Leyla Zana at SOAS

Gravatar The Turkish-Kurdish activst and former MP, Leyla Zana, received a heroine's welcome at the Khalili Lecture Theatre at London University's School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) this evening, in recognition of her brave struggle for Kurdish cutural and political rights. Boris writes to me

Gravatar Found a letter on my return from the new Indiana Jones movie (see below), which turns out to be from the new Mayor of London, Boris Johnson. He writes: Dear Meral (no really!) I was truly honoured when Londoners elected me in as their Mayor on 1 May. It is a great priviledge to lead this city and I look forward to realising my vision for London over the coming months and years. I have already started to appoint some of the people who will work in my administration, so that we can get cracking on our plans to improve ...

Indiana Jones Rocks

Gravatar Taking a break from politics, work and stuff, I went to see the latest Indiana Jones movie at the Islington Vue. Harrison Ford does NOT look too old as all the commentators and critics have gone on and on about, goodness he's the same age as Ming was when he stood down last year after all the endless comments and vicious cartoons about his age- there I go again, slipping back into politics.... So there is Indy, running impossible miles, striding through jungles, brushing aside ancient skeletons, and crashing though numerous rapids in the Amazon that a man half his ...

Gravatar "NORTH East Lincolnshire's Care Trust Plus is leading the way across the country." Those were the words of praise from Norman Lamb MP, Liberal Democrat shadow health secretary, who visited Grimsby and Cleethorpes yesterday. Mr Lamb requested a visit to the region after hearing about the success of the Care Trust Plus (CTP) in integrating health and social care. He said: "What is happening in the area is very exciting, I will be taking the lessons I have learnt during my visit and be encouraging Government to learn from them." on Conservative opportunism

Gravatar Conservative MP, Grant Shapps has just admitted on Newsnight, the Tory party is about opportunism (link will only work until the next edition). Click ahead to 28minutes and 15seconds. He said,That's exactly the sober point that David Cameron was making which is that, we won this and we won it big. But actually, what we need to do is get on to showing that we have the program for Britain in two years time, and that's a program of opportunism. As Thatcher would put it,Yes, it came out. The hon. House Points: Education and The Wind in the Willows

Gravatar My House Points column from Today's Liberal Democrat News. Good edukation There was a telling moment at children, schools and families questions on Monday. Jim Cunningham, the Labour MP for Coventry South, asked what steps the Government has recently taken to raise standards in schools. The minister, Jim Knight, replied with a dizzying list of government initiatives: personalised learning, progression, Every Child a Reader, Every Child a Writer, Every Child Counts, tutors, curriculum changes, academies, new 14 to 19 diplomas, raising the participation age, workforce reforms, continued investment and much else besides. There was so much detail and it was ...

Gravatar Nudge is a book that looks at how government can help people make better decisions without taking all control away from them. It is discussed on the art of the possible blog. The art of the possible is a very interesting project and worth a look. The site brings "together liberal and libertarian writers who agree on certain politically and morally enlightened essentials. Their discussions here serve to delineate the reasons why basic human rights must always be defended. Their disagreements, by contrast, will illustrate why forming new alliances is hard, and perhaps serve as a reminder as to why ...

StoryBoard - everyone's got a story

Gravatar I have recently discovered StoryBoard. The site is run by Robin Reed and Eric Winick. I met Eric in Edinburgh when he was directing a play at the Festival a good few years ago. So, I must declare an interest. We are friends and I have always admired his directing work and the plays he has written. During those years, Eric has become more and more interested in storytelling. StoryBoard is the result. The site has a range of stories told by people about incidents in their lives. It is a glorious celebration of the mundane, profound, romantic and quirky. ...

The global game

Gravatar The Economist carries an interesting piece celebrating the recent success of British teams in the Champions League. Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United have all reached at least one Champions League final in the past four years. If you add in Rangers making the UEFA Cup final this year then that is an impressive record. However, as the article rightly notes that is not due to the success of home grown talent - something attested to by the fact that none of the Home Nations will be present at the European Championships this summer. The article lambasts the comments of ...

Crewe and the Future

Gravatar I've held off talking about the election results so far. So here goes... The Tories are back in business, no doubt about it. This is prompting a lot of Lib Dems to wave their arms around and wail things along the lines of "ZOMG OH NOES". Some of these people really dislike Tories and can't stomach the idea of a Conservative government. Others assume that a Conservative revival will inevitably mean we will get squeezed out of the picture. Both are wrong. Many Lib Dems have an atavistic hatred of Conservatives. In the circumstances this is probably quite helpful. A ...

