Middle East: Breakthrough or Breakdown?

Gravatar {middle-east-map.jpg} This evening in Kennington, I led an informal discussion at a Lambeth LibDem Pizza and Politics on the Middle East, an area of the world I have been travelling in and writing about for nearly 40 years. Yesterday, the Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, went to the West Bank for face-to-face discussions with the Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, accepting (without going into detail) the principle of a viable Palestinian state. Recently, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia reiterated a plan which would mean that all Arab states would recognise Israel. And in November, under US sponsorship, there is due to be ...

Bonar Colleano

Gravatar He was one of Ian Drury and the Blockheads' "Reasons to be Cheerful". He was also an Americian actor who appeared in many British films of the 1940s and 50s. The 3rd November club has a fascinating essay by Tony Williams which examines Colleano's career and the way that Anglo-American relations were reflected in the films of the period more generally: During the second sequence of Powell and Pressburger’s A Matter of Life and Death (US Stairway to Heaven, 1946), the image changes from Technicolor showing David Niven’s last moments as an RAF flyer before he descends from his plane ...

An Encore for Israel's Noisy Eviction Theatre

Gravatar Over the years, various incidents have taken place whereby Israel noisily evicted settlers from land which it deemed no longer tenable. Today it evicted forcibly some squatters in Hebron. There were two families living in two houses, numbering perhaps 24 between them. To remove them, Israel sent over 200 police and border guards, and spent over $500,000 (according to alJazeera - note that of the

Normal service will be restored... eventually

Gravatar As you know, we in Amaranth have long been fond of Mark, for all of his foibles, inconsistencies, and puzzling eccentricities, and some of you will recall that he had planned to take him in hand and carry out a few 'improvements'. To be blunt, we hadn't had much success, and I was deeply concerned that he was regressing rather badly. So you can imagine my surprise to run into him in the library

Anyone could lose 189,000 AK-47's, really they could...

Gravatar I'm vaguely intrigued over the fuss that has been made over the news that US forces in Iraq has 'misplaced' huge amounts of equipment, and that it is probably being used against those very same US troops by insurgents. Firstly, this American administration probably has less interest in gun control than any of its predecessors. They, and I am particularly reminded of Dick Cheney in this regard,

Is it any wonder we are hated in Iraq if this is how we treat our friends

Gravatar This appalling story of how we are refusing to grant political asylum to 91 interpreters working with the British Army in southern Iraq highlights just how awfully we treat people who put their necks on the line to help us abroad. When even the Tories, not noted for their kind words on asylum, are saying these people and their families should be let in, surely it shows Gordon Brown up badly. Is it any wonder so many Iraqis want to shoot at British soldiers when the British government treats its friends so abysmally ?

The missing country

Gravatar Something I realised tonight - while the BBC’s India/Pakistan series of programmes is quite interesting, there seems to be no mention at all in them of Bangladesh. Indeed, discussions of the partition and the subcontinent in history often seem to ignore it entirely, despite the fact that between 1947 and 1971 it was actually the larger part of Pakistan in terms of population. It’s as though discussions of Partition are made easier by acting as though there was only one border line rather than two.

“Overlord” Ashdown of Kabul-sub-Hamdon?

Gravatar The Times says Paddy’s been courted to be an “Afghan overlord”, but Lib Dem Voice can (almost exclusively) reveal that he has declared himself content with ruling his garden and being ruled by his grandchildren. While our former leader batted off any idea of being Gordon Brown’s Foreign or Northern Ireland Secretary, rumours are still [...]

Gravatar 'A senior US official said Washington would seek guarantees that the men would be treated humanely and would not be allowed to pose a security threat.' (BBC) Washington is seeking guarantees that WE will treat them humanely when they are released from the abomination that is Guantanamo Bay???!! I honestly don't know where to start with this, my jaw is literally on the floor at the moment. Gravatar Wow! I've been ranked as the joint first female in Nich Starling's list of top 100 Lib Dem bloggers, alongside the venerable Lynne Featherstone MP. Electric Bikinis - How You Can Help the Environment

Gravatar Some fascinating, if slightly 'silly season' ideas about how modern technology might affect fashion and life in general here. First up is the solar bikini (a male version is available) which might run your mobile phone, IPod, and a small beer-chiller from the solar rays that, if they are giving you a tan, are probably causing skin cancer. Next up is the underwear (male and female) which can be used to control computer games. Clothes which look different to your phone than they do to you. Solar-powered accessories that turn into lightbulbs. Surely the techno-hippy's cup runneth over. I have ...

The Tom Cowie Affair - Exclusive.

Gravatar Liberal Leslie can exclusively reveal the truth between Cowie’s shocking attacks on Cameron today. In 2005 Cowie like all good millionaires gave half a million to the most inefficient political party of them all, the Conservatives. In early 2007 Cowie who made his money in the transport sector never growing up from his love of trains went to Indai to see how they travelled. There he came into contact with the startling good looking Hermit Brainy Blonde Bombshell. He immediately fell in love and joining in mediation with her saw the errors of his ways. What do you throw away? Do you have allotment mentality?

