Sunday Times praises Lib Dem economic expertise

Gravatar Here is an unexpected pleasure to savour over tomorrow's marmalade. Martin Ivens writes: The party that can draw on a first division of economic talent, is, surprisingly, the Liberal Democrats. Apart from the reassuring figure of Treasury spokesman Vince Cable, a former chief economist at Shell, other frontbench heavyweights - Chris Huhne, David Laws and Steve Webb - have a wealth of practical expertise in finance, economics, pensions and taxation law that the government and the official opposition struggle to match.

London Pride

Gravatar The sun shone on London Pride today. My precautionary umbrella became no more than a theatrical prop. Four of the top five Liberal Democrat European candidates (Dinti Batstone, Chris Le Breton, John Pindar and myself) were on the march through London's West End. Our colleague, (Baroness) Sarah Ludford MEP was understandably celebrating her mother's 90th [...]

The A-Z of Politics - E is for Expenses

Gravatar In politics, expenses are used to top-up an otherwise frankly ridiculous salary. This is as true of MPs as their staff. An MPs salary is not enough to attract people of the right calibre to the commons so there needs to be a few perks to make life easier for the brats. If you work in a large organisation many of the people at the top will earn more than an MP. However, this argument falls down when you consider the fact that a CEO doesn't usually get a whole second home with John Lewis furnishings included as a company ...

Will the Real Labour Candidate Please Make Themselves Known

Gravatar It's like watching the reveal on Never Mind the Buzzcocks. Yesterday Labour were all set to select their candidate, favourite being George Ryan, for the Glasgow East By Election. On paper it's one of the safest seats Labour have in the entire UK and you'd expect them to be beating down the door to have a change to stand there. Mr Ryan failed to show up stating family reasons. On the way over to

Ray Lewis: Liar defends being deceitful

Gravatar Following the resignation of deceitful liar Ray Lewis after a series of revelations which exposed him as a man with a Walt Disney-like aversion to the truth. Thankfully, Mr Lewis has taken the time to explain his position to Gavin's Gaily Gigest in a specially drafted statement*: "Yesterday I made the decision to resign as deputy mayor [...]

Mugabe caught with his fingers clearly in the till

Gravatar The latest BBC video clearly shows vote rigging organised by Mugabe's Zanu PF. The resolution passed by the African congress last week is being ignored by Mugabe's officials. With Clear evidence against Mugabe I hope that South Africa's president Thabo Mbeki who is in Zimbabwe will be able to persuade Mugabe to stand down and have a peaceful end to the blood shed in Zimbabwe...

'Boris: The Wheels are falling off already' - Mail

Gravatar Mind you, it's only two months since they said that Boris was having the 'last laugh'. Apparently not: The Tories suffered an embarrassing setback last night after Boris Johnson was forced to sack his deputy for lying about his past. Ray Lewis, a charismatic community leader, was dumped after what looked like a catastrophic misjudgment by the new London mayor. A torrent of allegations about Mr

Haringey Council: 13 years behind schedule

Gravatar I think this press release pretty much speaks for itself! Delays in Haringey Council making important decisions effecting residents' schools, houses and key services currently total 4,937 days - or more than 13 years - it has been revealed by the Liberal Democrats. Haringey Council's monthly forward plan, which lists important decisions to be made by the Labour-run council in the next four months shows that only three out of sixty-three decisions will be made on time. Local Liberal Democrats have criticised Haringey Council for failing to decide on key projects and have said that residents will bear the brunt ...

Labour Crisis spreads to Scotland.

Gravatar The depth of the Labour crisis has now spread to Scotland, with the Labour front runner that was expected to win the contest for selection for the Glasgow East by-election failed to turn up for a selection meeting on Friday. Mr Ryan later cited family reasons for pulling out. The July 24 by-election has been triggered by Labour MP David Marshall's resignation on health grounds....

Clipper returns

Gravatar What a great day out at the Albert Dock today. We went along to see the return of the Clippers after their 10 month race around the world. The Liverpool boat didn't win, but by the sounds of it the crew had a great experience. We know one of the crew - Tony Loftus. He lives not far from us and has a shop on the Albert Dock. Shop staff had hung a banner saying 'start working hard - the boss is back'. By the sounds of it, the various Clippers have made a lot of people's dreams come true ...

