“All politicians lie”

Gravatar James Graham has very effectivly taken apart the suggestion of making it a criminal offence for politicians to lie. I agree with what James says on this but I think political dishonestly is something to which political reformers need to pay some attention. If we asked any average group of people what they think of politicians you will hear a negative response and if you ask for particulars, “they all tell lies”, will be a fairly common (albeit unfair) complaint. One thing you could possibly do is to attach legal status to official election manifestoes and require that subsequent deviation (i.e. doing the very opposite of what was in the ...

Advice for councillors (and anyone dealing with authority)

Gravatar I was phoned tonight by a councillor for mid-meeting legal advice. The question was what to do when, without prior notice to officers or other parties, the Conservatives want to variously put the meeting into private session and start removing councillors from committees. If you can’t flick through the Constitution and Standing Orders quickly enough to show that what they want to to is ultra vires then what you do is ask put the burden on them.  Ask them what the justification is and where the power exists for them to do what they want.  It’s a basic constitutional principle that, with a few exceptions, any public ...

Capo di Capo Westminster rumble

Gravatar Every week leading Capos of three Families come together in Westminster car park to yell insults at each other. We no like this tradition much as Liberali family always look little small against large packs of Labouristi and Conservatori. However all respect no violence tradition in confines of car park, so we know we safe. All last month Don Brown been dropping hints that he going to start big rumble in the Territories. But now he back-down, shoulders little more stooped, smug grin not to big, and Labouristi not looking so clever. "Is this the mighty Don Brown" yell Don ...

Ted Sorensen’s back?

Gravatar I’ve heard a weird rumour about Ted (aka Theodore) Sorensen writing for whoever wins the Democratic Party nomination for US President in 2008.  I strongly doubt that that it’s true- not least given he is a very much declared Obama supporter. For those who need reminding, Ted Sorensen is possibly the greatest peacetime political speechwriter of the last century.  He was chief White House speechwriter 1960-1963, was also a successful commercial attorney, and I seem to be the only person who sees that Sam Seeborne of the West Wing was blatantly based on him.  It’s a tragedy for America that he failed to be elected to the Senate and ...

The next Norwich manager ?

Gravatar Before meeting Iain Dale earlier this evening I was helping run the school football team, and it was at the end of the match that I realised that it is I, not Neil Warnock, Steve Bruce, Peter Taylor or any other football manager that has the motivational skills needed to turn Norwich City's fortunes around. My school team was losing two nil at half time. I gave them the motivational talk at the break but I was not sure they really believed it, understood it or wanted to listen and then I spied the opposition. Rather than working as a ...

Inheritance Tax and Dancing on the Head of a Pin with Nick Clegg

Gravatar At the WATO fringe Nick Clegg made a comment that I didn't get a chance to come back on, namely that as far as tax goes all three main parties were "dancing on the head of a pin". That may well be true Nick, but that doesn't make it right. On Sunday, Simon ( there is only one, no not Cowell!) was chatting to Andy Marr about us and the Tories being the tax cutters in contrast to Labour. Oh heavens, have I woken up in a parallel universe?! This piece by Johann Hari in today's Indy says it all ...

If NICE won't license Herceptin, I can't see them allowing this in the UK

Gravatar The National Institue for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has something of a reputation for preventing (or should that be helping) local Primary Care Trusts from properly giving out some drug treatments because of the costs, even when there is medical proof the drugs will work. So I can hardly see NICE allowing this on the NHS !

Plotinus, Porphyry, Dobson, Chew, Willis

Gravatar Plotinus, the philosopher of ancient Greece who gave us the six Enneads, had atrocious handwriting, did not properly separate individual words, and did not bother himself with the niceties of spelling. His student Porphyry, who edited, polished and arranged the Enneads for publication, had the thankless preliminary task of transcribing Plotinus’ shoddy and near-illegible scribbles. That was almost two thousand years ago, yet in many ways it describes perfectly the working relationship that obtained between Dobson and Marigold Chew. The out of print pamphleteer had an abysmal scrawl, possibly because of the unusual way he clutched his pencil, like a ...

