Gravatar Brian Paddick led a walkabout along Kensington’s Portobello Road this afternoon, with a party of local activists, the GLA candidate for London West Central, Merlene Toh Emerson, and the three top London Euro-candidates: Sarah Ludford, myself and Dinti Wakefield. It was interesting to see how passionately so many of the market stallholders there feel about [...]

In denial: Labour and Rosemary Emodi

Gravatar I’ve commented before on the at times bizarre group-think mentality that seems to be gripping many in Labour circles over any criticism of Ken Livingstone. Their response is either to say: Hey, you are a left-winger, you treacherous scum, how dare you criticise beloved Ken!, or Hey, you are right-wing scum and part of a nasty conspiracy, [...]

Changing the rules on the monarchy: 25 and counting

Gravatar {Buckingham Palace} Following my taking up the cudgels on behalf of women in the line of succession to the throne - by calling for the current rules which discriminate in favour of men to be axed - I've put down an early day motion (EDM) in Parliament in order to supplement my referral of the matter to the Equalities Commission. EDM number 710 has 25 signatories so far - including MPs from all the main parties. (Apologies to Conservative Brian Coleman, who seems to get terribly excited when I raise this issue - but yes, Brian, supporters include MPs from ...

Too many soundbites from Cameron - Says Ken Clarke

Gravatar Ken Clarke is right to highlight Cameron's obsession with the fluff of sound bites. Every time he speaks it is as if he had five of them to say and he shoe horns them in in an almost corny way. His sad attempt to emulate Vince Cable's Mr Bean line about Gordon Brown by referring to Gordon Brown "turning from Prudence to Del Boy without touching the ground" was enough to make you groan it was so lame. Ken Clarke highlights the fact that there is a mass of the electorate who despite being fed up with labour, are not ...

What chance do public health warnings have

Gravatar When i was at the gym earlier watching MTV on one of the screens a song came on by someone called Mickey Modelle (yes, I am sure that is her real name) which to me showed to futility of government and drinks industry campaigns to ensure a policy of sensible drinking. The whole video appears to centre around drinking lots and lots of alcohol at a bar, and the more you drink the better it gets. Indeed later on in the video there are several acts of wanton vandalism which don't bother anyone as well as a lot of anti ...

Gaza.........Where will you be tomorrow

Gravatar There are times when I find it almost impossible to listen to the news from Gaza. This has been one such week - I find myself feeling so impotent, so easily distracted by other cares, so weak and powerless. I want to shout and scream and jump on the next plane to Ben Gurion - but what would that achieve So, tomorrow, those of us who give a xxxx can at least join others in Whitehall to make our views and our voices heard. Well, this week's theoretical chocolate mouse deserves to go to Richard Gadsden who wrote this remarkably perceptive

What, in the name of holy smoke, is Boris on about

Gravatar I know Legoland. Been there. I know those "whirly teacup things". They're in the photo above. But they are for tiny kids. It is an exaggeration to say that they "subject the human body to the most extraordinary stresses and shears". We're not talking about Oblivion or Nemesis at Alton Towers here. The Free market and direct action

Gravatar People, we have more power than we think. We can engage in direct political action every time we purchase or don't purchase something. If we disagree with a company then don't buy their stuff. If you disagree with battery farming, don't buy that meat. If you want businesses to be more environmentally friendly then support those that are and not those who aren't. Lord Bonkers' Diary: Shane McGowan and Nick Clegg

Gravatar Friday My dinner guest at the Hall this evening is none other than the noted popular musician Mr Shane McGowan. Do you know him He is an Old Boy of Westminster and his stage act involves his playing a drunken Irish folk musician. He goes to great lengths to make this impersonation convincing, dressing in a tramps clothes and even blacking his teeth. House Points: Vince Cable and Northern Rock

Gravatar My House Points column from today's Liberal Democrat News. Fairy tales The great nineteenth-century radical journalist William Cobbett wrote that it was typical of Britain to have the National Debt but the Crown Jewels. As Vince Cable pointed out in his question to the Alistair Darling on Monday, something similar is now the case with Northern Rock. Under the his plans the risk stays with the taxpayer but any profits will go to private investors. Vince said the BBCs political correspondent had described Richard Branson as looking like the "cat what got the cream". Which is hardly surprising. He appears ...

Ken Livingstones faces libel action

Gravatar Well - today's Evening Standard has brought the news that Ken Livingstone is going to be sued for libel by Brenda Stern. She's the whistleblower who highlighted a series of concerns over financial management during Ken's reign and was sacked, raising the obvious question of whether she was sacked because she'd raised those concerns. Mayor Livingstone has laid into her, saying, "we had to get rid of after complaints she was intimidatory to the staff working for her." Does this MP live in a parallel universe

Gravatar With the government having recently announced a goldplated handout to the directors and shareholders of Northern Rock to ensure the bank is a tempting, subsidised going concern ready for takeover, I thought I would take a look at what Labour MPs had to say on nationalising it. Pennycook Lane Sheltered Housing

Gravatar Some time ago, following my request after speaking with residents here, the City Council installed a useful handrail on the southern end of the pavement here, near to Perth Road. Pennycook Lane runs downhill to Perth Road and the elderly residents in the sheltered housing found it a hazard to walk down in icy/snowy and wet conditions. Although the handrail has proved a boon, it only covered the southern end of the pavement as the northern end (the sheltered houses nearest to Blackness Primary School) has a more gradual gradient and doesn't meet the usual criteria for a handrail. The Spotlight record of "all year round and certainly not just at election time"

Gravatar The Spotlight Team all year round and not just at election time is a mantra we know and love in Fortune Green and West Hampstead. The main reason it is so good is that it is true - for 32 years the Liberal Democrats (and the predecessor parties) have produced and delivered the Spotlight newsletter month after month, year after year. And it's not a propaganda piece - it deals with real street and resident issues. Over the years it has dealt with virtually every possible topic. Labour lets us down over plastic bags

Gravatar I've blogged before about some of the great things local communities, such as residents and businesses in Crouch End, are doing to help tackle over-use of plastic bags - with all the litter and environmental problems that flow from them. So it's really disappointing that this week Labour councillors in Haringey blocked moves to support more of these schemes in our borough. Cuckoo Lane Play Area Proposal

Gravatar On Wednesday afternoon I attended a drop-in consultation session at Heaton Park County Primary school on Cuckoo Lane. There are proposals to create some children’s play areas along the front of the school (on the Cuckoo Lane side) and we wanted to make sure that local residents had the chance to let us know what they thought. Day 2577: 'Ndividual Health Service

Gravatar Tuesday: Mr Clogg has announced exciting new Health policies for the Liberal Democrats. The aim is to enable people to take charge of their own health needs, rather than having some remote minister dictate to them what they will get. The Health Service is a BRILLIANT thing: looking after the poorly is truly a mark of being civilised. But too often the bureaucracy put in place by the Labour leaves doctors and nurses struggling to meet Whitehall's targets instead of the needs of their patients. It is time to put a stop to that by putting people back in change. ...

Day 2576: Actually, it IS the Economy, Stupid!

Other chaps guesstimate that it's worth a bit more, so they will buy. The market averages out the estimates of value and works out the right sort of price.
