Day 2184: TORCHWOOD: Combat

Gravatar Sunday: It’s Christmas Eve so Daddy is waiting up for Father Christmas to deliver me PRESENTS. I’ve gone to bed early, but I’ve asked him to stay up and make sure that Santa gets the sherry and sticky bun that I have left out for him. I hope that he knows I have been a GOOD elephant! I wonder what Daddy will do while waiting up for Father Christmas? [wibble wobble wibble wobble… later that same evening…] The first rule of Weevil Club is you do not talk about Weevil Club. Well, like the film “Fight Club” ...

Tonight, Thank God It's Them Instead Of You

Gravatar A sober Christmas message via This is Zimbabwe: Every day I ask myself ,what am I - a child of Africa and a Zimbabwean of many generations - doing here in England ? Every day I am reminded that I don’t really belong in this alien culture. What am I doing here, away from the sun-drenched plains of Africa in this dank, dark and cold climate ? What am I doing among the cold and indifferent and (

And a Riso in a pear tree

Gravatar Helping one of my flatmates to move in yesterday afternoon has left my muscles aching today. It was all the usual stuff: boxes, shelves, lamps, furniture - and a Risograph. This monstrous device was extremely heavy - I’m prepared to believe it literally weighed a ton. It took three of us stopping and starting to [...]

All change at Charlton... again

Gravatar Now that my little niece has gone to bed, we can finally switch off the nonstop CBeebies. Which I had been looking forward to, until I realised how little (i.e. zilch) of interest there is on TV. Even had a quick look at the guide for the next few days and there is nothing. Zip. Nada. So been back to browse the internet and see if anything has happened in the world... Well, Happy Christmas to Les Reed, but he's out of a job now. When he was given a lengthy contract at Charlton after Dowie left it did ...

We've Cancelled Christmas

Gravatar Yes, I and my fellow Luton Councillors are so concerned that Christmas, with its pagan symbolism and its stated objective of ramming Christian theology down people's throats, will offend people of other religions or no religion at all have decided to stop the whole thing. So anyone attempting to celebrate Christmas tomorrow be warned, council officers will confiscate your mince

To follow and to seek

Gravatar The world seems to be going through a bad time with Iran developing nuclear capability, North Korea testing it and violence erupting in Africa, although the latter somehow escapes the British media. They don’t seem interested in what goes on in Africa, perhaps they see it as a backward continent plagued by poverty, AIDS and ‘ethnic conflict’. They should look more closely and, among other things,

10 things I will never do...

Gravatar Paul Linford tagged me ages ago with this... Bit of a hard one since never say never... but... in no particular order: 1. Conform 2. Vote BNP 3. Mark Oaten, 'acts of unspeakable degradation'... Do I need to say any more? 4. Buy a Mills & Boon novel (do those things still exist?) 5. Eat octopus (or pulpo in Spanish)... or eel... 6. Grow a beard 7. Read "That Extra Half an Inch: Hair, Heels and

Santa's visit

Gravatar Father Christmas was outside my house yesterday evening! It was his annual parade in Garston under the bridge. He travels in style on the back of a vehicle..while volunteers from ARCH hand out sweets and fruit. Its a lovely tradition and I saw lots of excited children. I even got a gift myself (well I have been sort of good t his year!)

I'm dreaming of a Lillywhite Christmas

Gravatar Everything sorted for Christmas, just final couple of presents to wrap. A bit of closure - or at least a resting point - on a fair bit of council work too: The report of my CCTV scrutiny panel is done and now with the other panel members over Christmas for their comments; a lot of ongoing casework has been tied up (although still waiting for progress on some, including some council tax issues and the problem of HGVs breaking parking restrictions in Twyford Avenue to name but two); work on scrutinising the budget can take a bit of a break ...

Getting back out there

Gravatar Having finished all my Christmas shopping, wrapped my presents and put up my decorations I was feeling rather virtuous yesterday so I decided to go and deliver a few leaflets. Just as I was finishing off I encountered what seemed like a friendly but rather excitable dog. It followed me into every one of the six houses on the Terrace it lived in, whilst at the same time one of its owner's neighbours tried to bring it to heel. Having finished I turned to walk down the hill towards the next street when the little bugger lunged at the ...

