It won't get any better than this

Gravatar Three weeks ago, I wrote: Mr Blair is formidably impressive, and without doubt the most articulate, clear-sighted and instinctual politician of his generation. Today's speech proved that: it was utterly masterful, truly mesmerising. It's what Mr Blair does best. Which is why he should go now - he can achieve no more in that time which is left to him. Better to leave when the encomia are still

Shame on you, unknown Labour MP!

Gravatar I've just watched a Newsnight report in which a journalist tried to hand out wristbands to Labour conference delegates based on who they would be backing in the forthcoming race for the leadership. Now, I know it's a little bit tongue-in-cheek and I fully understand those who did not wish to pin their colours to the mast. One MP (unfortunately I didn't catch who it was), however, positively lambasted the BBC for using licence-payers' money to "play little games". I was equally incensed by his disgraceful behaviour. Admittedly, media speculation can go too far ...

Claire Ward MP fails "honesty booth" test

Gravatar Although I am still coming to terms with my new computer, it would be wrong not to mention the performance of Watford's Labour MP Claire Ward on the 'honesty booth' feature on Radio 5 Live's Morning Phone-in today. The basic idea is for an MP to answer various questions after which listeners text in to say whether they think the MP is being honest. Onlu 11 per cent of listeners reckoned her answers honest. Lembit on the same feature last week scored circa 70 per cent. Perhaps more damning and accurate was the following listener comment: “It’s clear ...

Blair Moves Towards the Exit

Gravatar Tony Blair used his final conference to tell a story about his two sons being lambasted by a voter who later claimed he didn’t mean what he said when he realised the youths were Blair’s offspring. Hung Parliament Quandary

Gravatar The spectre of a hung parliament being the outcome of the next general election is looming in the air again. Liberal Democrats traditionally tend to get a bit uneasy about this, or at least tend to get portrayed as uneasy about it. I agree with the opinion taken by Process Guy, commenting on an intriguing article by Matthew Paris in The Times, that this presents us with an opportunity, more than

Education, Education, Education

Gravatar I am increasingly concerned about the flabbiness of political thinking on both sides of the political spectrum about education. The current status quo is aptly summed up by George Walden: 'For all their protestations to the contrary, neither right nor left really believe in meritocracy. At heart the left retains a gut opposition to selection in any form, while the right is in favour of

Gravatar It has been nearly 20 years since I sat in a comprehensive school as a student... writes Sarah Teather on the Guardian's mortarboard blog today. That is true. But as an earlier profile, also from the Guardian, makes clear, it is slightly less long since she sat in the independent Leicester Grammar School as a student. If Brown was PM and Blair wanted the job...

Gravatar So – today was Tony’s big farewell day. How did he do as regards his speech? Put it like this – if Brown was Prime Minister and Blair the heir apparent, I think after their pair of speeches, Labour members would be begging for Brown to step aside. The Liberal City

Gravatar The more astute amongst you might have noticed that a rather unusual event is taking place this week. I'm talking about an Autumn political conference in an inland city. Yours Truly was unable to lose his conference virginity in Brighton this year, but I am aware that Seaside Towns are the usual venue of choice. The Peterloo Massacre is pointed to; Marx and Engels' studies of such utter urban deprivation. But is Labour really returning ...

Blair's Speech

The Catholic Church: Never dull!

Gravatar A Zambian Archbishop has been excommunicated after ordaining four married men as bishops. He was also married himself in a ceremony organised by the Moonies. I have to say I'm not surprised that he's been excommunicated, nor do I really blame the Vatican for doing so. Regardless of what people think about married clergy, it's a sensitive issue requiring discussion. Publicity-seeking stunts such as this will inevitably be met with uncompromising action by the Church authorities.

Gravatar There are so many reasons why Labour are not fit to govern the country. Let's not forget that for every expensive disaster, whether it be ID cards, illegal wars or money wasted on an inefficient tax credit system which causes so much pain for so many people - one Gordon Brown signed the cheques. There are many valid reasons why he should not be PM, but the one which seems to be making the most headlines is because he's a Scot. What utter nonsense. Gravatar I thought that one of the best bits of commentary coming out of the Lib Dem conference last week was this article by Matthew Parris in the Times. I Want It All And I Want It When The Convergence Criteria Are Met...

Gravatar The slogan of this Labour conference is obvious; "Working With People's Aspirations" (Hilary Armstrong just invoked it once again). As a slogan it's fair enough, sounds nice, very democratic. But as ever in the New Labour experiment, it depends upon a semantic leap of faith that is thoroughly unjustified. What they actually mean, of course, is "Working With What We Think People's Aspirations Should Be".
