No apology for football fans from ITV news

Gravatar ITV's teatime news kindly provided football scores from today's Premiership matches. They read out the scores, even commenting on a couple of the results, then moved on. Nobody at ITV noticed that the scores were half time scores, not full times scores. No doubt anyone Tottenham fans watching will be very disappointed when watching match of the day tonight if they are expecting to see the nil-nil with Chelsea that ITV news announced. Oh dear !

Did Labour - not the Tories - finish off Ted Heath's dying wish?

Gravatar It's funny how fusty old minutes can point to misleading press reports. The Western Daily Press reported this in March: SIR TED'S LEGACY TO THE NATION SCUPPERED BY TORIES As a former Conservative Prime Minister his dying wish was to have a museum built in his memory at the place he loved the most.So it has come as something of a shock that Sir Ted Heath's final request that his beloved home be

Day 2287: Fear of Climate or Climate of Fear?

Gravatar Friday: What is the world coming to? Well, a STICKY END, it would appear – but at least everyone seems to be agreed on that now! Obviously it is a BIT of a rum do when a lot of scientists submit their workings and it is up to a bunch of politicians to say whether they are right or not. You might think that in a SENSIBLE world it would be the other way around. So, the general problem is that there’s not going to be enough water for lots of places and the land for ...

Gravatar Contrary to what the Birmingham Evening Mail would have you believe, Stuart Ritchie is in fact the Liberal Democrat candidate for Edgbaston Ward in Birmingham.

Mr Bean's holiday

Gravatar Not late with this one. Well, I do have a ten year old daughter and we watched it being filmed in Paris last May (left), so we had to go. Not a bad film. Laughed out loud several times. The end was quite rousing. Emma de Caunes (pictured) is captivating. A very good bit of entertainment. But it is always good to have a child to take to this sort of film!

Starsky and Hutch

Gravatar Yes, late again. Not a great film. It seemed on a par with some of the TV episodes. It killed 101 minutes. I find it very difficult to get past Owen Wilson's nose.

Master and Commander

Gravatar I always seem to be late watching films. Not only did I watch this on Film4, but it was Film4+1 because I was late for the start. What a wonderful action film! The battle scenes were stunning. I now wish I had watched it on the big screen, because seeing it in "letter box" format was a bit restricting.

Irish eyes aren't smiling (Harlequins 34 - London Irish 17)

Gravatar After three weeks off and over a month away from the Stoop Harlequins returned to action today against our old 'friends' from Reading, London Irish. This will be one of those games were the statistics will not tell the whole story. Irish dominated both territory and possession yet came away empty handed. Even a comically inept performance from referee David Rose (who it must be remembered also

The Boat Race - from a boat

Gravatar Getting ready .... and they're off.... At the start of the race Oxford is in the foreground with the eventual winners, Cambridge, beyond them. We had joined a boat load of Mayors and other guests for a Boat Race Day outing organised by the Mayor of Wandsorth in aid of his charity. I've never actually seen the race live before, and it was...

'David Cameron is an idiot'

Gravatar I thoroughly enjoyed Charlie Brooker's article about David Cameron in G2 earlier this week. I can't say that it was based on much substance, but as a subjective, shot-from-the-hip rant it was absorbing: David Cameron is an idiot. A simpering, say-anything, dough-faced, preposterous waddling idiot with a feeble, insincere voice and an irritating tendency to squat near the top of opinion polls. I

The story of 2 2-1's

Gravatar The most important 2-1 was the win for Leeds to day at Elland Road. The first of what I feel are three must win home games until the end of the season. Peter Halmosi gave Plymouth the lead in the first half and David Healy levelled just before the break with Michalik scoring the winner when he headed in from Alan Thompson's free-kick. Most importantly Leeds are out of the bottom three for the first time since November!!! We are Leeds, We are Leeds We are Leeds We are Leeds, We are Leeds We are Lee-eeds ...

