These are the people in my neighbourhood

This concept is just fantastic. The idea is that you take photos of the people in your neighborhood holding signs that have the lyrics to the "Sesame Street" song on them and then post the photos to this neighbourhood project website. Very American I know but, hey, if it gets you out into the community talking to your neighbours then it must be a good thing. Found care of Margaret Mason.

Targets and Street Sweepers

I encountered our new Street Sweeping machine on the Coventry Road in Sheldon today. It had a flat tyre and had been sitting there for about 2 hours. This shows the problems with managing things through targets and statistics. We don't have a statistic which measures how long it takes the depot to come out and sort out a flat tyre. Common Sense dictates that the depot should move

Calm down, calm down

Did you read Andrew Rawnsley's column in today's Observer? I can well imagine how it would have made thousands of Liberal Democrats ecstatic over their corn flakes. We should avoid getting carried away. I agree with Rawnsley (and with Peter Black) that, in the forthcoming general election, turnout will be the joker in the pack. A two horse race?

Liberal Democrat literature often identifies us as the main challengers in an election and then, using the 'two-horse race' argument, seeks to build the credibility of our candidate(s). I have done it myself, though I have never adopted this tactic when we have not been the main challengers. This has been borne out by the results. The forthcoming General Election therefore will be unique. This is because, whatever is said in individual constituencies, the Liberal Democrats nationally will be arguing strongly and with good reason, that the contest for number 10 Downing Street is a three-horse race. That this ...

Back to the Brothel

From the NY Times Daily News Headlines email I received today: "A year after Nicholas D. Kristof freed Srey Mom from sex slavery in Cambodia, stigma and low self-esteem forced her back into prostitution. This column includes an interactive feature." An interactive feature... Really? Sounds saucy.
