So much for the land of Edison, Feynman, Asimov , Watson and Hubble

Political Wire reports that a Pew Research Center Poll finds that 64 percent of Americans favour teaching creationism along with evolution in the public schools. 38 percent want schools to teach creationism instead of evolution. On a more detailed question the response was: "Life On Earth has ......existed in its present form since the beginning of time ....... 42 per cent ......evolved over

Lost in the English Channel

As valid as the argument is, why do I get the impression that this story could have been published by the Western Mail at any time in the last three months? Is this a sustained campaign for more powers for the Welsh Assembly or is it a means of filling up space during a slack period?Still, Alderney must be a nice place to be at this time of year.

Back from Suffolk

After a couple of days in Southwold I realised where I had seen its lighthouse and sinister water tower before. Peter Greenaway's Drowning by Numbers was filmed there. I also recommend the lost town of Dunwich and Snape Maltings. Aldeburgh itself grew on me, but is probably not at its best over a bank holiday weekend. Let's hear it for Benjamin Britten anyway.

Government refuse funds for Birmingham Library

I link through to the press release from DCMS which made it clear that the government will not give Birmingham funds under PFI for a new Library. If I remember rightly the bid put forward did not specify where the Library would be or whether or not it would have the archives united in a National Centre for Family History (or split apart as they are at the moment). For all of Labour's crocodile

We took advantage of the opportunity to spend some time with family over the weekend and for Sarah - as you can see from the picture above - that meant some time playing with our nephew and godson Charlie!!

Astronomy Picture of the Day

The url for this site was posted on the OU noticeboard for my course. Yesterday's pic was a beautiful satellite photo of Hurricane Katrina. There is a fresh pic every day with an explanation by an astronomer here: Nasa A couple of friends of ours, D and J, are staying in Florida because they thought it would be a quiet place for D to finish writing his book without distractions! They did the same thing last year and had to be evacuated from the path of a hurricane. So far as we can tell, Katrina missed them but the ...

Child's Play. Normality Resuming

Yesterday evening I was out delivering in the Adambrae area of Livingston. This is the area of town that poor Rory Blackhall, the murdered schoolchild, lived in. For the first time in the week we have been doing our deliveries I actually saw groups of children playing again in the street. This has been an activity that has not been forming is normal backdrop to the this by election campaign so

Up, up and away

Outrageous! Two European governments have dared to interfere in the free market, not only by banning certain airlines from their territory on safety grounds, but also by publishing their blacklists. This is the nanny state gone mad. As a consumer, I demand the right to fly on North Korea's Air Koryo and on that sterling Ghanaian outfit, Johnsons Air Ltd. Furthermore, I demand the right not to