FT lays into Cameron

Gravatar Conservative Home puts it very well: Not a great press day for the Conservative Party. The newspapers are full of stories about Ray Lewis. The Mail, notably, devotes its whole front page to a splash about the 'wheels coming off' Boris' Mayoralty. Completely OTT. For the second time in a week we also have a newspaper worrying about the depth of the Cameron project. Earlier in the week it was The

Minimum Income Guarantee

Gravatar Whilst we're on the subject of social justice, this week the Joseph Rowntree Foundation published a report on what 'ordinary people' think should be the minimum income standard. I've published a post previously suggesting that there should be a Citizen's Income. Interestingly, the minimum income line drawn up by the groups is significantly higher than the official poverty line of 60 per cent of the median income.addthis_pub = 'regnodelfines';

The end of print?

Gravatar Steve Rubel has just posted a fascinating piece on digital media and the economic downturn. If he is right, sites like Politics Home will play their part in changing our habits. After all, why buy a newspaper when you can read what all the papers are saying in one place? And you will probably be able to read it when you are on the move on your 3G phone. Except that if newspapers do decline they will no longer be providing the content for aggregator sites. And there's the rub.

Politics versus family - family wins

Gravatar With the recent news that Nicol Stephen is stepping down as Scottish LibDem leader to spend more time with his family, it is a remarkable coincidence that Norman Fowler, modern (indirect) originator of the phrase 'standing down to spend more time with my family', reflects on his own decision in today's Guardian Family section. Having curtailed (albeit unsuccessfully sometimes) my own hobbyist

Is Boris a libertarian?

Gravatar Mick Fealty, an excellent writer who blogs on various sites, has asked on Brassneck, 'The real Boris Johnson: is there any such thing as a Libertarian politician?' For anyone who doesn't know, within days of being elected Mayor, Johnson banned alcohol on the underground. He also appointed Ray Lewis as Deputy Mayor. Lewis has being having a few problems of late related to his past and his cv. The reason he was appointed to Johnson's administration was that he ran a school that emphasised discipline. In his post, Mick cites the alcholol ban as evidence that once elected it is ...

Useful websites

Gravatar I have recently come across three useful political websites. Others might know about them and been using them for a while but for anyone who doesn't here they are: The First Post - it describes itself as an online daily free news magazine. For those interested in UK political gossip it has the Mole. Electoral calculus - this site tracks the opinion polls and predicts who will win elections and by what margin. It is currently predicting a Conservative majority of 162 steas. I checked out where I live, Islington South, and it predicts a Lib Dem win by 2.86%. ...

Education Booms and Social Justice

Gravatar Polly Toynbee's article in this Saturday's Guardian, 'The education boom has proved a curse for the poor', makes a large number of claims, only one of which I really want to address. Firstly Toynbee argues that welfare provision and public attitudes towards the poor in the UK remain miserly. Secondly she seems to dismiss the link between education and social mobility. Third she argues that rather than pursuing education and social mobility, we should simply aim for a fairer, more equal society. To begin, I would like to say that I largely agree with her on her third point. We ...

Sympathy for Boris?........................................nah!

Gravatar Updated It seems hard to believe, but yesterday I swallowed two bits of Conservative spin, hook, line and sinker. The Tory spin was delivered by one Boris Johnson about Ray Lewis: These allegations did not stop him from becoming a JP. They did not stop him from becoming an outstanding and respected prison governor. It turns out that Ray Lewis is not and never has been a Justice of the Peace.

Such sloppy sub-editing does this venerable newspaper no credit. And

Silverstone: who should I be supporting?

Gravatar By complete happenstance yesterday, I have a surprise Santander sponsor's ticket for tomorrow's British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Apart from once or twice being dragged through the cold countryside when I was seven years old to watch the RAC rally stages in North Yorkshire I've never been to such an event so I thought I should probably try it once. {Keikki Kovalainen at Canada GP 2008} I do support motorsport in general as I do believe it is the way the industry creates more efficient vehicles and technologies that eventually feed through into production cars and I do watch all ...

Instead of spending my Saturday evening at home watching Dr Who, having a long bath and writing the occasional Focus newsletter, I am heading to London two days early to go to a Dolly Parton concert at the Dome. I do not count myself as a fan of Dolly but Richard decided to book a couple of tickets and then asked if I wanted to go. So I thought I would give it a

Sorry, I'm not going to gloat about the Ray Lewis saga

Gravatar I've known about the work Ray Lewis has been doing with the most difficult and challenging young black men in London, for a number of years. Young men who have no future left in any mainstream school, or college, and for whom the only career path is usually a life on the streets, gangs, crime, drugs, and violence. Lewis didn't just talk about doing something about these kids, he actually made it happen. A previous colleague of mine from the Ethnic Minority Liberal Democrats, worked with him, and supported his work at Eastside Young Leaders Academy in East London. She ...

