Doom and gloom

Gravatar Doom and gloom all round at Elland Road as Leeds lost 2-0 away at Sunderland and now find themselves five points adrift of safety. Added to which Gus Poyet the assistant manager got sent off. Dennis Wise was quoted on Radio Leeds as saying that he was not concerned and hope to bring in a couple of new faces during the transfer window. Rumours are that his transfer kitty may be as big as four million but I wonder whether he will have to let a couple of players go as well. Healy and Kilgallon seem the most likely to ...

Iran, the UN and the UK - Bush poodle?

Gravatar Over Christmas the UN Security Council passed a motion supporting motions against Iran. Would this be Iran that days early Blair was praising as moderate and suggesting that we should talk to about how to sort out the mess in Iraq? Would this be Iran that recently held another set of democratic elections for Local Government and the Experts' Assembly? Would this be Iran that despite not signing the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty is being attacked for supposedly developing Nuclear Weapons (not breaking the treaty as they didn't sign) whilst the UK which did sign is planning to purchase more new ...

Greeks bomb Scotland Yard?

Gravatar If you imagine a situation in which the Greek army acting as peacekeepers in the UK allied with the scottish dominationed national government of the UK blew up Scotland Yard you would part understand how risky the attack on the Basra police station is. I don't like second guessing military tactics as you need to know what the situation is on the ground in detail. However, it appears that the UK

Grumpus

Gravatar I had this misfortune to catch Princess Nikki on Channel Four last week. Essentially, the premise of the show is that a girl called Nikki, who has a series of quite pronounced personality disorders, acts like a spoiled, brainless prima donna, shows enormous discourtesy to everyone she meets, and screams. In the one I caught, she was in fits of righteous indignation at having to work on a farm for the day. Within moments of being asked to muck out a pigsty she was howling “I hate it! I hate it! I just want to go home!” That this wretched, ...

Menzies Campbell's new year message: "I'm listening"

Gravatar Happy New Year to each and every one of you. For me, 2006 has been a year unlike any other. Becoming leader of a political party is both a privilege and a great responsibility. I am determined to make the very best of our Party’s opportunities and I believe that we have made a good start. I want to take [...]

Boxing Day Football - Love it !

Gravatar I'm really excited today because I am going to the football this afternoon and, in my humble opinion, there is nothing better on a Boxing Day than going to a football match. To be honest, I don't particularly care if it is a good game or not, so long as Norwich win, and just so long as the imbecile linesman from the Wolves game isn't officiating at this one. The best thing though about the whole Boxing Day football is the great atmosphere. People turn up in Father Christmas hats in Norwich City colours, people you see every ...

Getting into the Christmas Spirit

Gravatar Yes, I know. The Christmas period can be very difficult. There are no newspapers, the television is appallingly bad (with the sole exception of Dr. Who of course), you are surrounded by bored children who have already got fed up with their gifts and you suffer anxiety pains right through Christmas dinner as you contemplate how you are going to work off all these extra calories in the New Year. What better way to combat those festive blues than a nice dip in the sea? Surely things have not got that bad!

That Post-Christmas, Post-Who Satisfied Feeling

Gravatar A happy Christmas Day saw a fabulous dinner with Richard’s parents, a visit to mine, and of course lots of Doctor Who. Not just The Runaway Bride – enormous fun, if without quite the edge of last year’s, with a splendid spider (shame it didn’t move about more) and the most thrillingly hilarious chase of the year – but a special on the music, and a free concert looping round on the red button. Should you have missed it, it’s back tomorrow. Meanwhile, the Today Programme reports that Labour loses a member every twenty minutes. Coo. Is it Paul Marsden? ...

David Willett's High Tory List

Out by the Thames

Gravatar Aaaargh, set the alarm for 04:05 this morning so it's back to work. But it's been a "good" Christmas - good turkey, good conversation and thoughtful presents. (For regular readers of this blog, I didn't get anything by Katie Melua but I got two copies of the Best of ELO CD !) As for the TV, we only watched "Some Like It Hot" and Doctor Who. I thought the latter was probably better overall than
