Around the blogs: Cultured Liberal Democrats

Gravatar Like everyone else, I have been out delivering. But even at this time of year life is not all Focus leaflets and letterboxes for Liberal Democrats, as a journey round our blogs shows. Jonathan Fryer writes about T. E. Lawrence. Cicero writes about Bruce Chatwin (who would have liked to have been Lawrence). Clowns to the Left of Me has been to the National Theatre. Most impressively of all, Eric Avebury points us to the Edward II blog. This does what is says on the tin, and examines the events, issues and personalities of that monarch's reign. As ...

What do we want? a nice footrub and a sit down

Gravatar Word reaches us that Mark Thomas is organising a mass lone protest within the restricted zone around Parliament on 21 April. The aim is for there to be over 2,000 individual protests during the day, thereby doubling the number of demos that have happened within the restricted zone since the rules were introduced. More information and a useful tool for creating applications for permission is

Victoria Park

Gravatar In the recent Evening Telegraph item about graffiti (referred to below) I mentioned the graffiti in Victoria Park residents have complained about. Pleased therefore to receive this from the City Council Leisure & Communities Department today in relation to the badly graffitied white building : "I will have community services have this repainted"

Cases and Boxes

Gravatar As well as the canvassing in the evening, I attended to some case work today, having picked up a number of issues when speaking to people over the last few days. The pathway by the motorway at the back of Stanley Avenue North (connecting it to Bury Old Road) is strewn with litter, and I have asked the Council to take a look at that. I have also made some enquiries today about a Home Improvement

Chris Davies MEP joins us canvassing

Gravatar Tonight we were joined on the campaign trail in Rainsough by Chris Davies MEP, one of the Liberal Democrat Members of the European Parliament for the North West. Chris has been a great help to many local parties over the years, including our own here in Bury South, and tonight was no exception as he helped us canvass in support of my St Mary's campaign. Having a "dignitary" along with us didn't

A metaphor for Labour and the NHS

Gravatar In am amusement arcade today pushing two pences in to one of those machines with lots of levels pushing coins down various levels, with coins at each level falling down the side guaranteeing that on watter how much cash you put in you are guaranteed not to get your monies worth reminded of the NHS under Labour. Loads of levels of bureaucracy, each pushing cash back and forth before eventually pushing it down to the next level with less and less cash getting to the bottom meaning you will never get out what you put in to the NHS ...

The Correct Way to Kill

Gravatar This evening’s edition of The Avengers (BBC4 at 7.10, and again tomorrow night at 11.50) is one of the most amusing and – with its impeccably polite killers, an army of deadly agents inspired by Steed’s fashions, and Emma meeting her Eastern Bloc match – one of the most ‘iconic’, though hardly the most original. The US-financed colour episodes were really getting into their swing, so writer Brian Clemens decided he’d like to show American audiences some of what they’d missed in the early ’60s with this direct remake of The Charmers, a black and white episode with Honor Blackman. ...

Seizing the initiative

Gravatar Over at Lib Dem Voice, I’ve penned a rather long article about citizen’s initiatives, and why the Lib Dems ought to embrace them. I’m keen to kickstart a debate on this issue, so please do read it and add your own comments. Share This

Should we become a nation of contented losers?

Gravatar Direct democracy could not merely complement representative democracy, but could save it from its worst excesses. Claims that it leads to ill-considered, rightwing populism are just plain wrong. The great thing about being a Liberal Democrat is that the party practices what it preaches about democracy. While the Conservative Party made a big deal [...]

Questions

Gravatar I've had several questions posted as comments - to do with being a councillor, elections etc, so rather than lose them in comments on other posts I am going to try to deal with them as main posts. Because some of them have come from more than one person.. I am combining them into what I hope represents the spirit of what was said. But not now because the neighbourhood committee starts soon and I have to get there!

Election time

Gravatar I have been in the Lib-Dem office today sorting out all my literature and posters ready to get out in my ward. I may have mentioned before that my fellow candidate dropped out at the last minute so defending a seat on my own in this multi-member ward is going to be tough but certainly not impossible! My key themes are affordable housing, regeneration for employment, community facilities and cleaner streets - all in keeping with our local election manifesto of course! I am also trying to get out and about in other areas as well, delivered some leaflets ...

Day 2291: Life After Mars

Gravatar Tuesday: We are very SAD that the BBC’s OTHER Time Travelling TV series has come to an early end. Two seasons of “Life on Mars” weren’t enough. Three years would have been more satisfying: with the first about Sam’s life, a second to explore the world of 1973 before wrapping up in the third. On the other fluffy foot, they did do that rare trick of having the ending live up to expectations. Look away now, if you haven’t already seen it! Because in the end, DI Sam Tyler wasn’t mad, wasn’t back in time ...

