Selected to stand for the Liberal Democrats in Borehamwood
Tonight, the Hertsmere Liberal Democrats selected me as their candidate for Cowley Hill Ward in Borehamwood for the May 2008 Hertsmere Borough Council elections. The ward is historically solid Labour, but the party have been in serious decline in recent years - going from running the Council in the late ’90s down to third place [...]

Greg Mulholland: Save local pubs
The Lib Dem MP for Leeds North West is quoted in the Bradford Telegraph & Argus regretting the closure of community pubs and talking good sense: "People, including Government Ministers, keep saying we need to move to some kind of continental cafe culture in this country when what we really need is to support traditional pub culture. "Real community pubs, where people meet to socialise with friends and neighbours, provide an environment in which people can and do enjoy alcohol responsibly. "If there was more emphasis on this genuine pub culture in this country, we would not have many of ...

Symantec Customer Service: hello to new readers
A special waggle of the tail to the new readers who have come to this blog via internet searches for "Symantec Customer service", "Symantec Customer service problems blog" and "Symantec Customer server is just quite simply the most wondrous creation on this heavenly planet of ours". Woof! New readers I may have. But decent service from Symantec Customer Service I don't yet. Grrrrrrrrowl. I tried the Symantec Live Chat support service again. The one that promises "Little or no wait time". After 15 minutes wait (I guess a little time on the Chairman Mao - let's not rush to a ...

Today I got a surprise pressie, dropped into my inbox from an unlikely source. No...........it wasn't a belated Valentine............it was a message from James Graham to inform me that along with fellow women bloggers Meral Ece, Alix Mortimer, Charlotte Gore and Lynne Featherstone, I had been nominated for the Gender Balance Best Lib Dem Blog! Now, included in the message was a request for me to add the button to my blog with a link to the Gender Balance Campaign - this I am unable to do, so this is the temporary compromise until I find out what I need ...

Have you been over-charged for Royal Mail stamps
A friend has told me about their experience buying stamps in a newsagent in Crouch End - the newsagent added a mark-up and was selling first class stamps for 40p each.Generally I'd be happy for shops to choose what to charge, but I think stamps are something a little different. In particular, because people expect them to be the same everywhere - and because you don't pick them up off a shelf where you can see the price they are being sold at in that outlet - it's too easy for people to be fooled into paying more without realising ...

A couple of things which piss me off
‘Liberals’ who advocate authoritarian policies. Especially when its ‘for their own good’ or the worst ‘because they’re stupid’. Conservative ‘libertarians’ - just because you don’t like the actions of the state it doesn’t mean that people will choose your preferred situation if they’re free. And there was never some great age of liberalism and freedom. We [...]

Stable Cable's Able
There is no doubt, Northern Rock was a crisis waiting to happen. As was noted in a really great profile of Vince by Michael White in today's Guardian, it is he who has been warning for years of the consequences of overindebtedness. "When Northern Rock went belly up and went to the Bank of England for help in September, Cable immediately urged nationalisation as the course for the Treasury to adopt. Voters may not notice the nuances, though some will remember that puritan Cable had been warning against Britain's growing personal credit card debt for several years. Now Cable's early ...

Talking about Rubbish
This morning I had a mid-review meeting to discuss how we're getting on with the scrutiny of waste management. The results of the questionnaire have been very good - more than 2300 sent back so far, so we're going to be over the level needed to give us the comfort of a valid consultation. The answers are proving really interesting - it seems that people are divided over the questions about

Dancing with Vince Cable
Michael White reinforces The Cult of Cable in this morning's Guardian: Vince remains a Big Story around Westminster and - more surprising - a presence on Facebook and rival sites, where the kids seem to like him. When in December he noted "the prime minister's remarkable transformation in the last few weeks from Stalin to Mr Bean, creating chaos out of order rather than order out of chaos," they laughed. They may not have heard of Mr Brown, but they know all about Mr Bean. It was his best quip since November, when he warned that the government was propping up ...

A car owner for 30 minutes
A resident in my ward recently contacted me about pushing the Council to provide bays for a car sharing scheme. The scheme he mentioned was www.streetcars.co.uk, but I know there are also other groups providing the same service. The idea is simple - a car that members of the group can book out for half an hour, couple of hours, half a day, a day. The Fortis Green resident who contacted me uses these cars, but the nearest one is based in Highgate, which limits its convenience for him. The problem is that these cars of course need a dedicated ...

