The Brent Mosques Liberal Tendency

Gravatar Nick Clegg was the guest of honour at a large celebratory dinner for the local MP, Sarah Teather, at the Howard Road Mosque and Islamic Centre in Brent this evening, attracting large numbers of predominantly Pakistani Muslims, as well as the local chief imam and elders, as well as LibDem members. A bank run averted

Gravatar We are grateful to Ken Palmerton, a liberal resident in the Channel Islands, for drawing our attention to a more recent historical parallel to the Northern Rock crisis than the 1866 one usually quoted. In 1914, on the outbreak of war, a Liberal Chancellor of the Exchequer took swift action to prevent what would have been a ruinous run on the banks. For a short period, he effectively nationalised UK banking. From Thomas Johnston's "The Financiers and the Nation": WHEN the whistle blew for the start of the Great War in August 1914 the Bank of England possessed only nine ...

Kennedies for Clinton

Gravatar News is that Kathleen, Bobby and Kerry - children of RFK are backing Hillary. Previously I had said the decider will be Super Tuesday - while emphasising that various claims of momentum out of primaries before then are hogwash. I have to say I was wrong. Super Tuesday will not be a decider, it is all going to run even longer. But it will probably be the first time that either front runner in the

Rearranging the furniture in restaurants

Gravatar In recent months I have been struck by the way that people now rearrange the furniture in restaurants to suit the size of their party. Chairs will be moved and tables put together without anyone asking the waiting staff if they mind. I am sure I remember a time when this did not happen. People used to ask the staff if their party could be accommodated and leave it to them to make the necessary moves. And once upon a time I am sure we would just have put up with things. "Really, I'm quite happy sitting over here by ...

"Gaza:Lift the Blockade" The Relief Convoy on its way

Gravatar I have just received this moving report about the relief convoy yesterday: "The initiative for the large action that took place today (26.1.08) started when the well-know psychiatrist, Dr. Eyad al-Sarraj, the human-rights activist from Gaza, met in the Gush Shalom office with a small group of Israeli peace activists, in order to tell them about the desperate situation in the strip. It was decided on the spot to organize in Israel a relief convoy for the Gaza Strip people, and to fight by all political and juridical means for the right to get it in. It was agreed that ...

Does part closure actually work

Gravatar I have just spent an enjoyable weekend with my friend Louisa and her family and (some of my) friends in Surrey celebrating her 30th birthday. The only thing that spoilt it was our public transport system. On Saturday night there was part closure by South West Trains between Woking and Surbiton. So that meant that rail replacement services were running, but only when enough trains had arrived

What is it about getting older and drinking that doesn't mix

Gravatar I have never been a prolific or heavy drinker in the "binge drinking" sense, although I was always able to hold my alcohol well, indeed a little too well at University which annoyed me as I seemed to have to spend more to get drunk. At university a gentle night out would involve 8 pints of beer (£1 a pint back in 1996) and a heavy night out would mean having half a bottle of Vodka followed by several more pints. Yes, I know, it was not big or clever, but in my early to mid 20's (I was 26 ...

Councillor faces censure

Gravatar West Somerset Today is reporting that a West Quantock council member on West Somerset Council is facing censure by the Standards Board of England after leaking confidential information to the press. Councillor Mitch Wicking reportedly blew the whistle after he discovered the councils former Chief Executive and Finance Chief, Tim Howes and Rod Latham each received bumper pay-offs, totalling £400,000. Speaking afterwards Cllr Wicking said; I hope taking such action will spark a badly needed review of our local authority, its role in our community and its functions as a public service provider. Tooth Review: 1569 & 1570

Gravatar {Prog 1569} {Prog 1570} Covers: 1569 features a rather odd picture of some mutants by Simon Davies, clearly still in his Stone Island phase. 1570 features Gene from Kingdom mid-battle with some giant insects. The latter is clearly the more obviously commercial, but I was surprised to see that 1569 had sold out in a couple of days at my local Borders. It is interesting to note that just a few issues in, the new logo has already had a slight tweak. The big thick bar across the top of the page which I hated has gone transparent. Whether the ...

Kennedies for Obama

Gravatar Breaking news is that Sen. Ted Kennedy is set to endorse Barack Obama for president. He joins his neice, Caroline Kennedy, who endorsed Obama in a New York Times editorial. We'll see how Charles Kennedy reacts. In the meantime, where do the candidates find themselves Well, the answer is that Obama's win in South Carolina is good news. He had to win to stay in, and he won well. By winning approximately 1 in 4 white votes, the networks are also reporting it as a cross-racial coalition that allowed him to win. This makes Bill Clinton's claim that Obama's victory ...

One of the best in the country!

Gravatar Tomorrow (as I do every three months) I will be chairing the Maternity Services Liaison Committee for Cornwall. I am particularly looking forward to this one because the Healthcare Commission has identified Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust as having one of the very best Maternity Services in the UK. It was a nerve racking experience as maternity services in Cornwall have undergone major changes in the 12-18 months. The service that women receive has ...

Paddy pulls out of Afghan role

I was rummaging around in the foliage of Google news at 11.30pm last night and saw a story in the Earth Times (what is that) saying Hamid Karzai, the Afghan PM, had expressed dissatisfaction with the potential appointment of Paddy Ashdwon as UN Envoy to Afghanistan. He was seen as too strong a figure who was potentially a rival for Karzai and "too controversial"...apparently. Paddy

And Ethnic Mutual makes it five police investigations

Gravatar Today's Independent brings news that the fate of money given to Ethnic Mutual is now the subject of a police investigation - bringing to five the number of bodies funded by the GLA / London Development Agency which are being investigated by the police over allegations of financial irregularities. And - once again - the LDA's press operation doesn't seem to be telling us an accurate story: In a statement, an LDA spokesman said: "We referred Ethnic Mutual to the police last year and they are now investigating it." But this was contradicted by the Metropolitan Police yesterday, who said ...

Lord Bonkers' Diary: Winning the support of young voters

Gravatar Sunday It seems that my fears of yesterday were unfounded: Clegg has turned out to be very well connected in the world of popular music. This morning it is announced that he has asked Mr Brian Eno stalwart member of The Roxy Music and heir to the fruit salts fortune to advise him on the nations youth. Aged only 59, Eno is surely the ideal person to play this important role. Are blogs the new think tanks

Gravatar Think tanks have been around for decades. They serve various functions but one, whether intentional or not, is to create an intellectual backdrop for new political movements. The Institute of Economic Affairs and the Centre for Policy Studies helped do that for the Thatcher administration. In the 1980s, the IPPR and Demos did the same for New Labour. Think tanks are still important. Peter Hain's recent desire to set one up seems to say that all Ministers should have won. But I wonder if blogs are slowly replacing the think tank's function as creator of the political zeitgeist. There is ...

I think that days like today, and ceremonies like tomorrow’s here in Bury, are absolutely vital. It’s not just about looking back and remembering the victims of an unimaginable horror. Gravatar According the the FEC, John McCain only has assets valued at $81,000 tops. How involved were Hamas in the Rafah crossing event

Gravatar Right, I'm back. Its been a little quieter than usual round here but I have been painfully busy. I just read the BBC's coverage of Hamas being invited to crisis talks with the Mubarak regime. It included this line: "It is five days since Hamas blew up the Gaza border wall at Rafah and Egyptian guards were forced to stand back."
