taxes over the past decade as a result of being defined as a non-dom. In reply Mr. Goldsmith dismissed the figures as "fantasy", and said ...
Alex Salmond keeps telling us he has the right to govern Scotland and to an extent he is right, he party does have the largest block in Holyrood. But his decision in 2007 to form a minority Government means that he has to work with others to get things done. If Aaron Sorkin were to really want to top The West Wing in behind the scenes dealing he should really look at the foot of the Royal Mile. When Labour announced the Pre-Budget Report the SNP immediate reaction was to snipe about the cuts that would end up being made ...
Back in September, I was interviewed by Matt Wardman of the Wardman Wire blog over the phone. It has taken a little while but Matt put the interview online in audio form on Friday. You can access it here. We discussed various subjects but the main focus was on getting wider coverage (including mainstream media) for blogs and what can happen to nuance when blogposts get mainstream coverage.
The recent selection of Jenny Chapman to be the Labour Party's candidate in Darlington means that there are now two truely local candidates for the seat, Jenny and myself. Conscious of his unwanted tag as the outsider, Edward Elgar, the Conservative Candidate, has this weekend been furiously delivering a glossy, full-coloured leaflet (even to Rise Carr, not known as a hot bed of Tory voters) in
Earlier this week, I advised of the City Council Chief Executive's positive response to my request that street lighting replacement policy be altered so that streets like Seafield Road - where lamp posts have been removed following damage by motor vehicles - can get their street lights replaced. On receipt of the Chief Executive's feedback, I asked the City Engineer how quickly the light at the south end of Seafield Road can be replaced, and I have now been advised as follows : "Due to the need to liaise and arrange with Scottish & Southern for the power supply and ...
Further to my article last Wednesday about the footpaths of Elliot Road, I have now been advised by the City Council that the proposed project has (subject to the outcome of resident consultation) been brought forward to wek commencing 11th January 2010. The City Development Department has advised : " ... unfortunately there are delays to the approvals with the another project hence Elliot Road being brought forward to the 11th."
Over at the Daily Mail, is the shine coming off Brand Cameron, or, is this just a kick up the pants? First comes the big slap...then the boot, with a stiletto heel. Daily Mail, leader-column, 12.12.09: "At a time like this, it's madness to ring-fence any budget at the expense of the rest. Even sacred cows can be hugely overweight. Since 1977, billions have been poured into health and education, without the improvements in standards we'd expect. "How can Mr. Darling claim there's no scope for cuts in the NHS, on the day we learn it is spending £1 million ...
To this post 'Climate Gate' I had a recent comment that really made me think about something else other than the subject matter too hand for which the comment was replying too. I also think that my reply is to long for a comment in this case. Leonard Weinstein said... "dazmando, I am a scientist (Physics and Aerospace Engineering) and have read much of the literature. I started out accepting the AGW position until I had gone into the issue in depth. I am qualified to give an opinion on the subject, and have been a skeptic for many years. ...
[IMG: http://www.wikio.co.uk] [IMG: straw-wants-national-victims-service-7044260300.jpg] For the second time since 2005, Gov't has used its veto following a ruling to release material by the Information Commissioner. Commenting on Jack Straw's decision to block the publication of minutes of a 1997 Cabinet meeting on devolution requested under the Freedom of Information Act, Liberal Democrat Shadow Justice Secretary, David Howarth said: Ministers are losing their sense of proportion in their desperation to avoid political embarrassment. This completely undermines Labour's claims to be committed to open government. The veto is clearly a threat to freedom of information and should be abolished. It is an ...
The Government has backed down over its controversial Vetting and Barring scheme. Designed to protect children, many were concerned it would have the opposite effect. It widened the net on which adults needed to be vetted, extending in some cases to authors visiting schools and adults giving kids a lift to clubs and activities. Might this have resulted in more harm to children through lost opportunities as perfectly safe adults became unable or unwilling to help children? I think it may have. A friend of mine was asked to help at our local Scouts. She was happy to, and duly ...
Walk south along the Brampton Valley Way from Market Harborough and after a mile or two you come to the Waterloo Tearoom. It is part of a leisure development involving chalets and fishing lakes that wasn't there a few years ago. According to its website: We offer the quintessential English tearoom experience. I've written before about what a wonderful influence my Granny has been on my life, but I've never told you about my other fantastic Grandma. Between them, these two inspiring and very different women helped to shape the person I am today. Marion Lindsay was my other Grandma. She passed away 25 years ago today, when I was 17. Her death was really the first time I had experienced that horrible, searing pain of loss that cuts right through you every part of your mind and body. I miss her to this day. I'm maybe a bit surprised that I ...
Since the publication of the report last week into Kim Holt's (one of the Senior Consultant Paediatricians in the Haringey Child Protection team) allegations of bullying by management - which have seen her on 'special leave' for two years - I hear tell of what appears to be intimidation, or at very least, harassment. Many professionals who work in the various departments associated with child protection - health, children's services, etc. - gave witness statements to the report's authors supporting Kim - stating how valuable her work was, what an excellent professional she was and what an advocate of good ...
I saw this story first on the BBC news newspaper review yesterday morning, and found myself intrigued that a story of one of the Army's finest who has come out to his fellow troops was being covered by a red top newspaper in a positive way. So, firstly ten out of ten to The Sun. (I really never thought I would hear myself ever say that!) But it does prove that finally gay people are being accepted, accepted that our sexuality does not change how we do our job, bizarrely we don't all jump on every person we see of ...
Stockport Council's Revenues and Benefits Team won the 'Quality of Service and Innovation Award' by creating extra capacity for the department through working more efficiently. Instead of cutting jobs the spare capacity was offered to other Local Authorities and Benefit processing work taken on. This brought in extra income for Stockport Council and enabled jobs to be retained that would otherwise have been lost. The success of this scheme meant that the Revenues and Benefits team were able to create Apprenticeship posts for 12 local young people to train as Benefit Assessment Officers. There are plans to further increase the ...

We have had reports of vehicles driving the wrong way down this street. This is clearly astonishingly dangerous and the matter has been referred to the Police for enforcement. Any detailed information about specific incidents would be welcome.
As of Friday 11 December 2009 The drop in the number of flu cases is thought to show that we have passed the peak of the second wave. However, there is significant variation across the age groups. There has been a marked decrease in flu cases amongst young adults and older children but the under 5s continue to suffer high levels of respiratory illness and are being hospitalised in greater numbers than other age groups. Hertfordshire GP practices and community staff continue to vaccinate those in the priority groups. Nationally, decisions on how the second wave of the swine flu ...
It's 5.30 pm. The temperature outside is currently -29C, -34C with wind chill, and it is forecast to fall to -38C overnight, and reach -30C during the day tomorrow.
If your job is to clean the floor then you would think it is fairly straightforward and so there would be little pressure. You would be wrong. Pressure comes from within you and if you could have done a little better then you may feel guilt. Nobody works without moments when they are not concentrating. Some people take unauthorised breaks and it doesn't matter what job you are doing, if you know that you could do better then so could your manager. One question this week on Any Questions was about the great moral question of the day. Is it ...