Annoying things about Christmas - Number 6

Gravatar And the final thing on my list of things that annoy me about Christmas is ... ITV I'm sure those of a certain age can remember the jingle each Christmas "Christmas means ITV". But for the last 10 years or so, ITV have completely given up on Christmas. Why ? Because there is not the advertising revenue there to justify the BIG programmes and expense. Instead they serve up a pile of "celebrity" drivel, as hhighlighted by Iain Dale HERE. So, thank goodness for the public service that is the BBC. They don't have to worry about advertising ...

ID cards on a slippery slope

Gravatar This story in the Sunday Telegraph indicates to me that the Government are starting to backslide on their commitment to ID cards as they begin to realise the huge problems that need to be overcome to make the scheme work as envisaged. Not the least of their problems lies in the cost of the scheme and the amount that members of the public will be asked to pay to own one of these cards. The system of fines that are being set up to enforce this 'voluntary' scheme has 'own goal' written all over it. The paper reports that ...

300'th Posting & Merry Christmas

Gravatar This is my 300th posting, and so I'd like to thank the 40 or so daily regular readers of my blog for indulging my ranting over the last four months. I'm also pleased to offer season's greetings and a very merry Christmas to everyone else who has looked at my blog. According to my statistics, I am now averaging about 150 unique visitors a day, which in just four months is fabulous. So thank you, one and all. If anybody has issues with my blog, or any suggestions I'd be happy to know, so don't hesitate to leave ...

Gay rights and Christianity: equal before the law?

Gravatar Helen and Joe Roberts, Christians from Lancashire, have been awarded £10,000 in an out-of-court settlement after taking legal action against Wyre Borough Council. The Roberts family found out that the council was using taxpayers’ money to “promote homosexuality”, by printing information leaflets about gay rights. They asked a council officer to put out Christian literature alongside these leaflets – and not only did he refuse, he made a formal complaint of homophobia to the police. Shocked at being investigated for a hate crime, the couple took legal action, and now, a year later, the council and police have apologised and ...

Lembit revisited

Gravatar I can exclusively reveal that Liberal Democrat Party bosses were a bit nervous about what today's batch of Sunday newspapers might contain on the Lembit Őpik/Cheeky Girl saga. It is not that they were afraid that some new salacious details may emerge, as far as we are aware there are none, just that newspaper editors and their staff may find a different angle to keep a non-story alive, a further distraction from the party's key messages. As it happens they need not have worried. A quick scan of the Sunday papers' websites reveals that the fuss is dying down ...

Tales for Christmas

Gravatar It seems the good Doctor can triumph over even the hardest Murdochian hearts, as the Sunday Times give us Paul Cornell’s ‘Deep and Dreamless Sleep’. And if that’s far too uncynical for your tastes, try HL Mencken’s ‘A Bum’s Christmas’ (via Jamie).

Blair's Iraq Figleaf non-existant

Gravatar With the Weapons of Mass Destruction having been found to be non-existant some time ago Tony Blair has used the argument that it was good to introduce democracy and get rid of Saddam Hussain. The fact is, however, that it was not necessary to invade Iraq to achieve this. What people have now forgotten is that in the Kurdish north there was a no-fly zone which enabled the Kurds to operate

A Merry Christmas to You All

Gravatar Wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May you all find inner peace at Christmas and please remember those less fortunate than yourselves. Here's looking forward to a great New Year for Liberalism. God bless you all.

BDC blow it again

Gravatar On Tuesday Bridgnorth Town Council voted in favour of a Unitary Authority for Shropshire. However, on Wednesday more anarchy reigned as unprecedented events at BDC unfolded. Merry Christmas everyone!

Gravatar You might think I am a bit early, but not in the Ross family household. We are celebrating Christmas today returning to an old family tradition. When I was growing up we had the family Christmas (ie Mum, Dad, Peter and myself) on Christmas Eve and then went to one of my Nan's on Christmas Day and then the other on Boxing Day.
