Apologies in advance to any South Americans

I've never been a big fan of telling jokes about the mental abilities of President Bush - I don't think it helps the situation- but I did like this one from Rambling with Roger : Don Rumsfeld is giving George W Bush his daily briefing and tells him that three Brazilian soldiers have been killed in Iraq. George says "that's absolutely terrible", is lost for words, and holds his head in his hands

London's best residents' association

Off to the residents' association for Tivoli, Montenotte and Glasslyn Roads. I turn up for the AGM itself so I can hear the discussion before my allotted speech and so get a better idea of their concerns. I arrive at 11am and am offered wine - this is good news - but I decline until after the meeting. I like a glass of wine - but they have asked me to speak for 40 minutes and take 20 minutes of

Latest leads on Waltergate

The First Post usefully reprints the full transcript of Tony Blair's Today interview where he apologised for the expulsion of Walter Wolfgang:Look, I wasn't in the conference centre at the time.Meanwhile Oliver Kamm, loyal New Labourite that he is, does his best to blacken the character of the nation's favourite pensioner. To be fair, he finds plenty of ammunition:Taking Wolfgang's conference article as their justification, the CND leadership tried to wrest control of Labour CND from the Trotskyites in late 1983 and 1984. They were largely unsuccessful - the IMG being good at packing meetings and organising slates for elections ...

Blair and Brown squabbling over leadership

The most memorable moment from Labour’s Party Conference will be the ‘PR disaster’ when the 82 year old delegate Walter Wolfgang was forced out the conference hall for heckling the Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw. The Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany had the temerity to say ‘nonsense’ when Jack was defending the Iraq War. Laughably they had to use bouncers to throw him and another guy who complained and then Walter was threatened wit prosecution under the Prevention of Terrorism Act when he attempted to go back in.Is this the new Britain we are going to be faced under the so-called ...

My main portal site has been recoded, whilst users shouldn't notice much difference from before, where possible I've replaced tables with divs and also tried to ensure that it's HTML valid.

David the gypsy

One Tory who cannot recognise when it is that he is drowning is the MP and AM for Monmouthshire, David Davies.David is renowned for his hatred of political correctness, effectively walking out of the Assembly's Equal Opportunity Committee after a row over the way that he questioned the gay rights organisation, Stonewall Cymru. Indeed, I believe that his party leader removed him so as to avoid further controversy, something that David courts assiduously. It is arguable that whilst he was on the Equal Opportunity Committee there was a sort of symbiotic relationship between David and the other members. His attempts to ...

Many ways to skin a cat

I've just been banned by 'The Poosh' an English blogger. I suggest his pic with a Republican woman with a T-shirt which says 'I just neutered the cat. Now he's a Liberal' could have 'I just butchered the cat. Now he's liberated'. Looks like our neo-con friend doesn't have a sense of humour. He thinks I'm being offensive to those US and UK soldiers in Iraq. Well I think they are brave but they are following Bush and Blair's orders. Funny how the neo-cons don't find a war where apparently 100,000 or so Iraqi men, women and children have died ...

When is a bung (not) a bung?

Is it acceptable for the central party to bribe local parties in target seats to select particular candidates? That is to say, should the party be in the business of slipping "large sums" to certain campaigns based solely on the gender of the candidate? It appears that it is acceptable, and that this practice will grow in the future, limited only by available

Buddhists and Murder

Not really two things that should go together. However, given the sad world that we live in I started out the day in Acocks Green. Sadly one of my constituents was murdered on Thursday night. I started the day talking to local residents about this and liaising with the police about the matter. My original plan had been to start with a visit to the Buddhists, but I felt it was important that I

Who will save this drowning party?

The analogy is so obvious that it seems a shame to even make it, but what the hell. The BBC report that a Conservative MP has turned lifesaver when he dragged a drowning man to safety. Michael Fabricant, MP for Lichfield, helped 18-year-old student Jack Shelley rescue a man, known only as Ian, from Minster Pool in Lichfield's centre. Meanwhile, in Blackpool five men are vying for the right to try and pull the Conservative Party out of the sea, where it is slowly drowning. Has anybody warned them about the undercurrents? This is one rescue that may ...
