Keeping Up Traditions

It’s good to see that The Guardian is keeping up the traditions of today with an excellent article telling us that Chris Martin of Coldplay is now supporting the Tories because of a love-in with Dave C. While this is curiously absent from their online edition, Silicon.com can only publish on the net and have [...]

Well I'll be turned into a frog...

My nomination papers should be signed and submitted shortly, so I ought to declare my candidacy now in the Liberal Democrat interest for Village ward in the London Borough of Southwark. Village ward is one of the nicer parts of London, comprising of the heart of Dulwich Village. At the moment, it is a split ward, one Labour, two Conservative but we did quite well there in the General Election so

I'm Officially Very Excited

(Sound of TARDIS materialising) Think you’ve seen it all? Think again. Outside those doors, we might see anything. We could find new worlds – Terrifying monsters – Impossible things. And if you come with me… Nothing'll ever be the same again. “Come on. Let’s go!” Doctor Who Coming soon to BBC1. It looks great, too. Richard: “Is that the first time in history that a trailer has had a sequel?” Thirteen days, twenty-three hours, thirty-five minutes to go. Not that I'm counting...

Champions -at a canter and in some style

Back from the Reading game. Reading are promoted as champions and they did it in some style after battling away for 60 minutes in a fairly even contest the flood gates opened. Reading took Derby apart and absolutely battered them for the final 30 minutes running out 5-0 winners. The fans celebrated in style as the mexican waves circled the stadium with even the Derby fans joining in. The final

King's Park Triumph! Roads and Council Tax ...

Extremely early start delivering "Good Morning" leaflets in Glasgow on Thursday at King's Park by-election. It was well worth it - our candidate Margot Clark took the seat from Labour by 100 votes, taking the LibDems from fourth to first place. A truly tremendous result and a sign of the times without a doubt. You can see the result by clicking the heading above. Friday included speaking

April ...

OK - so they were all genuine. But Condoleezza Rice and Jasper Carrott?

April Fool

The eery thing about the Guardian's April Fool prank today is how plausible the whole scenario is. There is such a tight fit between the vacuity of Coldplay's music and the policy-lite agenda of Cameron's Conservatives that for a moment I thought they had goofed by pretending that the alliance between Chris Martin and the Tory leader was invented. The joy of the article however lies in some classic parody on the lifestyle and beliefs of the two men: "Coldplay's music shines with the kind of optimistic vision I want to bring to Britain as a whole," Mr Cameron ...

April Fool, or idea for the Government?

The scary thing about this is its almost believable... I just hope nobody in the Home Office sees it and thinks its a good idea... Another very believable April Fool is the iZilla, which would be rather cool for us music geeks :) Tags:privacy april_fools mobiles

Neal Ascherson in the LRB

There is a tremendous piece by Neal Ascherson in the current London Review of Books. It is a review of The Conquest of Nature: Water, Landscape and the Making of Modern Germany by David Blackbourn. But it is far more than that too. It takes in a discussion of what "conservation" can mean in a world where the landscape has been shaped and reshaped by human activity. And it also looks at the nature of Nazism, with its strange combination of forward-looking and backward-looking elements. I have posted a short extract from this article on my anthology blog Serendib, but ...

Not an April Fool - Tim Worstall explains Land Value Tax...

...and supports it, in Tim Worstall: Selling the Spectrum: Along with David Curry, and recently also a publication from the Institute of Economic Affairs - "Wheels of Fortune" by Fred Harrison - conservatives are beginning to wake up to the potential benefits of Land Value Tax. An idea whose time is coming at last? We can hope!

Kicking against the pricks.

Avain flu vaccine safe but not very effective according to Avian flu, what we need to know. Probably not the same juice, but the UK has ordered two million doses of experimental flu vaccine for front line workers. For the usually reliable BBC, it is a pretty loosely written piece, containing lines such as: "We should not get alarmed about bird flu. After all, this virus causes disease almost

Some Chessington stories ....

1. Not long ago the local fire brigade was called to Chessington to rescue a cat stuck high up a tree. The ladder was duly lifted and scaled but the firefighter couldn't get close enough to reach the animal. A rescue vehicle with a long ladder was brought all the way over from Croydon. The ladder was erected, the firefighter climbed up, only to find that the cat was, in fact, a perfectly...

Elections tomorrow - Uncertainty continues

The general election in Thailand is tomorrow and it looks as if this may leave the country no nearer to resolving the political crisis. The Prime Minister seems determined to stay on providing he believes that he has a mandate. The election or at least parts of it may be declared unconstitutional. This means that the lower house may not be able to sit as not all 500 seats will be filled. As I