Gravatar I’m sure you’ve all heard of Gardeners Question Time on Radio 4 (a national treasure), even if you aren’t avid listeners. Recently they had an amusing discussion about how to break the allotment mentality of one of the questioner’s husbands and most of the panel admitted they had the same mentality, saving every little piece of string, paper, pot and the like. Wouldn’t it be great if we all had allotment mentality. We waste so much in the UK, and yet there are complaints about paying extra for the rubbish we throw away. When a country throws away about 1/3 ...

Tchaikovsky gets posthumous thumbs-up from Hitler

Gravatar That must win some weird title award. Tchaikovsky is one of my favourite composers. Anyone who can compose such a ballbreaker as the 1812 Overture is all right in my book (even though I don't think the man himself was too keen on that particular oevre). Hitler publicly reviled Tchaikovsky and other Russian and Jewish composers. It turns out he was an old mono-testicled hypocrite. His record

Welcome British change of tack on Guantanamo detainees

Gravatar It is good news that the British government has requested the release of a further five UK residents from Guantanamo Camp. This is a welcome change of direction following the change of Prime Minister. Guantanamo camp remains one of the most disgusting acts of the US government. Tony Blair should hang his head in shame for supporting Bush in Iraq, following such a shameful abuse of human rights.

One of the team has just wandered up to my end of the office to read out a choice comment. Everybody is a critic

Gravatar The BBC tell us that Dafydd Wigley is to use a speech at the National Eisteddfod to criticise the his own party for signing up to a coalition with Labour. The former Plaid leader will argue that the One Wales document was compiled too quickly, that almost half the policies in the document will need more funding, which has not been secured and that there is little chance of winning a referendum on the assembly gaining law-making powers. Mr. Wigley is also concerned at the opposition of most Labour MPs to the agreement and the impact this will have on ...

Foot & Mouth fears

Gravatar It's hard to believe that it is more than six years since the major outbreak of Foot & Mouth - so severe that the 2001 General Election had to be delayed owing to restrictions on movement in the countryside. It's difficult to convey the impact that the last outbreak had on a farming area such as parts of my constituency. When normal, peaceful village life is interrupted by burning piles of culled cattle and army trucks going backward and forward, it leaves a lasting impression. I remember vividly the fear among farmers that they might be next as the virus ...

SNAP! General Election?

Gravatar Reading a few posts today about Cameron (including Bob’s) has made me want to pose this question - is now the ideal time (for Gordon) for a general election? Apathy within the Conservative party at a local level is at its lowest point I can remember. So many activists and even Councillors are fed up with Cameron and this seems to be filtering down to the public. The Ealing Southall by-election proved what a terrible state they are in to fight parliamentary seats, so imagine the chaos at Tory HQ if there were 646 seats to fight at once. Whether ...

Happy Birthday Barbara Windsor

Gravatar Belated felicitations to Barbara Windsor, who was 70 yesterday. My rare viewings of EastEnders have not convinced me that she is much of an actress, but her appearance in Carry on Camping means she will always have a place in British cinema history. As Wikipedia records, the young Barbara came to prominence in the Joan Littlewood Theatre Workshop'sstage and film production of Sparrows Can't Sing in 1963. This gives me the chance to uncork a great trivial fact. Sparrows Can't Sing was written by Stephen Lewis, who went on to play Blakey in On the Buses.

Does signing true "fans" make a difference to the way they play ?

Gravatar As a football fan, I always dreamed of playing for my team. In my case it is Everton, although I am a big follower of Norwich City too. However, I get very frustrated at the mercenary nature of footballers these days and their perceived lack of effort. So this summer Everton seem to have taken something of a departure from the norm in signing two Everton fans. These fans are not just ordinary fans, they are England Under 21 player Leighton Baines and England B international Phil Jagielka. But to me it is an interesting move. I am sure these ...

Gravatar Iain Dale tries yet again to put up a sterling defence for the Conservative Party and Boris Johnson in this post HERE, but to be honest, when the only journalist that will defend you is Andrew Gilligan, you know you've got problems. Andrew Gilligan, who now seems to be running a "get labour" campaign in the wake of him losing his job at the BBC after the Hutton enquiry, is hardly the best journalist to read on such matters as he fails, in my estimation, to show any objectivity.

Okay so I haven’t read the 18,447 page document, but I have taken a look at Camelot’s press release (pdf). Gravatar Have you noticed how, since Gordon Brown took over, politics has acquired something of an edge? Of course, there was the Ealing Southall silliness, in which the political blogosphere became obsessed with spin and counter-spin (mea culpa, feeble “I didn’t start it” excuses notwithstanding). Now, with the dead tree press’ traditional silly season in full sway, the tone in the newspapers is becoming distinctly high pitched. Today is a case in point. The Conservative replied by stating that “There was a small policy group of about five people in charge of writing the manifesto and he was not involved in that." Gravatar I’ve wondered online before about the potential for politics, on online facilities like Second Life. American incompetence feeds the Iraqi insurgency

In addition some 135,000 pieces of body armour and 115,000 helmets have also vanished, again perhaps to end up in the hands of insurgents.