Dwain Chambers and the Higher Goals of Sport

Gravatar One of my students asked me whether or not it was acceptable that Dwain Chambers had been banned for life from the Olympics and stripped of the medals he had won since 2002, as he had just taken his case to the high court. Unfortunately it has taken me a while to (a) find out who on earth Dwain Chambers is and (b) come up with anything resembling an answer. I think the complexity of this case comes down to the issue of fairness in competitive social practices. On a very simple level we might be tempted to say that ...

The inevitable consequence of inexperience

Gravatar Well, Boris Johnson may be, as Neil says, in danger of underming his own narrative but it seems that he's well on the way to delivering on the narrative that I set out for him before he was elected. Which is, for those of you that need reminding, that someone without the experience of running a large organisation or mananging a budget or a team of people will not have the experience to know whether they have chosen the right people to shore up that lack of experience. So 'having good people around him' will never make up for the ...

The Lib Dem stars come out for CentreForum

Gravatar A thoroughly enjoyable time was to be had by all in glorious June sunshine on Monday (30th) in the College Garden of Westminster Abbey. The wine was of high quality and the speeches short. Paul Marshall hosted and Nick Clegg made his usual speech, though he was able to transpose the stats about inequalities to Glasgow East. Amongst the Public Relations bods and thinktankers from across the political spectrum there was a strong attendance from the Lib Dem 'A list'. Just for fun I thought I would score the attendant great and good by two factors - star quality and ...

Ray Lewis shows the weakness of the Mayoral system

Gravatar Tony Travers from the LSE was on the Today programme this morning saying that Boris Johnson's problems with his advisers and deputies is in part caused by the Mayoral system. He had to put together a new administration almost overnight, so it is not such a surprise that he has had problems. Things would have been very different on a conventionally run council. The new group leader would have appointed his committee chairs from a pool of experienced councillors who had already won a couple of elections in their wards or boroughs. And in the days of the old GLC, ...

Apparently I am an 'Uncle Tom hating Leftist' - According to Iain Dale

Gravatar Ray Lewis, the man the Tories lauded a few weeks ago as an example to everyone, and someone chosen by the Tory hierarchy to be s sign of the new Tory party, and be deputy Mayor of London, has been caught out, big time. Everyone knows this, the virtual silence on the issue by Tory bloggers says it all. Except, that is, if you are Iain Dale. Where London meets the shires and Tories don't think

Gravatar To Epping Forest last night for a pizza and politics event with the Local Party, hosted by fellow blogger, Neil Woolacott. My first surprise was that there actually is a forest, run by the Corporation of London, and quite extensive it is too. It was a nice evening, and I got to meet with a number of the key activists in an area which is something of a Conservative heartland - lose the Parliamentary seat and there would be a virtual wipeout nationally. I spoke about the House of Lords, part of my continuing campaign to raise the profile of ...

Adrian Sanders: Sound on badgers

Gravatar I have been known to complain about Lib Dem MPs who seek to gain the votes of farmers by supporting the idea to a cull of badgers. Step forward, for instance, Tim Farron and Nick Clegg. So congratulations to Adrian Sanders, who is quoted in Torquay's Herald Express as saying: 'I think they have made the right decision. The idea of culling half the badger population I think is wrong. It's a sledgehammer to crack a nut.'I think we should be tackling the problem of TB within the small number of badgers that have been found to carry it.'Take TB ...

Oh, the irony

Gravatar Paul Walter got there before me, but, in the light of the Ray Lewis affair, which would never have been an issue if Johnson had had him properly checked out before appointing him, there is a certain irony about Boris Johnson using his overpaid Daily Telegraph column not long before to bemoan the amount of checking that's needed for some jobs. If only his file on Lewis had been 'six inches thick'. That bit's at the end of the column - and apparently it's the reason why we didn't make the European Championships. Deputy mayor quits: what's at stake for Boris Johnson

Gravatar So, Boris Johnson is a deputy mayor down. Ray Lewis has quit under a cloud and this morning's papers are full of phrases like "hammer blow" and "gift to his opponents". Jo keeps reminding me that she predicted long ago that Johnson's lack of managerial competence would be his undoing. There's another reason the mayor should be worried: just three months into his term, Johnson is not embodying his carefully crafted political narrative. In marketing speak, his brand may get contaminated, all over again. During the mayoral campaign, Boris Johnson told people a classic "time for a change" story. He ...