Why are the polls under reflecting Barack Obama's appeal
All the polls carried out in the last seven days in Wisconsin, scene of barack Obama's latest victory in the Democratic primaries showed, with one exception, a small Obama lead, but in each and every case they undervalued Obama's support. So does this have a messge for what will happen in Texas and Ohio next week The Wisonsim Polls showed, on average, 52% for Obama, and 42% for Clinton, with about 6% undecideds. Yet in the real primary in Wisconsin Obama polled 59% to Clinton's 41%. So the opinion polls under represent Obama by 7% and over rate Clinton by ...

Police appeal for crash witnesses
Police are appealing for witnesses to a fatal collision on the B4465 Wapley Road near Dodington Ash on Friday (February 15), shortly before 8pm. A Fiat was travelling along the B4465 towards the A46 at Tormarton when it collided with a Hyundai travelling in the opposite direction. The driver of the Fiat, a man aged in his 20s, sustained serious injuries and died at the scene. Anyone who witnessed the collision is urged to contact the police collision investigation unit on 0845 4567000. (Thanks to Avon and Somerset Constabulary local website for the details)

Kosovo and International Law
Following Kosovo’s declaration of independence on Sunday, those who refuse to recognise the province’s new status have argued that such a recognition would be a violation of Serbia’s sovereignty. Give them enough Cable...
Vince Cable is all over the Times website at the moment. Their main story is Northern Rock, and the partial nationalisation deal. And Vicne is the man at the centre of the story. Vince Cable, the Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesman, has today written to the Chancellor asking why it appeared that Granite held Northern Rocks best mortgages, saddling the taxpayer with the worst. He likened the arrangement to "asset-stripping". "In simple terms, what seems to have happened is that (Granite's) bond holders, who have the benefit of the best security the bank can offer, are being elevated above the taxpayer," ...

Obama and the women's vote
Early on in these primaries it seemed quite clear cut, Hillary had the women’s vote and because there were enough women, she was winning the race to the Democratic nomination. All the US commentators are now saying that one reason that Barack Obama is pulling ahead from Hillary is that the women’s vote is abandoning her and has gone to vote for Obama. Now, I know women don’t vote as a block etc, etc but there are significant amounts of movement in voter’s demographics to see a trend that aligns women and voting intentions. This new development does ...

Great Expectations in Highgate
Wednesday morning usually means I'm off to Westminster early to attend my Select Committee on Communications. This morning however, I had to miss the planned trip to Google having woken up with a ferocious headache. Some strong painkillers and a couple more hours of sleep and I felt able to meet my promise to deliver blue letters in Highgate. I met up with my friend, and Haringey stalwart, Julia Glenn, and trudged off in the hazy sunshine. Kingsbury, where Mark lives, is homogenous 1930s metroland housing with, frankly, little character. Highgate, where there is a hotly contested by-election, on the ...

Tobias Ellwood - A Tory MP setting a good example
Well done to Tobias Ellwood, a Tory MP who whilst out in his constituency chose not to accept that some teenagers were acting in a anti social way and went to speak to them about their behaviour. Of course, he was met with verbal abuse and was pelted with stones. However, if more people had the nerve to do it and knew the police would be on their side if they did (and not take the easy option of arresting the adult as they do so often when the teens run home to their parents and complain), then there would ...

Parking in Wycombe Marsh is becoming a nightmare! - Cllr Trevor Snaith - Feb 2008
Parking in Wycombe Marsh is becoming a nightmare! {parking marsh} There are serious parking issues in Wycombe Marsh - parking provision must be improved. Lib Dems say YES! Tories say NO! At a recent Development Control Committee meeting the new St James development was approved by the Tory controlled committee. We have just passed Leeds City Council's £506 million budget by 6 votes. I have got bored and slipped away to catch up on some email upstairs in a Civic Hall office. Despite being over 2.5 hours long only a handful of the 99 City Councillors are allowed to speak in the budget debate and all of them front benchers. While this makes it one of the premier events in the political calendar in debating terms it does make you feel like lobby fodder. The chamber began to empty after the vote and a wave of backbenchers began making "in ...

Campbell comments on debt crisis
The typical British family is more than £1300 a year worse off following sharp rises in tax, mortgage and energy bills over the past four years a report by the Centre for Policy Studies has shown. The study says that millions of households are “very exposed” to the expected economic slow-down with the average family burdened with more debt than their annual income as they struggle to pay higher bills. New Labour wants doctors to join the social police
Commenting on Alan Johnsons speech today in which he set out plans to change Britains sick note culture into a well note culture, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary for England, Norman Lamb said: This serious issue deserves a more sophisticated approach, but we should be wary of moving to a system where doctors find themselves policing the benefits system rather than treating the sick. If Alan Johnson is serious about helping the large number of people on long term sick leave back to work, he should focus on providing better access to effective treatment for the huge numbers of people ...