Richard Porter: “Why I defected to the Tories”

Gravatar Last December, three Lib Dem PPCs defected to the Tories, sending little ripples across the blogosphere. With only a formulaic press release from the Tories, and a brief quotation from each of the runaways, it was hard to understand their reasons for leaving. Now, Richard Porter, one of the defectors, has written an article in Pink News, explaining why he made the switch. He focuses on the changes that have taken place in both parties. He argues that the Conservatives have “changed their spots”, and these changes are “sincere” and “substantive”. At the same time, the Liberal Democrats ...

I can't find them anywhere

Gravatar Out canvassing in Saughton Mains, Edinburgh Central, today with Siobhan Mathers. The constituency is a two-horse-race between us and Labour. Well that is what it says on paper. But where are the committed Labour supporters? Not here to be sure.

How the Party works (1) - Local Parties

Gravatar As promised, here is the first of a series of pieces which examine how the Party should work (I'm not saying that it does, mind you) and, inspired by Aaron Trevena, I thought that I should start with the basic building block, Local Parties. Local Parties actually have remarkable autonomy for the most part, with the right to select their Parliamentary candidate(s), delegates to their Regional

Universal grants: the wrong solution to the wrong problem

Gravatar The Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) have an interesting article titled "Whatever happened to student radicalism?", written by Ben Lewis and Dave Isaacson. While it suffers from the usual "everyone who disagrees with us is right-wing" disease common among socialists and communists, it is worth reading for its analysis of the fractures between the various socialist groups. However, I think their opposition to means-tested grants and the reasons for it are misplaced. Their suggested replacement with universal grants are the wrong solution to the wrong problem, and it is this I wish to mention. I am opposed to ...

Half time: Chelsea 0 Spurs 0

Gravatar As I am watching the football in O'Neills in the middle of Bristol on my own, thought I might as well do a quick half-time blog. The Spurs fans are all in good voice, even if we've only got half as many there as we were allowed when I was at Stamford Bridge for our FA Cup match. Can only really hear our lads and I don't think that's because Sky have only put a mic down our end judging by the chants of "just like the Library". First 10 minutes I was thinking we might be lucky ...

John Sentamu - just a teeny bit of a hypocrite

Gravatar Archbishop of York John Sentamu is being mentioned in the news today for complaining that the church is obsessed with process rather than mission. I’m just watching the church of England Synod on BBC Parliament. After an amendment to an amendment had been agreed politely about the synod, up pops Archbishop Sentamu - [...]

Long-awaited resumption of alcoholic consumption

Gravatar I'm nearly there! I have abstained from alcohol since Ash Wednesday. It will give you some idea of my state of mind, to know that I have just googled "When does Lent end?". The answer is apparently after at the Saturday vigil. I will heroically keep going until lunchtime tomorrow, when I am envisaging a "Live Blog" as I down my first gulps of the blessed nectar. Already I am planning what I will

Why am I a Lib Dem?

Gravatar It's a question that I get asked from time to time - to be fair, usually by people who are wondering why anyone would get involved in any sort of politics. As I have also, very amusingly, recently been described on a Tory blog as a "communist", I thought I'd do a brief explanation of why I'm a Lib Dem. It's a bit sad to have to admit, but I've always been interested in politics - well, current affairs - and indeed the geeky elections part of that too, particularly starting with 1992. When I was about 17, ...

Royal Park Community Consortium Public Meeting

Gravatar The RPCC is a relatively new Campaigning group set up to keep the former Royal Park Primary School building in Public Ownership (state ownership doesn't bother me personally, community owndership is another matter) and maximise the amount of Community use of the building (which certainly does bother me) This came at the end of what was a long day as I had already had a meeting with Friends of the Earth to discuss Incineration and the Chair of a Local Community group to discuss planning and licensing issues. (born of delusions of grandeur probably as my influence on any ...

Leeds International Olaf Palme Peace Lecture

Gravatar Nobody who knows me would believe me if I didn't tell the sordid truth about this. The most exciting thing about Tuesdays Lecture was getting to shake the hand of and meet Captain Jean Luc Picard, indisputably the greatest Captain the Enterprise has ever had.... I'm really very sorry. Setting aside my Sci Fi obsession this was a moving and passionate lecture by Patrick Stewart, a prominent Amnesty International activist on the subject "Why Promote Human Rights". Its an Annual Lecture organised by Leeds City Council to commemorate the life and work of Olaf Palme the assassinated Swedish ...

