Hip Time at the Hop Cellars

Gravatar Brian Paddick had his in-house launch (as opposed to the recent public one at Lambeth Town Hall) at the Hop Cellars in Southwark tonight, with all five current LibDem GLA members, various hopeful GLA candidates and key activists by the score. Such parties can frankly be a bit tedious on occasion, but this one swang, not just [...]

Suicide bombings in the Philipines

Gravatar I honestly don't have an obsession with thing Filipino, be they monkeys or bombers. However, I read this and it struck me as rather odd. JI, the Islamist movement, have been using female suicide bombers in the Philippines (that's not the weird bit). What is very strange is how the media are referring to them as "sexy bombers". How are they "sexy" Most irregular. Note: The photograph for this post is not a Filipino suicide bomber. That was difficult to find. I believe this is a Palestinian militant of the Hamas organization judging by the flag, sash, and head bands. ...

Nick Clegg must prove we trust the British people on Europe

Gravatar Whilst the Lib Dems news policy of a referendum on out continued membership of the EU might be inspired, it serves merely to gloss over the fact that we promised a referendum on the EU Constitution, and as has been shown by various reliably sources, the EU reform Treaty is virtually identical to the EU constitution. So shouldn't we support the referendum we promised Others I know feel the same way too. I am not sure that Nick Clegg should be held to manifesto pledges made in the name of a party led by Charles Kennedy in 2005, but I ...

Official: UK voting system open to fraud

Gravatar What has Europe ever done for us Well, that question was partially answered today: it can expose the Labour Governments connivance in creating a British electoral system which is open to fraud. Shameless Behaviour

Gravatar I have just come off the phone having had a 30 minute telephone conversation with a resident worried about the planned affordable housing in the village. It seems they are horrified at the prospect of having to share the same air as people living in 22 affordable houses. Of course, they werent against affordable housing, it was just that the proposed development was in the wrong location. Whats a wrong location Anywhere near them! Nobody can just come out and say that so they have to have good reason. The reasons for objecting to this particular development were as follows; ...

Gravatar I can’t help but agree with James Graham’s view that "… if the Lib Dems are in favour of a referendum on our continued membership of the EU, which we apparently are, then if that option looks as if it will get nowhere (which it does) we should be supporting the next best option, a referendum [...]

EU Reform treaty: Death by tumble dryer

Gravatar I now know how a cat feels trapped inside a washing machine when the tumble dry cycle goes onto overdrive. It's like being trapped in the EU Reform Treaty debate. Round and round it goes, and where it stops....we all heave a sigh of relief. Fortunately, since the last fast spin cycle of this debate, I've managed to clarify my thinking - helped, largely, by Messrs Clegg and Huhne (yes, in the

Gravatar Largely unnoticed, a few hundred people in Chelmsford and communities across the country keep the local voluntary organisations going - doing so much good for their area. As an example of terms discussed, 'Skimble-Skamble' is such a good invocation of the Mayoral campaign of Boris Johnson that you dont really need to click to find its meaning. Thank you Mr Brown, but what have I done to deserve this kind gift from the taxpayer

Gravatar Mr Brown's New Labour, New Capitalist government has given me a handout. Very nice of them to do so but I'm not sure why I have been given such a generous dollop of cash at the expense of the taxpayer. We are shareholders in Northern Rock and yesterday's announcement of super-goldplated absolutely-no-risk-to-shareholders and investors bond issue has certainly helped to push up the price of the

Which means it is time to start posting the old brute's latest diary here. Tuesday I hurry to Westminster to offer my heartfelt congratulations to young Nicholas Clegg on his election to the leadership of the Liberal Democrats. Cheeky Girls "vetoed" from performing at LibDem black-tie event

Gravatar The Telegraph Spy says that the Cheeky Girls were "vetoed" by LibDem HQ from appearing at a party black-tie event, for fear of 'offending female MPs'. Whatever the real story is, the Cheeky Girls should have been vetoed on the grounds of being relatively talentless one hit wonders whose act is based on a feintly ludicrous initial idea. "We are the Cheeky Girls" raised the odd titter. But to

Why does the phrase "stupid prat" come to mind when Labour Minister Ivan Lewis says something

Gravatar Ivan Lewis attempted today to through mud at Nick Clegg's excellent announcement of minimum health and care guarantees for the elderly, which would become part of the Lib Dems focus on health issues. But like any other thick yob, he highlights his own stupidity and his own government's shortcomings in doing so. Some might say Mr Lewis has made himself look a right stupid prat in speaking out before he has actually thought about what he means to say. Under the Lib Dem plans announced today there would be 1) A £2bn care guarantee for the elderly, based on need ...

Giving 'Markets' a bad name in turbulent times

Gravatar TV news programmes (and other so-called bits of journalism) may be damaging the health of markets by discrediting the whole concept by their labelling. Because when they go to report on The Markets they mean the casino of share and currency prices, and the second guessing of trends, and parroting of predictions. Often about as relevant to real market economics as opinion polls are to real politics. With the current uproar the whole concept of serious economics risks being ever so slightly discredited. And that would be a rather dangerous thing. Bloomberg Television Economics is what John Kay calls the ...

Gravatar The BBC reports that Council of Europe have stated that the UK voting system has few proper safeguards and it is wide open to fraud. The main findings of the Council of Europe are that it is ; 1) Childishly simple to create bogus voters. 2) Postal vote fraud is very easy. Teenage spirituality leads to mental health problems

Gravatar Worried about teenage crime, pregnancy and mental health problems If so, you can now point the finger in an unusual direction: religion. According to a study in Australia, church-going and conventional religion is linked towards happiness and good mental health. Unconventional religion - "trendy spiritualism", if you're a journalist - can cause problems. These include mental health issues, anxiety and depression - alongside more serious signs of demonic possession including projectile vomiting and your head spinning all the way around on your neck. You'd have almost thought the Guardian wanted a recession

Gravatar The Guardian, which has gone down in my estimations following its piss poor coverage of the US Presidential primaries, reports that crisis still reigned even though the Fed cut the rates. The BBC is far more measured and quotes the figures, which show stabilization. I think anybody actively trying to bring about a recession is in many ways repellent and needs their head and their hearts examined. P.S. The photo is generic, not a screen shot of the days events.

Mr Clegg said, until David Cameron explains what the Conservatives would propose to do if this treaty were rejected his position makes no logical sense.' 'Brilliant' and 'policy' are two words that nornmally dont go together but our approach of showing that the Tories dont have a clear idea what to do over the European treaty and Northern Rock is simple yet utterly flawless. Nothing more than lip service to localism

Gravatar Hazel Blears, the Communities and Local Government Secretary, was in the news today with plans for a contract between local government and the people. The plans struck me as a pretty good idea at first. But the more Ive thought about it, the more Ive come to the conclusion that its yet another bit of New Labour tinkering that will do nothing to increase either participation or satisfaction.   The idea is that public service providers like Councils will effectively sign a contract with local people to provide a certain level of service. Why the recession can be a good thing if we are wise

Change the names and youve got a Lewis Carroll poem in the making. Smacking ban

Gravatar In many ways the UK government's decision that new law-making powers for the assembly government to protect vulnerable children should not extend to a complete smacking ban was predictable. They have long made it clear that they consider this matter to be a criminal justice matter and that they believe there is no support for it amongst voters in England and Wales.
