Clegg on Trident: legal inconsistency?

Gravatar For balance, Nick Clegg also set his position on Trident out recently. It is trenchantly argued.  He provocatively compares Chris Huhne’s position to Margaret Thatcher’s handling of Europe.  Like Chris’ position, the wat it is articulated contains one problem. Nick’s stance can be summarised as: 1. We should aim to get rid of all nuclear weapons. 2. The best way to [...]

Association of British Counties calls for a new name for Durham Unitary Council

Gravatar The Association of British Counties (ABC), a body which promotes the importance of the historic counties to the culture and heritage of the UK, is calling on local councillors to choose a new name for the Unitary Council which will shortly replace Durham County Council and the 7 district councils within its area. ABC says that the name 'Durham County Council' or 'County Durham Council' would be inappropriate since the area of the new Unitary Council only covers about 2/3 of historic County Durham and actually excludes a large majority of the population of the historic County. The area of ...

Gould Report into Scottish Elections

Gravatar I have been reading the Independent Review on the Scottish Parliamentary and Local Government Elections 2007 - The Gould Report, from the Electoral Commission. It is an excellent examination of why the elections went so wrong. The report gives various options for solutions in each area it examined. My own conclusions from the report are: 1. While holding the elections on the same date increases

Reduce, re-use, recycle ?

Gravatar Bonfire night. All our paper (much from the detoxed desk!) is neatly lined up for recycling and not thrown on a bonfire, which would be rather satisfying if not very ecological. How many people have got equipment and gadgets for the garden that they don't use all of...

Hell is paved with good intentions

Gravatar (http://www.samueljohnson.com/road.html) The Israeli military slang is very rich and colourful. However, like cockney it is almost impossible to translate to another language. In Hebrew the words for putting in effort translates literally as ‘sinking it in’ thus the word play “He who sinks in, sinks!”. Meaning there is no point in putting in your hart, blood, and sweat as it would not be appreciated or worse it would be used against you. It is not hard to find such situations in military and public life. This saying is obviously not politically correct and is in contrast to the fable of ...

Chris decides to keep pushing Trident

Gravatar I agreed with James Graham that it would be a shame is the leadership contest becomes all about Trident.  But both the candidates seem determined to give it a certain amount of attention. Commercials Hall of Fame

Gravatar Some people think that marketers and advertisers are the spawn of Satan. Kop Lob Pob a Job can not agree. Over the next few days and weeks, I aim to post a few ads that brought cheer where there was boredom, brought delight where there was only a half-time cup of tea, and brought creativity where there was only the commercialisation of trivial items made to seduce the criminally stupid. Face it dave, you can redesign the label but the contents remain tainted

Gravatar So a Tory candidate has had to resign after endorsing that troubled and deeply limited politician, Enoch Powell, who famously ran away from the challenge of improving our society, instead promising us ‘rivers of blood’ as a result of untrammelled immigration. His ‘prediction’ never came about thanks primarily to the sensible approach to this issue among more intelligent politicians and the ingrained tolerance which people try to deny but which Britain still enjoys, whatever the wilder elements on the right wing and in the media would have us believe. Unfortunately, a Tory, one Nigel Hastilow, decided to stoke this particular ...

Clear Blue/Red Water......

Gravatar I awoke this morning to the news of the government's "radical" (their word not mine) approach to tackling the perennial problem of NEETs (those young people Not in Education Employment or Training) force them to stay in prison, whoops sorry, school until they are 18! Is this the same Gordon Brown advocating this who apparently advocates votes at 16? And, if you decide you would rather not...........you will be sent directly to ...

The problem with liberal economics: educate me

Gravatar This post is largely inspired by this one, and the resulting comments. I'd advise anyone reading this to read that too. I'm an economic liberal. I think that some regulation is necessary, but that we have more regulation than we presently need, and that this tends to act in favour of the large corporations who can most easily absorb the costs of this regulation. I think that the government wastes enough money at present that it has the scope to their cut taxes or redistribute money in a far more straightforward and direct way. I believe in the ability of ...

Nick Clegg Welsh launch

Gravatar I was not at the Swansea launch of Nick Clegg's campaign in Wales last Monday as I was in Malta. However, his speech is here and it is bi-lingual. An impressive exercise in pushing all the right buttons. The Welsh hustings are on Wednesday in the Marriott Hotel, Cardiff. Both candidates have a meeting with the Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Group first. Perhaps then Chris Huhne can clarify exactly what his policy is on Trident.

