How much are we worth ?

Gravatar A question I hardly dare ask of some people! Tomorrow we are debating the level of Council allowance we get as a Councillor. Before tax I get £525.33 a week, which on my payslip shows up as £3.26 an hour. I assume that is assuming we work 37 ½ hours a week - if only! I have worked that amount this week already, it being 15 hours today before I put finger to keyboard for the...

Controversial Rye playground - Cllr Trevor Snaith - July 2008

Gravatar Do your councillors listen to residents im often asked. Yes your Local Liberal Democrat councillors do. Im constantly being told that the Tory controlled Council and Tory cabinet do not appear to be in touch with the needs of the Town. To date I have seen over 30 comments from concerned residents on the new children's play area. So what are the main issues being raised by residents; • Lack of consultation with local residents and groups • Concerns over location of play area • Area not easy to monitor and police • Will become a late night magnet for drinking and antisocial problems ...

Torturing Christopher Hitchens

Gravatar When I was at Oxford, Christopher Hitchens (then at Balliol, and an International Socialist) was viewed with a degree of awe and envy. He often disappeared off to London, where he was reputed to have sex — an activity in remarkably short supply in the City of Spires in those days. Anyway, he subsequently drifted [...]

Vince Cable: ' Allow councils to buy up unsold private housing stock'

Gravatar Returning from Islington's East Area Planning Committee this evening, where we have to balance private developments with the ever increasing demand for social housing, I have only just seen Vince's Guardian article, offering a simple solution to the housing crisis. Vince argues, that the government should allow housing associations and councils to borrow against their balance sheets, and buy unsold residential properties at a discount from private developers, who are struggling, and laying off builders. There are currently 1.7 million people on council housing waiting lists - around 13, 000 alone in Islington. The stock of social housing has shrunk ...

Vatican, schmatican!

Gravatar Apparently the Vatican is 'angry' with the vote by the Church of England Synod to allow women bishops. I don't like to over-react but I trust the Vatican and every cardinal will hold in their hearts an image of me raising a friendly salute in their direction in a gesture indicating how highly I value their opinion. Apparently the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem has had the good grace to not get involved in the internal politics of another religion. If only the Archbishop of Canterbury had any resolve whatsoever, he would tell them where to stick their views as well. ...

Defending the unfashionable

Gravatar The spectacular Politics Home Index website has alerted me to yet more gems today, in the shape of a couple of articles defending MPs and taking a swipe at the screeching media who are enjoying lambasting them with even more gusto than normal at the moment. The first half of this article, and the whole of this one provided readers of The Times and The Independent with an opportunity for a more balanced opinion of the current debate raging about the merits of MPs, and the dubious rationale for their wages and expenses. I've said on here before that I ...

Coughing on the Police

Gravatar This evening I had a very enjoyable and informative "working dinner" with the Prestwich Local Area Partnership Manager and the local Police Sergeant, discussing police targets for the Prestwich Plan. It was the second time I'd been for tea to Croma in 48 hours, and having admired my Sunday night companion's pizza from across the table then, I ordered it tonight. Traditionalist fury over Women Bishops

Gravatar I'm pleased the Church of England's Synod has voted in favour of allowing women bishops without giving into the traditionalist's demands. Maybe the church will do better off with the traditionalists leaving. I don't believe their arguments stand up. They talk about Jesus and his disciples, but the way I see it Jesus did have female disciples. And who were the first people according to the gospel to hear the good news that Jesus had risen? Women-Jesus trusted the women to spread the good news for him. He didn't just give tasks to men. The Vatican is interfering now. Saying ...

But of course anyone who knows anything about oil will now by then there won't even be any oil left for them to burn. Also if we stopped in 2050 the effects of Climate Change would continue for another 50years as the carbon dioxide reaches the atmosphere. So we are all doomed! After 2018 cluster bombs will be more effective

Gravatar A while ago I actually congratulated the UK Government on joining the drive to get rid of cluster bombs. I also went on about how the US wasn't interested and how terrible the bombs are. They cover huge areas and many fail to detonate successfully. But maybe the US Government are starting to change their minds. Not much, they don't want to ban them (like most countries), they want to advance them. The new plan is that cluster bombs in the US made after 2018, 99% of the bomblets will be successful in blowing someone up sooner rather than later. ...

Women bishops

Gravatar Dragged kicking and screaming - the Church has sort of voted for women bishops. Hurrah! If the Church had wanted to preserve its tradition of male dominance - then fine (well not fine) - but it should have given up the 26 places for Bishops of the Church of England in the Lords: we shouldn't hand over a wedge of seats in our Parliament and say 'men only'. NHS and Philosophy (Part Two): Co-Payments

Gravatar Now given that we have said that there should be social institutions ensuring health care provision, what about the flipside? Recently, the debate has moved back to the issue of co-payments in the NHS. NHS Blog Doctor has posted a passionate defence of the "free at the point of us" principle in the NHS and against the two-tier health service that would be brought in with the introduction of co-payments. The remainder of Suffolk Authority (minus Lowestoft) would be an authority with no natural centre.