Upon realising his error, and whilst being in Norfolk, Iain took the opportunity to apologise for his past mistakes to Lib Dem Blogger Nich Starling, and joined the Lib Dems (see photo). Sportsability sessions earn a grand boost

Gravatar Young people across the Borough of Redcar & Cleveland are cashing in thanks to two pots of funding that reward bright ideas. The Council-run Youth Opportunity Fund and the Youth Capital Fund have allocated over £250,000 to 79 successful applications since the funds were launched at the start of the year - and there's still over £180,000 left to allocate. Gravatar T’other night I traced the usual twenty-two step route home from the pub after a hard evening’s grass roots research (findings: not even very drunk men will listen to me talking about income tax for very long, a number of people plan to vote for Greenpeace, and far more people plan not to vote at all because It’s All A Conspiracy Against the Working Man) and hied me in a slightly deflated mood to the chippy. Meanwhile, it appears that Michael Howard has withdrawn his consent to appear in the film. Inheritance Tax

Gravatar Inheritance tax seems to be making the news at the moment, with both the Tories and Labour trying to outdo each other in reducing it. This only goes to show just how similar the two big parties have become. Inheritance tax should, if anything, be increased. One thing that seems bizarre to me is quite why so many people worry about inheritance tax in the first place. In reality it simply isn't an

Here in Truro we have just set up a Bids Board, that's where 1% of the business rate is diverted to a company, the Bids Board, to be used to improve the District. And the first thing we are spending money on are Christmas lights. Mixed economic news

Gravatar It was great to see Labour nicking our policies yesterday for the pre-budget report. If they won’t call an election, I suppose the next best thing is to keep us in opposition but apply our policies to the country all the same. The news that aviation taxes will be charged on planes, not passengers, is an idea of our’s (passed by Liberal Democrat conference in 2004). Taxing non-domiciles more is another (passed by Liberal Democrat conference in 2007). And so is raising the inheritance tax threshold (passed by Liberal Democrat conference in 2007) But beneath the headliune grabbing initiatives, the announcement ...

When I’m 64

I confess to being utterly beflummoxed by this news, chiefly because I’m not a Liberal Democrat, have never voted Liberal Democrat, and doubt that I ever would vote Liberal Democrat. Return to Punch and Judy Politics.

Gravatar This afternoons Prime Ministers Question Time saw the spectacle of David Cameron making far too much political capital out of Gordon Browns decision not to call a General Election. This would not be quite so distasteful had the Tories genuinely wanted one. The depths of Cameron playing 'Judy' in a return to the Punch politics he promised to avoid came when he accused Brown of being Phoney and stealing all the Conservative policies. The term, Pot, Kettle and Ethnic Minority springs to mind. In the village of Westminster this is of course all good sport. On the Radio Sets and ...

The big divide in the Lib Dems

Gravatar I actually don’t think there’s a huge divide when it comes to policy - only when it comes to the PSYCHOLOGICAL WILL TO WIN! There are some I think in this party (even at the top) who would simply prefer to live in the cosy world of being in third place getting early 20% when it comes to the GE. Jack Straw Is My Darling

Gravatar In all the fuss over the Comprehensive Spending Review, in which Alistair Darling surprised pundits expecting his speech to be written by Gordon Brown by having large chunks written by opposition parties too, it’s easy to miss that the infamous Minister of Justice has done exactly the same thing. While announcements on air charges, inheritance tax and scrapping capital gains tax relief seem spookily familiar to followers of Liberal Democrat policies, and while Mr Osborne squeaks ‘You’ve stolen the policies I stole from the Lib Dems! But that’s – that’s stealing!’ Jack Straw is also stealing a Lib Dem policy. ...

Buses - not quite as good as Ken makes out

Of course it's good that there are more buses in London, that they no longer arrive four at a time after a long wait, and that the price of using them has dropped. Comprehensive Spending Review

Gravatar Commenting on the pre-budget report and Comprehensive Spending Review, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor and Deputy Leader, Vince Cable MP said "Today's announcement of falling growth and the tightest spending round in a decade is the result of ten years of neglect by Gordon Brown. For too long The Prime Minister callously disregarded the mounting problem of personal debt, fuelled by irresponsible lending. With households now facing 160% income to debt ratios and spending a fifth of their income servicing existing debts, it has become inevitable that spending and growth will fall."

He made some good jokes: particularly "the 'do you know who I am' brigade" and "having to wait two years for a General Election when we can't wait 2 minutes for dinner." Devolution and Local Income Tax - Simon Jenkins in praise of Lib Dems

Gravatar Today's Guardian carries a nice enough piece by Simon Jenkins in praise of devolution and localizing taxation, in particular through "ability to pay" local income tax. Clearly Daahling has yesterday set the scene for another big spat about Council Tax as it seems that the local government settlement is going to leave little option but for local authorities to raise the hated tax by more than they otherwise would. And there are over 60 capital offences. One of the campaigns that Amnesty International will be running over the  next few months is seeking a reduction of these offences.
