"Political Hack" on wrong tail of cat (I am not Blofeld)

"PoliticalHack" a Labour Party activist who secreted a camera in our underground centre of world domination in Sheldon believes: Is John Hemming really some kind of Blofeld character? Is the plan for a Birmingham underground system just a cunning distraction from his real plans? An undercover camera took this picture in Yardley yesterday at the Coventry Road office... To confirm that two of the

A Sunday stroll

I had been invited by various members of the Mosque to come and join the celebrations for the birthday of the Prophet. I arrived at the Mosque and was greeted with a cheery cry of "Hello James!"- I looked around expecting to see one of the people who had invited me, but it was not- it was just one of the crowd. I quickly realised that I was among friends. I chatted with several people who have asked to join the Liberal Democrats while the procession formed up to march through the town centre. After a brief recitation from the ...

Lard as an election issue

Amount of low-fat cottage cheese in our village shops: none. Amount of lard: 4kg. Nutritional information on lard packet: '100% fat' (in case you thought it was a high fibre health food) ‘Made in the UK using Danish, Dutch or German lards.’ The death of the British lard industry has been much-neglected in this election campaign, maybe they've sold it to Iran, like Rover. But there are still 96 hours to go.

More on Brian Sedgemore

Adrian Slade (the man who auditioned Peter Cook for the Cambridge Footlights) has a letter in Friday's Liberal Democrat News: Not many people know it, and as a Labour MP he was reluctant to admit it, but Brian Sedgemore was a signed up member of the Liberal Party for two years between 1965 and 1967. So welcome back, Brian! I wonder if he remembers how he helped me when I was candidate for Putney in the 1966 general election. We both felt much the same about the conservatism of Harold Wilson's Labour Party in those days and we campaigned ...

Goldfish sent polling card

At every general election there is a spate of stories along the lines of "CHILD OF 2 IS SENT POLLING CARD". These are reported in a lighthearted way, with an undercurrent that they are a sign of how inefficient the local council is at running the electoral process. Bollocks. The only possible reason for a child of 2 being sent a polling card is that his parents have filled in the registration form wrongly. And the only reason for the news reaching the national media is that the parents have tipped off their local newspaper or radio station and the ...

Ignore the lies - vote your conscience

Six hours meeting voters in Wycombe yesterday, and one thing is clear: the people of Wycombe have not forgotten about Iraq as Blair would wish them to. I spoke to Asian Tory activists who wished Howard had not endorsed the war on Thursday night. One of them put his fist to his chest and said 'in here I support you'. I spoke to Labour activists who detest Blair mightily and secretly hope for a small enough win to trigger a leadership challenge. Last night I got angry as I watched both Gordon Brown and John Reid propounding the lie ...

Blown away ...

... Not literally of course! I was astounded by the reception we received again in Loughborough Town Centre. The impression I'm getting, is that all those who voted tactically in Loughborough last time (e.g. for Labour or the Tories), are likely to support us this time, which is brilliant. I'm not sure how well we're going to do, but it's certainly going to be an improvement. I received all

Polls underline Labour uncertainty

Halfway through the last weekend of the General Election and the latest batch of polls show Labour's lead being eroded. It is not however, an increase in support for the Tories, which is eating into support for Tony Blair, it is the steady rise of the Liberal Democrats. That does not mean that I have changed my mind about the nonsense that voting for the Liberal Democrats will put the Tories in, it clearly will not. What it will do is to give us a lot more Liberal Democrats MPs, produce a much reduced Labour majority and see the Tories ...

Making Forecasts

The day has dawned rather cloudy- despite the forecast of sunshine and high temperatures. However I hope that things will clear up by the time we wander over to the Carnival later on. Today is May Day. Originally this was the Celtic Beltane festival but has been adopted in support of various causes over the centuries. However with every sign of late spring, leaves on the trees, ladybirds and swallows on the wing, today feels almost like the gateway to summer. In the election forecasts, the Conservatives are clearly poised for defeat- the only question is how big this defeat ...