Tory MEP booted out of EPP group in European Parliament
South East England Tory MEP Daniel Hannan has been expelled from the right-of-centre European Peoples Party (EPP) group in the European Parliament after making a speech in which he compared the Parliament's rules to those of Nazi Germany. Back in January Hannan made a speech complaining about the rules enforced by Parliament's president Hans-Gert Poettring which prevented a number of right-wing MEPs from continually disrupting business in the chamber. He said that only his respect for the German Poettring prevented him from comparing moves to curb disruption in the chamber with powers seized by Adolf Hitler in 1933. The spineless ...

Obama and McCain both win two
Yesterday saw both Barack Obama and John McCain win in two contests, Obama in Wisconsin and Hawaii and McCain in Wisconsin and Washington. McCain is now if not mathematically almost certainly assured of the Republican nomination. Obama has now won all ten of the last contests (even better than I predicted).

In a move which, whilst its perfectly legal, promises to make a mockery of the whole primary process, Hillary Clinton’s campaign has declared that it will seek to persuade (aka bribe) pledged delegates from Obama if she doesn’t have enough to win. This completely goes against what most see as the idea of primaries and caucuses [...]

How local democracy works, part 94

I am, however, blessed with some very active and committed parish councillors who want to do things for our community and put a lot of time into doing so. A guest feature by Edmund In Tokyo Right around the time we all started getting mobile phones, people often used to comment that they were losing the ability to remember phone numbers. As we get used to having Google on-demand, people are starting to say that they're using the ability to remember anything. Wisconsin/Hawaii wrap-up
Last night proved another good one for Barack Obama, as he extended his winning streak over Hillary Clinton to 10 with victories in the Hawaii caucus and Wisconsin primary.Hillary Clinton has now failed to win a single state since Super Tuesday, and her campaign now rests on the March 4th states of Ohio and Texas. Both states favour her demographically - but so did Wisconsin, where nearly six-in-ten voters were women; nine in ten were white; forty percent earned $50,000 or less; and 58 percent had no college degree. In each of those categories - key blocs in the Clinton coalition ...

Almost scared to believe Barack can do it
Great news for those of us who think Barack Obama is a strong voice for change in the USA and subsequently the rest of the world. He has won Hawaii, as expected - being born there, with 76% of the vote. The greater excitement is that he also won Wisconsin, beating Clinton by 58% to 41%. According to the BBC he now has 1319 delegates to Hilary's 1245, these being delegates won in elections and not "Superdelegates". It is also cheering that barack has made great inroads in the traditional "lunch pail" working class Democrats and polled equally with Hilary ...

Last October Cadbury announced the closure of its Somerfield factory in Keynsham. At the time it was thought the decision would rip the heart out of the town. But news out this week appears to indicate that not all is lost. Bath & NE Somerset Council are to consider a move whereby all its main council offices would relocate to the town. The Happy Teetotaler
Well I never thought I'd find myself saying this, but I'm becoming a happy teetotaler :) I first tried the no alcohol experiment during Lent last year and it was, quite frankly, one of the most psychologically horrendous experiences of my entire life. Budget Setting
Set the budget for the year ahead last night. A surprisingly entertaining meeting, the bottom line being that we kept the Council Tax increase to 2.5%. There was some controversy and disscussion over a proposed one off grant of £100,000 to the Hall for Cornwall. A Conservative Member objected strongly, saying that if people want to go to the theatre they should pay for it themselves, and not be subsidised. It was demonstrated that the Hall brings a great many people into Truro, bringing many benefits to shops, bars etc. In the end only 3 Councillors voted against the grant. ...

Tories in confusion again
David Cameron's ambition to redress the balance so that the English might enjoy some of the benefits of devolution have hit the rocks after the man tasked with finding a solution for the Tories dismissed the idea of an English-only committee at Westminster. The Western Mail reports that former Chancellor Ken Clarke believes that there is a more straightforward solution. Unfortunately, his plan to allow only English MPs to vote on English-only legislation is not as straightforward as it might seem. Mr. Clarke appears to have missed the fact that just because a clause in a bill purports to only ...