Gravatar OK, I'm over Crewe and Nantwich. Lets get on with Henley. The latest news from the website is that the Henley by-election will most likely be called for 26 June or 3 July, which makes it only 4 or 5 weeks away. As you will see from the illustration above we start from second place in this by-election, whereas we started from third place in Crewe. FHOC Update - Lib Dems official oppostion

Gravatar Well I promised the occasional update from the Facebook House of Commons so here it is. The Liberal Democrats have been made the official opposition and Nikki Thomson, the leader of the Liberal Democrat group is now the official leader of the opposition. The Commons itself now has 383 members with 115 of them are Liberal Democrats. Suspiciously the Conservatives seem to be almost entirely absent or inactive. There were congratulations for John Warman (Cimla) and Keith Davies (Coedffranc North), who retained their seats, and for new councillors Des Sparkes (Cimla) and Frank Little (Cadoxton). For once I agree with David Cameron

Gravatar For once I agree with David Cameron who summarised the result of the Crewe and Nantwich by-election as being the end of New Labour. We can only hope he is right. For me, New Labour was always the very last thing this country needed. We had one very successful Conservative Party and the last thing we needed was a second one. New Labour in many ways was all about the Emperor's new clothes. Seemingly shiny, new, different, but was actually very very conservative, very "safe", indeed very much about centralising. Ahh, I hear Torie's cry, that's not what we're about, ...

Gravatar As you might well expect the Labour Home site is not exactly in celebratory mood today. Let's pay a visit to the house of wounded feeling. Mike Ion is the lucky person who gets to answer the question 'Where do we go from here?' He feels that the "the real challenge to the continuation of the pursuit of a progressive political agenda" is not a "a resurgent Tory party" but "defeatists, pessimists and cynics that exist within the Labour party itself." A Henley Strategy

Gravatar What has been bothering me this morning (as I tried to focus on statistics, and failed) is the following question: If the Tory victory in Crewe & Nantwich was about voting for the default "NotLabour" option, then we could have won it if we were in second, right? But that logic depends on it being Labour who are in first. So what do we do in Henley, where, by all appearances, voters are quite

From depression, hope emerges

Gravatar Having been in despair about the Tories apparent march back to power, this article by James Graham - http://tinyurl.com/67llkd [I still can't do hyperlinks I'm afraid...] - gives me more confidence. He makes two excellent points. First, there is all to play for in Henley and the Tories are going to have to give it everything to hold on to the Blond Bombshell's seat. Second, and perhaps most significant, is the fact that the Tories remain a largely mindless, divided bunch with about as much to unite them as a room full of Frenchmen discussing cheese. Jesus christ and his apostles! the tories are back!

Gravatar Seeing a Tory win a by-election is somewhat akin to drinking from a cup of slurry. It leaves a very nasty taste in your mouth and promises worse to come, as the animal waste works its way through your system. A long night perched on the edge of the toilet bowl of destiny looms. Perhaps the old New Labour joke can be revisited: How many Tories does it take to change a lightbulb. Answer: the Tories won't change anything.

The Lib Dems’ death is being predicted once again

Gravatar If you believe most of the people commenting in response to my CiF article this morning, and Bob Piper, you would think the Lib Dems were about to shuffle off this mortal coil. I seem to remember a remarkably similar bunch of people assure me of this at this point in the Parliamentary cycle every time over the last 13 years. C&N - Not so much a disaster, more a wake up call

Gravatar Last night's result, though disappointing, was quite predictable. With a resurgent Cameron, the Tories with their tails up, Labour rapidly falling into the hole of their own making, us in a poor third place, we were in for a classic squeeze. So why did the party insist on continuing to "big it up"? OK, don't be despondent but be measured. We held an unscheduled debate on the attacks in Italy against immigrants, mainly but not exclusively from the Roma (gypsy) community. Annual Report

Gravatar The Western Mail's Chief Reporter, Martin Shipton has published his verdict on the first year of Wales' Labour Plaid Cymru Coalition Government. It is a fair and interesting analysis: Much of the One Wales agreement, in fact, seems deliberately vague when it comes to specific, practical commitments. A typical phrase is “working towards”: “working towards reforming NHS Trusts”; “working towards eliminating the use of private sector hospitals [by the NHS] by 2011”, a commitment that some would see as mere ideological posturing, with the get-out that a failure to achieve the aspiration does not represent a broken promise. Gravatar For the second time this month, I've stayed awake until the bitter end of the election night results, watching Labour lose to the Tories. Many hope (and plenty fear) that this is the beginning of a pattern of loss for Labour that will culminate in a thundering landslide at the next General Election.