Gravatar David Rowntree, former Blur drummer and 'trainee barrister' is running for the City Council again for Labour in Westminster. He stood last year in the rock solid Marylebone High Street ward and got predictably wiped out. This time however he is standing in Church Street ward, a Labour held ward. Opinion Polls Trend June - Slight Slippage

Gravatar The polls in June show a small reduction in support for the Liberal Democrats in high, low and average numbers. There is a long standing trend of LD support slipping in the couple of months immediately post a set of elections I would propose for a number of reasons: 1. The proportion of 'Undecideds' rise (as a question about 'the next election' is less relevant). Whether we like it or not a higher proportion of LDs slip into 'undecided' out of election periods than do other parties. I'm sure Labour and the Tories would characterise this as the Party being ...

Gravatar As well as spending £100,000 and countless hours staging a referendum that moved us precisely nowhere and yet which still managed to please me, the Council has also this week given me my debut on the Licensing and Safety Panel. This is the group of Councillors who decides whether to grant licenses to taxi drivers (in the main) and whether or not to take them off the naughty ones. Obviously there are loads of applications for licenses every year, and so the panel only gets to see the ones that aren't clear-cut decisions. Most people applying for licenses are perfectly ...

Day 2742: Conservatories Ready For Government... the Resignations have begun!

Gravatar Friday: Keen to show that Conservatories are just as useless, incompetent or even downright naughty as the Labour, Mr Balloon's top elected Tory, BoJo the Clown, has accepted the resignation of one of his claque of SO-CALLED "deputies*". Again. Comparing the scene of Mayor BoJo standing SHOULDER-to-SHOULDER with his "vice-mayor" to announce an inquiry with the LONELY figure of Mr Lewis announcing that he was being thrown to the wolves, er, didn't want to overshadow BoJo's work, it was clear that someone - Mr Balloon? - had ordered this humiliating about-face. Feeling Sorry for Bojo

Gravatar OK, there goes me street cred (if I ever had any, tho I did get asked by our illustrious leader the other day if I worried about such things at my age!).......but I found myself feeling a little sorry for Boris today. This, it has to be said, having previously posted that the best outcome of a Boris win would be that it would probably have the unintended consequence of undermining the notion that the Tories could govern. I suppose my unexpected feelings spring from an appreciation of how being well meaning can sometimes end one up in the soup. ...

Labour in meltdown?

Gravatar It seems that Labour activists in Glasgow are desparate to avoid being picked as the fall guy for the Glasgow East by-election. All the front runners said no when they were telephoned by Gordon Brown over the last few days and even one of those who had reluctantly agreed to be considered seems to have had second thoughts and simply not turned up to the hustings. (Of course, in the Lib Dems the best way to get yourself elected to a position you don't want is to not turn up to the meeting). So yesterday's selection meeting was abandoned and ...

Glasgow East - Labour in chaos

Gravatar Labour has failed to select a candidate in Glasgow East after the favourite, Local councillor George Ryan, pulled out citing family reasons. Another local councillor, Steven Purcell, is expected to take his place. Although Glasgow East is the safest Labour seat in Scotland, with a majority of 13,500, the prospects of anything other than a smooth victory must surely be unnerving Downing Street after losing Crewe and Nantwich and the fifth place humiliation of Henley. Could Glasgow East turn against Labour and deepen the crisis of Gordon Brown's leadership?? {Digg!}

A major funding gap

Gravatar One of the biggest weaknesses of the One Wales Government is the way that it is neglecting education. Not only is the Foundation Phase underfunded so that schools are unable to deliver the 1 to 8 teacher pupil ratio required for the under eights, but the local government settlement was so inadequate that core funding for schools is being eroded once again. Many more schools than before will be setting deficit budgets this year. At Higher Education level a funding gap between Wales and England of £61 million remains unaddressed and continues to grow despite a personal commitment from the ...

Hooray - they've won.

Gravatar The residents in Netherley campaigning against the plans for a dump (HWRC) on Holt Lane have won their fight! It's been one of those long sagas with a lot of twists and turns. Basically, the Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority drew up a plan to use lane at Holt Lane for the dump. Holt Lane is quite narrow and has an industrial estate on one part. A lack of transparency

Gravatar Attempts by the Western Mail to get more information from the Commons' authorities on how much MPs have spent on equiping their second homes have hit a brick wall. This is precisely the same brick wall as I have hit recently in seeking details of taxpayers money spent by MPs in my region on communicating with their constituents. Rules in Westminster are much more lax than those that apply in the Assembly. An AM can not use Assembly resources to send out unsolicited mail unless it is to advertise surgeries. For MPs it appears that there are few such restrictions ...

The individual is none other than God. (Sri Sankaracharya). I knew intellectually that Hinduism contains philosophical strands that teach this, but coming on that quote yesterday, the closeness of this to what I have come to believe through studying and reflecting on Christian metaphysics struck me with such emotional force that it seemed uncanny.
