Julia Goldsworthy on the pull - not a sight you see every day...

Gravatar It was another of those invitations that you tend not to refuse, a charity evening for the Macmillan Cancer Care charity, held in the Abbey Gardens at Westminster. Naturally, a number of Parliamentarians were there, taking the opportunity to enjoy some fine hospitality, although it wasn't just about the wine and canapes. No, we were there for serious business. Every year, there is a tug of war

Gravatar Bit frustrated. Put questions into council although they came a way down the pecking order so no chance to ask supplementaries. they were on child protection with a second set on domestic violence. Reason for these.... I am troubled by the news coming out of some parts of the UK where we are seemingly having a repeat of the Climbie situation. no child should have to tolerate this. as a society w e need to look after the most vulnerable. Localism: it's all Balls to Labour

Gravatar It's hard to believe, but Ed Balls was once credited with being a champion of 'new localism' within this Labour Government. This was what Mr Balls said back in 2002, before he was elected an MP, and was Gordon Brown's right-hand at the Treasury: In today's complex world, it is simply not possible to run economic [...]

The Good, The Bad & The Boring

Gravatar Monday brought some good news following on from the Wastes Management review carried out earlier this year. Don't let the good guys be the fall guys

Gravatar That was the theme of last week's column for the Ham & High: I am sick of the good guys being the fall guys. Let me elucidate. At its most simple it's that honest, good citizens (the good guys) who transgress, for let's say, staying on a parking meter or pay and display a few minutes over time get a ticket - and pay it. The bad guys - who perhaps don't bother to find a meter and park illegally and get a ticket or are involved in a traffic incident or so on - by contrast frequently don't pay. ...

In praise of videos

Gravatar Recently, I started a video collection. Owing to my current drive to Buy Lots of Self-indulgent Crap, I frequent the charity shops of Haringey quite a lot, and on my first video purchase venture I secured Fight Club, Abigail's Party, Midnight Cowboy and Alfie, three of which I had never seen, for the princely sum of £4. What's in a number - Why 42 ?

Gravatar Paul Walter muses brilliantly on the reasons why Gordon brown settles on the number 42 for the number of days detention he wants. Personally I think it is because Gordon Brown loves the 1980's legends Level 42. I'm not sure what his favourite single is. I suspect it's their 1983 hit 'The Chinese Way'. After all, the Chinese like to keep people locked up without trial too. Although, I suspect give the latest poll ratings Gordon's favourite single will be the 1987 single 'It's Over'.

Gravatar Earlier today the Government announced that four schools in Haringey face closure. Here's what my press release said:Lynne Featherstone, commenting on the Government's announcement that four schools in Haringey have been given a warning notices to improve exam performance or face closure said: "We must challenge underperformance in our schools but threat of closure and job losses is hardly going to motivate the teachers whose help we need to drive up standards. "I have long fought for fair funding for our local schools, so the extra money is welcome. However, this announcement seems far too much stick and not enough ...

Poll shows Clinton as much a burden as a blessing

Gravatar Real Clear Politics details an interesting Associated Press-Yahoo poll which shows that the argument that if Barack Obama picks Hillary Clinton as his running mate it could damage his chances of beating John McCain is a valid one. It showed 32% of independent respondents expressing a 'strong dislike' of Clinton. Unsurprisingly she is deeply unpopular with Republicans; something that could help solidify them behind a candidate their relationship is at best ambivalent with., 67% have a 'strongly unfavourable view of Clinton. However, this is 24% more than say the same about Obama which raises the possibility that without hatred of ...

Hoe much congestion and traffic problems are caused by public transport and bikes ?

Gravatar I am fairly lucky in the mornings with the short journey I have to take. I travel five miles with virtually no deviation or turn offs until I reach my school. I travel along an A road, and there are no roundabouts to overcome. However, every day, on my way to school and my way home, I suffer along with scores of other drivers, from sitting in traffic queues caused by buses and bikes. Along the length of the A road I drive there are bus stops every few hundred metres, however, there are only about three of these bus ...

