Gravatar I try to keep my finger on the pulse of cultural as well as political developments in the European Union, in so far as my writing, lecturing and political duties allow, though that is getting increasingly difficult as the EU expands. Persistence pays off

Gravatar Some good news at last about the winter heating allowance - I've finally found that the £100 owing is going to be paid into my constituents bank account this week. Only 5 months of persistence! At least I got there, he is still waiting to hear back from his MP who he wrote to in December. Whatever attributes a Councillor needs - dogged determination is high on the list! Plenty more issues to...

The Newspaper that cried "Wolf"

Gravatar The Telegraph is reporting that Nick Clegg came under fire in Afghanistan. Yet 24 hours earlier they reported the completely made up story that Nick Clegg would support a minority Tory government. This Telegraph story has been denied by Nick Clegg's team and consisted of quotes like "The Telegraph has learned " and "sources say", but with no direct quotes from anyone. Most people are under the impression that the "Torygraph" was living up to its name and printed the story as a favour to their Tory friends in order to help the Conservatives squeeze the Lib Dem vote in ...

Behind the Cheeky Girls

Gravatar From the Spin Doctor column in yesterday's Wales on Sunday: GOSH! Have we really got this far into the column without a mention of Lembit Opik, Montgomeryshire MP and fiance of one-half of a chart-averse novelty pop act? Well, fear not, because TV viewers are about to get a glimpse into the couple's domestic arrangements: the pair have signed up for a fly-on-the-wall documentary, Living with. . . the Cheeky Girls. The show, say digital channel Living, "will see them followed by cameras in their homes and private lives". No doubt this will see Lembit making a guest appearance or ...

Is Nick doing a secret deal with the Tories?

Gravatar "Nick Clegg will back Tories in hung parliament." You might not think this is a highly controversial sentence to write in a Tory newspaper...but according to various Lib Dem members on Lib Dem Blogs and Lib Dem Voice, it's time to panic. There is a lot we don't know about the political future, but it doesn't take someone with an MA in politics to tell you the Tories have risen from the subs bench and are back in play. It also doesn't take much to work out that it would raise our profile if we flirted outrageously with the party ...

Gravatar Richard Webster's new blog kicks off with a discussion of media reactions to the revelation that the so-called fragments of a child's body the discovery of which propelled the Jersey child abuse enquiry onto the front pages has been revealed by carbon-dating experts to be not a piece of bone at all. Webster has written extensively about miscarriages of justice against care workers, most notably in his book The Secret of Bryn Estyn and his own investigation had led to this latest revelation about Haut de la Garenne. He is also interviewed by Brendan O'Neill in Spiked magazine. It seems ...

Welcomed with open arms??

Gravatar My thoughts on the coalition conundrum are below but I thought it quite relevant to venture to Conservative Home and see how the 'other side' saw us: Some were supportive... "Clegg is most definitely on the right of his party, and though that still makes him somewhat to the left of Dave's Tories, he's still much more in line with the historic Liberal tradition that we're quite familiar with. The two parties arguably have a lot more in common on their good sides than either would like to admit..." ....said Nizhinsky. However, several posters simply felt that the offer of ...

Boris Johnson: The good and the bad

Gravatar Paul Walter of Liberal Burblings has a couple of postings on the new Mayor of London. The first concerns Boris Johnson's call for new legislation preventing the Mayor of London from serving more than two terms. This seems to me entirely sensible. In a perfect world all local councillors would be limited to two terms. When you are elected you fully intend to represent the people in the council chamber. Unless you are very careful, after a few years you find yourself representing the council officers in your ward. The trouble that all parties have finding council candidates means that ...

Anyone who thinks that Eurovision is not ruined by block voting is living in La La Land

Gravatar When I wrote last year about Eurovision being ruined by the result being predetermined in advance by countries employing block voting tactics should read THIS on the BBC website. The report says that if you remove the in built bias of countries voting for other countries that speak the same language, there is clear statistical evidence to prove that some countries will always stand a greater chance of winning because they are part of a voting block. Time for the BBC to pull the plug on Eurovision. The fact that it is an extravaganza of camp-ness is not an excuse ...

Tea with Lord Bonkers

Gravatar The Daily Telegraph's Mandrake was intrigued by this: The Lib Dems have hit upon a novel way of getting party members to head for Crewe and Nantwich to campaign for Thursday's by-election: they're offering them the chance to have "a cuppa" with one of their big guns. Each day until polling day, a name will be drawn from those who have signed in at the local campaign and the lucky winner will take tea with a Lib Dem "name" such as Simon Hughes, Vince Cable, and, on polling day, the party leader Nick Clegg himself. As ever, Lord Bonkers was there first. ...