Unitary vision for Norfolk is revealed

Gravatar I have it on good authority that only two options are now being considered when it comes to the revised unitary status for Norfolk. It has been revealed to councils that there will be either a single unitary Norfolk County or a three authority option with Norwich, Broadland and South Norfolk being merged to form one authority, North Norfolk and Great Yarmouth another and Breckland and Kings Lynn the third. This will of course lead to some really unwieldy authorities with no natural centre or sense of community. Quite what Wells Next the Sea has to do with Hopton On ...

Nick Clegg's views on education

Gravatar Last week I wrote about the two Lib Dem leadership candidates' views on education and mentioned Nick Clegg's advocacy of the "pupil premium" - a scheme that would fund pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds more generously. Nick first put forward this idea in a pamphlet he wrote with Richard Grayson in 2002. It was called Learning From Europe: Lessons in Education, and if you search the backwaters of his campaign website you will find a link to a pdf version of it. And very good it is too. It is not a rehearsal of Liberal Democrat pieties: it is realistic about ...

Forcing educashun is not the answer

Gravatar The proposal in tomorrow's Queen's speech to raise the compulsory education age from 16 to 18 is deeply ill-judged. As with many of the government's nannying interventions in our lives it is being introduced, favourably with the best intentions, unfavourably to be seen to doing something. David Laws, the Liberal Democrats Education spokesperson hits the nail on the head when he comments: "There is a real problem with young people dropping out of education at 16, but the right approach is surely to tackle poor basic skills at an early age and making the curriculum more relevant." While we all ...

Racist or not?

Gravatar According to West Brom Blog or Dafink respectively, Nigel Hastilow is not a racist, he is "an a***hole" or "stupid". A case of overclegging the pudding

Gravatar Bold words from Young Master Clegg in his campaign email today: On our core liberal issues, I believe we must be bold. We must take our ideas, and turn them into action. This week I took the first step: we have always opposed identity cards but I became the first national politician to pledge to refuse to register, and risk going to court for my principles. Gravatar Searching through a 1942 edition of the Manchester Guardian (now theguardian), I came across this letter dated October 2nd of that year. It’s from a J. L. Edwards of Whitefield. It is to be hoped that members of the House of Commons will avail themselves to the full of the opportunity offered by the Home Secretary when he moved the second reading of the Prolongation of Parliament Bill. He then repeated the pledge already given by the Government that before a general election could be held facilities would be given for the discussion of the electoral system, so that there ...

Three Tory Parties walk into a Bar…

Gravatar The idea that the Liberal Democrats wouldn’t be distinctive, or that we would become a ‘3rd Tory Party’ if we re-adopted a more liberal economic policy is an interesting one. There’s two errors at the root of this argument: One is that liberal economics naturally belong to the Tories. Not true. It’s ours and we should be able to speak with authority on it. We can reclaim it by demonstrating how we can use it to deliver liberal desired outcomes, not conservative desired outcomes. Since we disowned liberal economics — signing away our intellectual property to those who would, ironically, ...

Gravatar Since we moved in here, we've laboured under the impression that it wouldn't be easy to replace our central heating timer. Pakistan is Convulsing Through Dictatorial Measures

Gravatar The decision by General Musharraf to impose martial law has set back Pakistan in the eyes of other nations, especially when so many nations realise that military rule is not only socially counter-productive, it is also leads to economic disaster. Today, Pakistan is virtually overwhelmed by the economic powerhouse that India has become and frankly I cannot conceive that India would ever tear up their governance framework and turn to the imposition of martial law. In fact, India has moved on and does not spend the enormous sums of resources on being a counterweight to Pakistan and this position came ...

Throughout the campaign so far I have seen Chris Huhne impress Lib Dem members with intelligent, articulate answers. The Turn Of The Tide

Gravatar This article on the BBC is the first public sign that people inside Labour are just as worried about Clegg as many in the Tories are. There is a feeling of ‘despondancy’ within the Labour Party. Do they feel the end is near? Harriet Harman confirms (at least in my mind) that senior cabinet ministers are under orders to keep pointing out their latest line that they’re “united” - that’s what they want the public to believe, whether or not it’s actually true - it’s believable though. Gravatar All of the papers this morning report on unrepentant Conservative parliamentary candidate, Nigel Hastilow, who stepped down last night after a storm of protest over his remarks that Enoch Powell was right to make his notorious "rivers of blood speech" on the effects of immigration in Britain. He fell on his sword rather than apologise for his remarks, though according to the Guardian, comments on Conservative Home seems to indicate that there are still a lot of Tories who support him in what he said: His views sparked a lively debate on the Conservative Home website, showing the party is ...