Focus on early years

Gravatar CentreForum's latest pamphlet , 'The surest route: early years education and life chances' was published today and attracted the attention of Alexandra Frean in The Times under the title 'Unemployed mothers need free childcare 'for welfare of children'The report is premised on the growing body of evidence from around the world that a preschool education helps boost children's intellectual and social development. The report quotes Julian Astle, the author:The Government’s obsession with using childcare subsidies to boost employment, rather than to promote child development, has resulted in children from nonworking families being given less financial support than all ...

City traders need price controls to keep their drinks bills down

Gravatar When commentators mythologise about evil capitalists charging unfair prices for their goods, they usually juxtapose them with some (economically) poor unfortunate who is unable to exercise choice and so is obliged to part with more of their hard-earned and scanty resources than is fair. Outside the exercise of monopoly provision of essential services, there is little truth behind these claims. One must eat and drink, and one must be clothed, sheltered and warm. But one does not need a mobile telephone, so no matter how high the prices of mobile telephony, no purveyor of telephones or air-time can “gouge” ...

Today Programme hands a small propaganda victory to David Irving

Gravatar In reporting the death of author Kurt Vonnegut, the Today programme this morning managed to slip in a piece of misinformation that would no doubt have pleased David Irving and other Holocaust deniers. Vonnegut's best known book Slaughterhouse 5 is in part based on his experiences as a prisoner of war in Dresden during the Allied bombing raids of February 1945. The Today report referred to this and stated that ‘more than 100,000’ people died in the Dresden bombings. In fact, nearly all scholars who have researched this episode put the figure much lower – somewhere between 25,000 ...

Swiss man pardoned

Gravatar This guy is very lucky. On the 29th March I blogged about the Swiss man who had been sentenced to ten years in prison for insulting the King of Thailand. At the time I said that whilst ten years seemed an extremely stiff sentence the main problem was that he had lived in Thailand for 10 years and so he could hardly fail to know the situation with regard to insulting the King. Today come news that the King has pardoned him. According to the BBC "Now he has received a royal pardon, Mr Jufer is expected ...

Have I jumped ship to another political party?

Gravatar I have just got back from hunting the letter box. It is a fantastic game, you have a bunch of leaflets (usually the Lib Dem rag FOCUS, you walk up to the front door and then you spend about 5 minutes either looking for the letter box or trying to post a leaflet through the door whilst not allowing the bundle of leaflets to drop. It was whilst I was playing this game, that most Lib Dem are fond

Labour’s hospital grab is somewhat overstated

Gravatar There appears to be a small nugget of truth to this story, but it has been exaggerated. One does not build a hospital overnight (at least I hope one doesn’t), so the 2005 General Election figures are irrelevant to the number of hospitals built over the last decade. Compared to the 1997 results, the picture [...]

In the news

Gravatar Suddenly, everybody is writing about the Welsh Assembly elections. Well, OK it made The Guardian anyway. Somehow the newspaper of liberal middle England has managed to notice that there are significant events going on this side of the Severn Bridge. However, they only did so after the Prime Minister himself came here and even then, there is nothing in the article to suggest that its writer did anything more than cobble together a few words from the comfort of his or her London desk. Of more interest, at least to Welsh Liberal Democrats, is this article by ...

Songlines

Gravatar Bruce Chatwin is such an elusive figure. His elegant prose style is easy to read, yet the truths that he writes about are partial truths or even not true as he has put them down. He is a storyteller, and reading Nicholas Shakespeare's compendious biography one senses that there were few parts of Chatwin's own life that were not embellished. The writer of unvarnished, spare prose, lived a life where he found it difficult to speak many fundamental truths about himself. The result was great restlessness. A traveller to difficult and inaccessible places: Patagonia, Afghanistan, the Australian desert, Chatwin ...

Gravatar In Aqaba, for the fourth time in less than six months, to give my by now well-rehearsed lecture on T. E. Lawrence. Nostalgia unlimited

Gravatar It has been a good week for nostalgia. Firstly, we had the last episode ever of Life on Mars complete with some great 1980s tunes and a classic Ford Cortina and today we have Tony Blair and Tamsin Dunwoody on the front page of the Western Mail trying to imitate Daniel Craig in oversize lifejackets on a boat in Milford Haven Harbour. However, what has topped all of this is the news in today's Guardian that Cheetah, the original chimpanzee star of the Tarzan movies, is still alive and 75 years old this week. A code of conduct for bloggers

Gravatar Tim O'Reilly, the man behind Web 2.0, has called for a code of conduct for bloggers. The suggestion is a response to extreme and anonymous cyber-bullying directed against his friend Kathy Sierra. I sympathise entirely, and I much prefer self-regulation to legal obligation - but I'm not sure what a code of conduct is supposed to achieve. There's already a perfectly decent voluntary code of conduct; it's called good manners! If people have so little respect for others that they're prepared to send anonymous death threats and offensive pictures, what good will a voluntary code do? In the ...

Why London gives parties nightmayors

Gravatar The difficulties that both the Lib Dems and Tories are experiencing in finding suitable candidates for London Mayor is clearly unfortunate, but not entirely unpredictable.