Poverty In The UK

Gravatar Today's revelation that in the past year 3,000 more pensioners and 1,000 more children have fallen below the poverty line shows how badly Labour are letting down the people that they promised to support. Mind you, this is the party that gave pensioners an extra 75p per week a few years back, and last year suspended the winter fuel allowance, For a minister to describe the figures as disappointing, as one did on Radio 4 today, is the understatement of the year. These aren't disappointing, they're appalling. They are a national disgrace. Labours promise to halve child poverty by 2010 ...

Perhaps trading standards should be advised ? Upon arrival, she says the start were not exactly happy to see five people with toddlers turn up. Gravatar My experience of betting on politics so far has been mixed. Sometimes, I've lost a little bit of money. On one or two occasions, I've lost a hundred quid or two. Very rarely have I won. My problem's been betting on elections which I'm committed to and where the emotional power of the campaign has been much more influential in my decisions than any inside knowledge I actually had... Gravatar Amnesty Internationals Director Kate Allen has written to Labour backbenchers urging them not to cave-in to government pressure to support plans to extend the detention without charge limit to 42 days. She described the vote tomorrow as a 'watershed moment for human rights in the UK'. She writes; 'I urge you to stand in support of principles that lie at the heart of our society, principles such as justice and liberty. "second time lucky?" - campbell asks government for second time about leven railway intentions

Gravatar {Ming Campbell} Sir Menzies Campbell has asked the Scottish Government for a second time for their views on the re-introduction of a passenger railway line after the Minister failed to respond to Sir Menzies' earlier inquiry. Sir Menzies, who has been campaigning for the re-introduction of the passenger rail link for the Levenmouth area, had written to the Minister for Transport Stewart Stevenson back in April asking what plans, if any, the Government had for the railway's re-introduction. The reply that was received recently came from the Chief Executive of Transport Scotland, which noted the current position with the SEStran ...

The S104 tomato soup experiment

Gravatar S104 has an experiment asking us to measure the amount of fungus in the air using a sealed container of tomato soup. This is not for the faint hearted. The sheep can read, and are disappointed. I had an irregular container. I measured its volume by filling it with water and pouring it into a measuring jug. I did the same with the tomato soup can and subtracted the one from the other to find the volume of air. Out of curiosity I weighed the full measuring jug (capacity 500ml). It weighed 490 grams, so either the scales are out, ...

Beauty contest

Gravatar David Cornock draws our attention to this piece in today's Daily Telegraph: After the candidacy of Miss Great Britain, Gemma Garrett, in Crewe and Nantwich, there'll be a double dose of glamour at the Henley by-election. The new Miss Great Britain Party is taking the bizarre step of fielding two beauty queens as rival candidates: a blonde, Amanda Harrington, and a brunette, Louise Cole. Does anyone know exactly Jon was doing for the party?

Where does the EU go from here?

Gravatar Europe is a poisonous issue in British politics. The debate touches some of the most visceral points in the British body politic. In the end the debate about British membership of the European Union is, at its most basic level, a debate about identity. Those who are most opposed to the EU regard it as a threat to the very idea of Britain and to British identity. Those most in favour sometimes support the EU for precisely the same reasons. The debate is conducted through megaphones, with both sides predicting apocalypse should the other side prevail. The debate has been ...

Why Boris won and what it means for the left

Gravatar Interesting article from OpenDemocracy (hat-tip: {[info]} thehornedgod). I haven't properly digested it yet, but I think the comment that Ken made the mistake of presenting himself to voters as a safe pair of managerial hands rather than as a campaigner for their collective empowerment is spot-on, and is probably at the root of my own rather less articulate feeling that he had 'run out of steam', as I said to {[info]} djm4 and {[info]} aegidian during the campaign. Shocking news on poverty....more news Gordon Brown wants to bury?

And the first increase in pensioner poverty since 1998, an additional 300,000 bringing the total to 2.5 million. Kate Green from the Child Poverty Action Group is calling for a further £3 billion to be spent on tax credits and benefits.
