USB memory sticks are normally touted as being small and convenient, despite not being so at all. Most are quite large. This one, however, is just half the size of an SD card and easily fits in your wallet. And if The Man is breaking down your door, it's small enough to swallow. I am grateful, once again to the other parties in Reading for highlighting the hard work of my Lib Dem colleagues and I on behalf of the local communities we were elected to serve. Sharing the pain

Frankly, I think that it is a bit of a cheek for a Vodaphone representative to argue to the Welsh Affairs Select Committee that Wales is losing out on mobile phone coverage because of nimbyism. Their solution to a better service appears to be more masts. Yet they have proved it is possible to share networks for 999 calls in Wales, thus alleviating the need for more of these intrusive structures. Why cannot they do the same for non-emergency calls? If I go abroad then my mobile finds the nearest network. Surely that arrangement can be put in place here ...

Hyndford Street

I am delighted that the pavement in Hyndford Street has now been brought up to standard and adopted by the local authority. See earlier article about this by clicking on the headline above. Residents are naturally pleased at the improvement, summed up by the following e-mail to me last week: "I am sure you will know that Hyndford Street has just been upgraded to an adopted standard. Thank you for your involvement over the past years ! It has been appreciated. No more old folk, prams, wheelchairs etc taking risks by preferring to walk on the road."

The saga in the Health Service is the same as the saga in Child Protection. The introduction of targets changes the decisionmaking processes to lead towards hitting the targets. That is what they are supposed to do.In areas in which the decisionmaking processes are complex and require subtle judgment targets are more damaging in ways that cannot easily be forseen than in making rivets.

The joy of blogging

I wander into Market Harborough one Saturday morning, come across a charity sale, buy an obscure DVD starring James Robertson Justice and write about it. Now that posting comes up on the first page if you Google "James Robertson Justice". Incidentally, I seem to be on an early James Robertson Justice kick at the moment. I picked up a video of the Ealing drama Against the Wind in a Leicester charity shop on Saturday.

The BBC is reporting a study, reported in the Lancet, claiming to show that having a BMI of between 30 and 39 reduces your life expectancy by three years. It may or may not be true. The reported conclusions from these studies often seem at odds with the evidence in the papers themselves. I haven't read the full study, so we'll wait and see. But let's assume it is true. Let's work on the basis that a moderately obese person will, on average, die three years earlier than they would have had they been at their optimum weight. So what? ...
