Carrot cake anyone?

Not the most obvious of blog posts but this was the blog's first birthday so some carrot cake seemed in order. I have no idea what I thought the reception might be when i started the blog and looking back it seems like such a long time ago. It has been variously described as interesting, quirky, compelling and managed to come in at 24th Lib Dem Blog in the annual charts. All in all I have enjoyed it - I hope you my reading friends have too... More to come, but for now, a virtual slice of my homemade carrot ...

Top blogging: In the judges' despair and Sergeant's popularity can be detected the elitist's fear and mistrust of the mob. In public life today, politicians are keen to give away power, to palm off responsibility onto unelected quangoes and committees or upwards to Brussels or the IMF, to appeal to supposedly objective science. For to decide questions in a manner that is politically accountable is to allow the public to have a voice. And except in questions of "law and order", where public prejudices may to a limited extent be indulged, this is to go against the grain of a governing ...

Ken Livingstone famously said that if voting changed anything, they'd abolish it. The US Presidential elections proved him wrong. Listening to Newsnight discussing the failures of Liberata over students' maintenance allowances, I feel I should point out that it has no connection with the esteemed Liberator magazine even though it is pronounced the same way. Nor does the magazine have anything to do with Jabez Spencer Balfour and the Liberator Building Society: In the late 1860s, he was employed by and soon became the head of the Liberator Building Society, which lent money to the deserving. The idea of "philanthropic finance" had great appeal for Britain's Nonconformists, and the society's slogan — "a free home makes a free man" — ...

We have had a call from the Liberal Democrat parliamentary office that Arlingclose have objected to the content of our blog about treasury management. Whilst I welcome the decison to bring forward the long awaited dual-ling of the Barton Mills to Elvedon stretch of the A11. There are still no plans to make sure that we have a road fit for purpose for the first half of the 21st Century. Unless plans come forward for the upgrading of Fiveways then congestion will ensue, economic growth in the Mildenhall area will suffer and the local population consequently will lose out from any benefit from the scheme. On the same night as celebrations of Barack Obama's historic victory two weeks ago, there was the troubling rejection of existing recognition of gay marriage in the state of California by voters there. Many LDV readers will be familiar with Keith Olbermann, the MSNBC news anchorman, whose on air editorials on progressive issues seek to counter-balance those of the right-wing Fox News. Here's his latest "special comment" on the issue. His style is noticeably more measured in this one, perhaps after being satirised by the comics of Saturday Night Live a few weeks back.