Mexicans have Cornish miners to thank

Gravatar Had a fairly relaxed day yesterday all round and managed to polish off the rest of my casework - bar one or two tricky ones that are taking a while to sort out. Just left Paddington, on the way to visit a friend in Bristol. At the station there was a little display about Cornish mining. Having even been down a Cornish mine when I visited my former ward colleague and Newquay & St.Austell Lib Dem Stephen Gilbert last summer, I was interested to see the facts and figures on display. Apparently, it was emigrating Cornish miners who ...

Day 2286: The Best of News; the Worst of News

Gravatar Thursday: No sooner do we have the GOOD NEWS that the Iranians have released our sailors and marines, than we get the TERRIBLY BAD NEWS that four more of our soldiers have been exploded in Iraq. Both of these stories in their contrasting relief and horror remind us that our armed forces are brave and loyal and doing the very best that they can. But that we should NOT have sent them out there in the first place and that so long as we make them stay in a dangerously unstable region then we are making the ...

Pink Chicken

Gravatar Yesterday was a fine day. As well as leafleting a substantial part of St Mary's as a group, I myself spent much of the day with friends enjoying the sunshine. A couple of people had got over-excited at the appearance of the sun, and organised barbecues, to which I was invited. I enjoy playing potentially lethal games involving barely-cooked meat, so I ate lots at both of these occasions. Sadly

What does a Councillor actually do? (6) small changes over a long time

Gravatar A little over two years ago I was trying to console my friend Jon who lived on Hyde Park Road about his car wing mirror having been kicked off. Again. There was something very "Hyde Park" about the rate at which his car was being done over every few weeks. The answer he insisted was a CCTV scheme including a Camera at the Junction of Royal Park Road and Hyde Park Road. I disagreed but decided to think things through. Last week the new extension to the Hyde Park CCTV scheme went live. Two state of the art fixed ...

A sense of perspective on parking

Gravatar Saw this on the news last night. Obviously very, very sad. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/low/england/london/6534375.stm If it does turn out to be the result of an argument over parking, how incredibly futile that someone has lost their life over such a trivial issue.

A new Hornsey Hospital film

Gravatar I had a good Good Friday. I didn't do any work. Well - just a few blue envelopes for a good cause. Reading in the Guardian this morning Michael White's take on Brown's modus operandi. Truth and Illusion (Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? - Royal Exchange Manchester)

Gravatar No blogging for a couple of days because I've been up visiting my ancestral roots up in Lancashire. Blair to go - shock!

Gravatar Is there anything new to write about Tony Blair's departure? In the absence of a definitive date from the man himself, I think not. The Guardian however, believe that they know what is going to happen. They report this morning that the Prime Minister is likely to announce his departure on May 9 or 10, a few days after the end of his last election campaign. What is new is that Blair intends to devote most of his attention in his last few weeks to Scotland, where the Scottish Nationalist party is ahead in the polls and on ...

Conservative splits in Calderdale

Gravatar Calderdale politics seem to be as lively as ever this year with Chris O’Connor, a former Conservative Mayor, standing as an independent against a Conservative councillor (Hipperholme and Lightcliffe ward) whilst Shakir Saghir is standing for the English Democrats in Park ward, where he used to be a Conservative councillor (as was his father, whilst [...]

Phone Box Success!

Gravatar Back in December, I raised the issue of the "missing door" on Milnbank Road's phone box and the problems I had encountered trying to get a response from BT to get it fixed. Click on the headline above to view the original story. Anyway, despite assurances the company would try to fit a new door in January, it didn't happen, so I have since been in touch with BT again and this time it has paid off - there's now a new door on the box - see right (taken in last week's brilliant sunshine!)

A good reason to vote Ukip ?

Gravatar More nepotism in French politics, more corruption in French politics and also a former senior EU official involved too, so reports say (see below). I'm well known in the Lib Dems locally for my outspoken Euro scepticism (showing you can be Euro sceptic and Lib Dem), but I'm sure people reading THIS story would consider Ukip, although I wouldn't.