Tabloid biased journalism at its worst - Sky News

Gravatar People often use Sky News as a reason why we should not have a BBC News Channel. Today's headlines tell me exactly why we DO need an alternative to Sky. How should we approach a hung-Parliament?

Gravatar There is little doubt that the story in this mornings Daily Telegraph saying that Nick Clegg would help the Conservative Party form a minority administration if it were the largest single party is mischief making ahead of the important by-election in Crewe and Nantwich. It's subtext is obvious; why bother voting Liberal Democrat, you will end up with a Conservative government in any case. On that level we should be immediately weary of it and on one important level dismiss it as the idle speculation it is; however, it does raise important questions so it is worth addressing just on ...

Italy under Berlusconi

Gravatar The rubbish crisis has worsened in Naples, with angry residents setting the rubbish alight. The Mafia are deeply involved in the crisis. Belusconi may be able to solve it with an iron fist perhaps. Also residents in Naples burned homes of Roma (gypsies). Berlusconi's right-winged Interior Minister has had to deal with it. Italien police forces have been focusing raids on the Roma community. Perhaps they should deal with the real trouble makers- the Mafia. However Berlusconi's Government would much rather use immigrants and minorities as a scapegoat. The EU and the Catholic Church has been keeping an eye on ...

Abbas criticises Bush's Israeli bias.

Gravatar President Abbas of the Palestian territories, has criticised Bush over his bias towards Israel. "What the president said at the Knesset made us angry, and to be honest, we don't accept it," It was following a speech by Bush to the Israeli Parliament. Bush's bias is pretty disgusting. In the Israeli-Hezbollah war, the UK and US dragged their heals to stop the UN making a quick peace deal (which ended up quite simple). Simply because they wanted to see Israel kick Hezbollah's arse. (However that's not really to do with Palestine) The US has been quite happily allowing Israel to ...

Plot to assissinate Tsvangirai

Gravatar Morgan Tsvangirai postponed his return to Zimbabwe because of fears of security. The MDC are claiming that the army has 18 snippers ready to shoot Tsvangirai. He fled Zimbabwe after the first round due to safety fears. But it could well be true. If Tsvangirai was shot, the only person who can be elected in the second round if Mugabe. Bizarre timing of Boris' call for London Mayor term limits

Gravatar There is a strong case for term limits, but it seems very strange for Boris Johnson, newly elected Mayor of London, to be advocating it for his own position at this time. Blow to Scottish separatist lobby as Al Fayed backs independence

Think Tank Reform Blasts 'Reactionary' Tories for 'Lesbians Need a Good Strong Man to Fix Their Cupboards and Stuff' Policy

Gravatar Think tank Reform have awarded their 'Reactionary of the Week' prize to the entire Conservative Party. The award was earned "for declaring that lesbian couples should be prevented from having IVF treatment unless they agree that a 'male role model' would be involved in the upbringing of their child", a policy most justifiably derided, mocked and attacked on our liberal blogs last week. Reform, which lobbies for a very liberal reduction in monolithic, centralised government, is too often dismissed as Tory-leaning. The above combined with how they granted the 'Reformer of the Week' prize, albeit cautiously, to Gordon Brown, demonstrates ...

I find it amazing that even in the recent aftermath of the overdue legislation obligating drugs manufacturers to declare of knowledge of side-effects of their drugs, GlaxoSmithKlein's new Chief Executive could even dare not to answer whether GlaxoSmithKline under Garnier would repeat the reprehensible conduct it displayed over Seroxat and not release such information until the failures of the drug were played out in patients unnecessarily abrupt lives. Gravatar David Cameron gave the biggest hint today that a Conservative government would be a Conservative government. Amazing us with new levels of being vacuous, he has today announced that a Conservative government would seek to reduce the level of taxation, by ensuring Britain spends within its means. Fair enough, that's a prudent step to take, however, as we are becoming increasingly aware "this will be at some point in the future". Such a non-promise. Gravatar In politics, as in love and war, most things are generally considered to be "all fair". Over the years political campaigns, based on increasingly sophisticated information systems, have become ever more targeted on the swing voters in the swing constituencies. As in the US, this has made a small number of swing voters exceptionally valuable. The result is large amounts of money are being focused by all the parties on their target areas. During the 2005 general election it became very clear that the Conservatives had developed exceptionally sophisticated information systems that could generate probabilities of voting Conservative based on ...
